prank gone wrong

I think that in this day and age, supposed grown adults should be over doing childish pranks that even 12 year olds would find less than amusing.

If that is what those two dj’s and the radio station they work for, consider to be entertainment … then I believe they have well and truly given up any claim to a place in the industry.

How childish and banal and pathetic of them to think that targetting a busy hospital in that way was somehow going to be worthy of note.

As a consequence, someone has chosen to take their life, and leave their now shattered family behind.

To the two dj’s responsible, and their producers who also no doubt, gave them the go ahead to do it …… they should have been immediately sacked.

The radio station itself has shown no leadership in regard to the incident, instead shielding them from public scrutiny by saying they are receiving “counselling”. What a load of utter effin bullshit.

For those two who think nothing of playing pranks on others, what occurred subsequently, should just be water of a ducks back.

No need for counselling, either put them out front of the media to face their comeuppance in public, or sack them immediately and send them back to obscurity where they well and truly belong.

As for the station itself who condoned the prank ….. just take their licence away …. in this day and age, listeners deserve much better.

GPJ, think this is a bit OTT.

If you are taking away radio licences for airing the sort of banality that is the prank call, there won’t be too many stations left broadcasting.

The two DJs are doing what many before them have done, if you haul them out in front of the media, lets also roll out Doug Mulray and his ilk who can explain why this stuff is amusing.

Everyone is looking for someone to blame, perhaps there is someone, perhaps not and like with most things there is some grey between the black and white. Thought Mike Carlton got it reasonably right in today’s SMH.

You’re citing Doug Mulray as a witness for the defence Malvern?

How long did he last on National TV …. was it 13 minutes before Kerry Packer pulled his show off the air ….. (Australia’s Naughtiest Home Video’s)

Packer, unlike the spineless people at that radio station, knew when to act.

It runs a lot deeper than 2 ‘dickheads’ turning up and chewing the fat for a few hours.

Ok…..many dickheads.

I’m one who has never enjoyed the crank call….I just think it is possibly the lowest form of humour, and is just cringe-worthy at best.

I don’t blame the DJs….the law of unintended consequences….and this is certainly tragic.

I do think it will hopefully put an end to some of this stuff, which as GPJ suggested, just isn’t worthy of airtime in a reasonably “civilised” society.

In my opinion.

Shot more than 36 points in an OOM day….seriously.

As I posted earlier, in the UK it is considered a criminal act to impersonate someone and ask for information. If nothing else their legal team should be sacked for not knowing this or at least checking further.

I will break 90 this year.

Their legal probably did know this and as such gave their go ahead tolmij.
The call was placed in Australia, so it was not subject to UK laws.
I’m not sure if we have similar laws here though.

There is precedent for individuals to be extradited to another country where that countries laws have been broken. USA have done this on many occaisions, particularly with laws regarding data theft on computers. The rage over this is sure to get a similar response.

My point was that this was a very funny phone prank between a son and his father.

One man’s funny is another’s poison.

I reckon most found it mildly amusing before the nurse spoiled the party.

Keeping in mind I failed Legal Studies in high school, but isn’t extradition only an option if the crime was committed in said country and then the suspect flees overseas?

You could be correct but from the screams from the whiter than white UK press I would not be surprised at anything with this one. The English police have already become involved and want them interviewed. I still think they were stupid but they are being used as a scapegoat by their own incompetent legal department.

I listen to the radio while driving, for background music. I can’t stand those talk-back whingers.

It pisses me off when the ‘entertainment hosts’ delve into prank call rubbish.

A few of Matt Tilley’s calls were funny, but most of it is simply crap, comparable to the dumb shit that Hamish & Andy spruik.

I realise they’re trying to appeal to ignorant teenagers, not adults, but I wish they’d just play music.

I wish everyone would lighten up already in this day and age.

If this nurse didn’t kill herself, the “prank” phone call wouldn’t even be news anymore for all of us, and you’re only kidding yourself if you believe you’d feel just as strongly about it if it had gone down that way.

To sit back and claim this one call is responsible for the nurse’s suicide is delusional at best. I think a lot of you need to take the blinkers off and put the pitch forks down and start looking at things with a bit of perspective.

So many comments as well about how this type of humour is pathetic and these FM radio DJ’s are only appealing to the lowest common denominator. That’s fine if you think that, but don’t go around pushing your opinions down everyone elses throat. If you don’t like it. Change the station. Simple.

Regarding specifics of the situation. Nothing malicious was done in the call. No information was given out by the nurse that wasn’t already public knowledge and the nurse that’s killed herself only transferred a call through anyway. To kill yourself based on those circumstances alone does not add up.

A more likely scenario is the nurse that spilled the info or other nursing staff gave Jacinta Saldanha a hard time about transferring the call through. She’s a foreigner working abroad in a country that has a serious “class” discrimination issue. The ridicule she likely received from co-workers would be a much more likely trigger for her to contemplate suicide. (this is just speculation of course. The difference is, i’m not pointing my finger at anyone, i’m just saying that is a more likely scenario in my eyes)

Sure, you can sit here and say, she wouldn’t of been ridiculed if the call had never taken place. Maybe that’s true, or maybe she would of never been ridiculed, if she’d never taken the job at the hospital and stayed at home with the kids instead.

My point is, nothing at all points to the DJ’s being directly responsible for this pointless suicide by Ms Saldanha. For me, that is obvious and it concerns me that a lot of other people are so quick to throw someone in the fire without first having a full and complete understanding of what happened.

To all the people that are banging on about these people should hung out and sacked etc etc…......

Ever told a racist joke??
Ever told a joke about fat people??
Ever told a sexist joke about blondes??
Ever told a joke about how stupid Irish people are, or that kiwis root sheep??

It’s basically the same thing!!
So next time you wana tell a joke about that silly blonde at the bar, or poor old Patty the Irishman, think about what your about to say. Cause someone might hear you say it, and kill themselves cause of your irresponsible attempt at trying to be funny!!

The only thing that these pair did wrong (more the producers if you ask me) is ring a hospital to enquire about a sick person. That is crossing the line a bit IMO. For all they knew, she could have been in there having a miscarriage.
Thankfully she wasn’t, but had it turned out that something was seriously wrong and the nurses actually told the radio station, and had they put that on the air…....... Well then I think there would have been a case to answer, but they have nothing to answer for as it stands!!

grooveless, the only way to play golf……

now a ’groove-snob’, and never going back!! :)

This is a crock of shit. I feel for her family and now two innocent djs copping it big time and being hung out to dry by the station.

The prank, if you could even call it that, was nothing. The hospital should be looking inside rather than out.

She serious passed one call on to the nursing station who then blabbed confidential information, against policy, out to someone on the phone.

She has herself to blame, people all up in arms, but they weren’t before she suicided.

There’s many a slip ’tween a cup and a lip.

http://www.golflink.com.au/...

Bernie larkham

the dj’s are not exactly innocent parties in this, while i dont think they should take total 100% blame for the prank, as they wasnt exactly the most experience Dj’s about the country and they would have had to have permission from the producer of the show or someone above the dj’s authority

The dj’s have basicly just did there job and was told to to put it to air.

now this is where the djs could have said No before it going to air but however they agreed along with who ever else gave permission

the djs need to take responsibility for their actions as well as others who allowed the prank to go to air.

looking how you are makingthese dj’s look innocent Bernie larkham, they could have went and committed murder becuase that what their bosses wanted them to do..

1 . djs need to take reasonsibility for their actions

2. Radio station needs to take responsibility for allowing the prank to go ahead in the first place

3. Hospital also needs to take some responsibility as well.

I dont think this 1 incident was the cause of this nurses death i think it was just tip of the iceberg that took her to her final destination in life…

in Life we all have to take responsibility for our own actions we take and not look at other people to blame.

I would agree, that we shouldnt be laying all blame on the dj’s i think thats is very unfair and the djs have been copping alot of the blame. i spose that is becuase they are at the bottom of the rung on the ladder so to speak.

I do not and i do not see how anyone can see that these dj’s are innocent

we all know the intention wasnt there to upset or hurt anyone , however someone did get hurt

The nurse being indian decent , becuase of the nature of the incident becuase royalty has been involved she may have thought she has brought Shame to the royal family, shame to her own country as well as the united kindom, shame to her family and friends, thought she could not face the world again…

i feel for the family of the deceased as well as everyone who is involved in this

IMO absolutely no one could have foreseen these tragic consequences resulting from the call. You run a red light and I think it’s fair to say “You could have killed someone”.

Not understanding the consequences … what’s usually called negligence ... is the common denominator for both. Sure it’s much more dangerous to run a red light and more likely that someone will get hurt. Plenty of kids who do burn outs on the road, or 120kmh in a 60kmh zone, don’t foresee any possible tragic consequences either, at least until someone gets hurt, or hopefully if they just lose their licence.

But if you undertake enough pranks, sooner or later something will happen too. Probably most ‘victims’ will brush a prank aside, a few will take the humiliation more seriously. It’s therefore a matter of degree.

I just don’t understand the mentality of pranks. They’re sort of ‘bullying light’. To turn around and say ‘it’s just a joke’ is the same language a bully uses, just the consequences of pranking are normally far less and less likely … except in this case.

To make a radio show out of continual pranking is just asking for trouble, based on the likelihood that eventually you’ll hit on someone who can’t take it. It’s poor, slack and easy radio, and a pathetic use of a medium that has so much to offer for a better world.

Also agree that her heritage had something to do with this.
ANY English nurse answering a call from the Queen would shit herslf, and dare not question her identity, which is protocol.
MAYBE a more experienced English nurse may have been game enough to question her dodgey accent, but it would have taken a brave soul. The poor woman was in an untenable position.

Making people squirm or get embarrassed isn’t my idea of entertainment; neither is pulling the wings of flies, so the whole prank call thing is lost on me. However, the function of commercial radio is to entertain not save the free world, so the fun continues.

For me an unforseen consequence is just that, unforseen, and no need to look for someone to blame.

This space for rent.

The more i think about it, the more i feel that the 2 djs are ultimately scapegoats for a radio station lacking in creativity, leadership and morality. Anyone would know that a broacast is nothing without a production team. If the TEAM were of any value then this skit would have been left on the production room floor, instead we have two youngsters with career in tatters and a deceased nurse…tragic circumstances. Ceo, whoever you are , step down, you have failed in your responsibilites

More tigerish than a wounded TIGER

this radio network has form – a few years back they put a 14 year old girl on a lie detector live on air and asked her questions of a sexual nature! I mean FFS 14 years old… unfortunately thats not where it ends, that skit bombed as the girl admitted she had been raped…

The year of the tiger

I remember that….was a lead balloon if ever ive seen one

the radio station has had a few incedents before that as well…. they have been lucky once to keep there broadcasting licence

Don’t you think the two DJ’s are doing it tough right now (granted
not as tough as the family of the nurse) but I cant see what other option the company could do other than offer them support or counseling?

Do you suggest they just wash their hands of them? Sack them immediately to try and save some face and limit the damage?

What gets me about views like this and even more extreme when people are calling for prison sentences and even worse is that if we went with that, then we would probably be dealing with more than just one suicide.

Rather than just sit back and continue to be the keyboard warrior that you always are on this site and continually throw out sweeping statements like “The radio station itself has shown no leadership in regard to the incident” What then would you do sir that would appease every single person who has an opinion or viewpoint on the situation???

Also the prank call wasn’t live. It was pre-recorded and ultimately the station (and their legal team) gave it the ok to go to air.

That’s the problem it’s not the stations or their legal teams decision to ok it to go to air, by law they must ask the person on the other end of the line while recording whether they can air the call.

Really poor choice to do those rubbish interviews on ACA/Today tonight. But I guess they had to show their crocodile tears somehow.

Hack,

For one thing, they shouldn’t have been allowed to do it in the first place … but then the stupid culture of radio stations these days leaves a lot to be desired.

Once they did it, and it was broadcast …… it was then the sponsors who led the way on the matter, and not the stations management.

They just went in damage control when they’re hands were being forced by the sponsor led backlash ……. rather than take any ownership or indeed leadership on this issue.

To my knowledge they are still squirming around rather than bite the bullet and get rid of the two dickheads responsible.

In regard to me being a “keyboard warrior” I’m sure you could apply that moniker to anyone who voices any opinion on any internet site ……. including for instance, your good self.

And as for “What then would you do sir that would appease every single person who has an opinion or viewpoint on the situation”?

Why do I have to appease everyone, or even anyone for that matter? .....

Since when is it my job to please everyone?

I certainly don’t recall sitting for that job interview, and come to think of it ……… I apparently am not getting paid for it either.

I am just voicing my opinion like the others including yourself have to date on this particular thread.

If you don’t like it, well I’m sorry, but it’s not my job to please you.

You do realise that these radio shows have producers that come up with most of the ideas and give the go ahead for content to go to air? And the producers then report into Head of Content for the station. It runs a lot deeper than 2 ‘dickheads’ turning up and chewing the fat for a few hours.

Obviously the 2 whatever you want to call them were not receiving knowledgeable information from their hierarchy because the nurses did not get asked if it could be aired at the end of the call, which is required.
