Without that phone call I believe she would still be alive today

if everyone killed themselves over a big mistake in the workplace geez we would have a lot more suicides..

I dont buy it, I think the full story will reveal itself in time

Golf is only a game…Yeah right who are you kidding?

This is a crock of shit. I feel for her family and now two innocent djs copping it big time and being hung out to dry by the station.

The prank, if you could even call it that, was nothing. The hospital should be looking inside rather than out.

She serious passed one call on to the nursing station who then blabbed confidential information, against policy, out to someone on the phone.

She has herself to blame, people all up in arms, but they weren’t before she suicided.

There’s many a slip ’tween a cup and a lip.

I think that in this day and age, supposed grown adults should be over doing childish pranks that even 12 year olds would find less than amusing.

If that is what those two dj’s and the radio station they work for, consider to be entertainment … then I believe they have well and truly given up any claim to a place in the industry.

How childish and banal and pathetic of them to think that targetting a busy hospital in that way was somehow going to be worthy of note.

As a consequence, someone has chosen to take their life, and leave their now shattered family behind.

To the two dj’s responsible, and their producers who also no doubt, gave them the go ahead to do it …... they should have been immediately sacked.

The radio station itself has shown no leadership in regard to the incident, instead shielding them from public scrutiny by saying they are receiving “counselling”. What a load of utter effin bullshit.

For those two who think nothing of playing pranks on others, what occurred subsequently, should just be water of a ducks back.

No need for counselling, either put them out front of the media to face their comeuppance in public, or sack them immediately and send them back to obscurity where they well and truly belong.

As for the station itself who condoned the prank ….. just take their licence away …. in this day and age, listeners deserve much better.

A fellow golfer Wayne Roberts (Waynee Poo) did some really funny pranks on 4BK radio for well over a decade. Whenever I had a chance I would tune into his radio show for a laugh. His pranks were the instigation of friends of the victim. I wonder what his thoughts are on this disaster?

Totally ignorant about almost everything except golf.

I am a Registered Nurse and worked in England for 3 years. Patient confidentiality is drummed into us very early in the training. This poor lady breached that trust to a member of the Royal family, and the world heard about it, obviously devastating for her.
Very sad.

This gets closest to the issue. It’s not just about a ‘prank’.

Mel Greig and Michael Christian sought to and succeeded in breaching the medical privacy of the Duchess of Cambridge by impersonating her relatives. To me that is not a ‘prank’ or a joke. Beyond actual health care, protection of patient confidentiality is the most important responsibility of health care professionals.

Jacintha Saldanha was working in a hospital where the responsibility and importance of protecting the royal family’s privacy was paramount. She made a professional error as a direct result of being mislead by the ‘prank’, and it’s not surprising to me that she took it seriously and personally.

I don’t think they ever sought to breach any medical privacy at all. I think they expected to be hung up on pretty quickly and get a cheap laugh. I was actually surprised at how easily the call was transferred given how bad the impersonation was. And surely given the high profile of the patient (or any patient really) the privacy procedures of the hospital are simply not good enough. But now none of this really matters and the story has a terribly tragic ending.

So you think impersonating the Queen and Prince Phillip, however badly, and seeking information about Kate, wasn’t a breach of medical privacy just because they didn’t expect to get through?

That’s like saying you went through a red light because you didn’t expect to hit someone.

They also had plenty of time to pull the pin after a few seconds of the conversation and hang up themselves if they had any morals.

That’s a huge stretch to compare a prank call (and yes, I understand it had tragic ramifications) to actually breaking the law. You are entitled to your opinion and I’m not going to argue the point.

What I do find amazing is that this has been front page news for 2 days in Melbourne, managing to overshadow a person driving at 150km on the wrong side of a freeway killing herself and 4 other innocent young lives. And where’s the public anger? Almost nonexistent.

Why is it “utter effin bullshit”? Don’t you think the two DJ’s are doing it tough right now (granted not as tough as the family of the nurse) but I cant see what other option the company could do other than offer them support or counseling?

Do you suggest they just wash their hands of them? Sack them immediately to try and save some face and limit the damage?

What gets me about views like this and even more extreme when people are calling for prison sentences and even worse is that if we went with that, then we would probably be dealing with more than just one suicide.

Rather than just sit back and continue to be the keyboard warrior that you always are on this site and continually throw out sweeping statements like “The radio station itself has shown no leadership in regard to the incident” What then would you do sir that would appease every single person who has an opinion or viewpoint on the situation???

I didn’t compare it directly to breaking the law. I was comparing how not expecting something might still have tragic consequences.

However, while we’re at it, it’s quite possible they broke the law in regard to the Telecommunications Act in regard to recording devices, acts that cover broadcasting, or acts that cover medical patient confidentiality.

Also the prank call wasn’t live. It was pre-recorded and ultimately the station (and their legal team) gave it the ok to go to air.

IMO absolutely no one could have foreseen these tragic consequences resulting from the call. You run a red light and I think it’s fair to say “You could have killed someone”.

Sometimes things can be pretty darn hectic in a hospital, emergency after emergency, a trying shift… my wife is a registered nurse and sometimes she is emotionally sapped by some shifts. In the heat of the moment, its not hard to see how the lady wouldn’t have picked up on it being a prank call – both nurses in fact.

It’s tragic and i’m shocked that she would take her own life over this, truly feel for her family and kids.

What’s with this silly commercial fm radio culture of prank calls and just stupid pranks in general to entertain the masses? (and they plug it incessantly all day long). I think the concept of calling a hospital, pretending to be someone else and once through, asking for medical updates is going too far for a laugh and borderline an invasion of privacy. This was taped, how on earth did the powers that be at the radio station see nothing wrong with this and give it the go ahead to go to air??

FTR I dont blame the 2 DJ’s too much, they are given orders of what is hip and current on commercial radio and work to those parameters – its like sales, they need good numbers or they are cactus.

Yes they should take some responsibility and will hopefully grow from this very sad occurance but this was tragically extreme on both sides of the spectrum. 1)Badger a pregnant woman in hospital to have a laugh publicly(ffs has the world gone mad?) and 2)someone to take their own life over this, even if it was the final straw(purely speculating but quite obvious imho that there must have been preceeding issues)

anyway, RIP nurse

The year of the tiger

Sydney, MMM, 1998, I remember a “phone prank” that was absolutely hilarious. They had this Sydney guy with a young family, call his Dad, back on the family farm in upper Woop Woop.
He started off by saying he is going to leave his wife, which caused the old fellow some consternation, and they discussed this for a while. The son went on to say that he had discovered he was gay.
Dad was getting beside himself, saying it was an abomination in the eyes of the Lord, and that type of thing.
After this wonderful build up the son asked if Dad would consider coming down to Sydney to participate on a float for Parents Supporting Gay Children in the Mardi Gras.
Dad said he could not possibly do that, son said only joking and everyone had a good laugh.

Seriously funny stuff, unlike this prank, which not even the village idiot would find vaguely amusing.

All they did was ask her how she was. And what was told was already public knowledge. The hoop-lah that followed was (to use a golfing term) way over the top.

I look forward to more info about the nurse and what the hospital bosses did, to come out. Then we can get over this witch hunt.

Seriously funny stuff,

what if the dad killed himself. Still seriously funny?

My point was that this was a very funny phone prank between a son and his father. The son knowing full well his Fathers character.

For some muppet to think up the idea of calling a Hospital and pretend to be the Queen, I cannot see any potential for humour in that situation.

GPJ, think this is a bit OTT.

If you are taking away radio licences for airing the sort of banality that is the prank call, there won’t be too many stations left broadcasting.

The two DJs are doing what many before them have done, if you haul them out in front of the media, lets also roll out Doug Mulray and his ilk who can explain why this stuff is amusing.

Everyone is looking for someone to blame, perhaps there is someone, perhaps not and like with most things there is some grey between the black and white. Thought Mike Carlton got it reasonably right in today’s SMH.

Hack,

For one thing, they shouldn’t have been allowed to do it in the first place … but then the stupid culture of radio stations these days leaves a lot to be desired.

Once they did it, and it was broadcast …... it was then the sponsors who led the way on the matter, and not the stations management.

They just went in damage control when they’re hands were being forced by the sponsor led backlash ….... rather than take any ownership or indeed leadership on this issue.

To my knowledge they are still squirming around rather than bite the bullet and get rid of the two dickheads responsible.

In regard to me being a “keyboard warrior” I’m sure you could apply that moniker to anyone who voices any opinion on any internet site ….... including for instance, your good self.

And as for “What then would you do sir that would appease every single person who has an opinion or viewpoint on the situation”?

You do realise that these radio shows have producers that come up with most of the ideas and give the go ahead for content to go to air? And the producers then report into Head of Content for the station. It runs a lot deeper than 2 ‘dickheads’ turning up and chewing the fat for a few hours.
