RETIRED federal MPs are threatening a High Court challenge to claw back millions of dollars in generous perks, including lifetime Gold Pass and superannuation payments.

Community outrage over the generous perks paid to retired MPs led to the prior reforms.

More than 25,000 free flights were taken by retired MPs and their families over the past decade, with former Speaker Ian Sinclair taking more than 750 flights costing over $250,000. Between July and December last year, Mr Sinclair and his family took 55 free flights costing $19,000, while former Liberal minister Geoff Prosser cost taxpayers $24,000 including $10,378 for three trips to Broome, where he has a holiday home.

Pollies want a cracker

Is it fair that entitlements are now taken away as it looks like many or rorting the system?

It’s probably the only job that pays you when you leave. I can see a reason to have a few staff for 6 months to wind down, but even that is pushing it. I have never had any time for Polititians as none of them appear to be in it to help the country it’s all obout them and how much they can rort the system.

Most Polititians make good money after politics using their contacts made during office, you don’t see a poor one all of them seem to be able to buy holiday homes etc, when their term finishes cut them off send, them away, no more perks.

I agree, those people who choose to serve the country should not be rewarded in anyway. They are all scum especially tol’s local member.

Tol’s local member is only a child. He shouldn’t be in Parliament anyways. He is only in it for the 6 figure salary.

and even Oprah likes VijayJay

+1.

And on top of that we should take away every entitlement that was agreed to when they were employed. Changing the rules is fun.

I ask my boss today can i take a keg home a week as perk he just luaghed and said not likely OZ

Now i have no objections to mps getting free travel for business neeeds for there job as a politician

but what makes them think they are differewnt to all of us that they need 25 free plane flights a year and those other perks other australians do not even recieve

it just shows how much they really care about the economy and the way Australia is

selfish blood pricks

while lots of families struggle to even go from footscray to melbourne for holiday these pellicks are getting free air fare to where ever they want in australia on yours and everyone elses money

if you want those perks then do not retire from the job

There is no way to try and secure these taxpayer-funded entitlements WITHOUT looking like the selfish greedy prick you are. There’s no PR way to spin something like this. Enjoy the perks while you’re in office, but gtfo once you’ve left.

The same should go for blokes in the defense force. Once you are no longer serving the country you should get zero perks.

My dad did 20 years in the RAAF, non combat but still, I think 20 years of service for your country warrants a low rate home loan at the very least.

Our politicians are not well paid, compared to business leaders. You pay peanuts and you get monkeys. That was partially offset by generous pension schemes and other perks.

I’d rather see them get better pay, making life as a pollie attractive compared to other jobs, and fewer perks, particularly after-service perks. Just let them fade into oblivion afterwards.

Tol, I sleep easy in my bed mostly due to the historically unparalleled global hegemony of the USA.

I do however have enormous respect for the people that serve in our armed forces and believe that probably deserve more. My comment was obviously taken literally which is pretty silly by most of you.

Our political leaders also serve this country as volunteers, like our armed service men and women, and while they are not all exactly who I would like representing us they sacrifice opportunity and a “normal” life. For the most part the deserve what they are paid, and probably more, as well as the retirement perks.

Pay them all a bit more and make them pay for their own expenses.

Once your retired, all perks are gone.

You have already stated in this thread you don’t agree with me. Which is it?

Just trying to make you feel better. Pollies are not really volunteers though as they are paid to do a job, that is the same as saying I was a volunteer when working.
I was not a volunteer and neither are they, they as was I are paid employees, we are their employers.

No one makes them enter into politics it is their choice, they know the conditions when they take on the job, the so called perks of retirement are not required as they always seem to fall on their feet after politics, being offered jobs by the contacts they made and favors they did whilst in office. The other point with perks is why should the whole family get free travel, they were not employed by us, it is not as if the travel is for official business that requires the inclusion of the family much of it is for holidays or personal business. I cant see why we should be paying for it, no employer should be required to pay for an employees holiday travel.
