Firefox Issues

Text in the posts on the forums doesn’t word wrap, just shoots off to the right and under the ads, didn’t know if any other Firefox users are having this issue and is there a fix?

Cheers

Spanky, I think this is an issue with people posting either images or URLs that are wider than the alloted space (before you run into the ads).

I use Firefox, and only see this problem in the circumstances described above – I think (presume) it does it with IE as well.

I.e. you can see that both our posts word wrap correctly now. But If I was to insert a wide image or long un-spaced string – the words would not start to wrap until the end of the string or image.

Yes this has been mentioned and answered in about 5 other threads. It was on the old forum and it’s on this one too and any other website. A URL is one big long word so it can’t break and same with images that are too wide.

People will hopefully use the link button provided and there won;t be a problem. Older posts from the old site will need to be fixed up one by one as we see them.

Hi Admin.

Would be handy if you could create a link when creating a new post.

The link button is there for additional posts, but not when create a new Topic.

Yep and being sorted out…...thanks

Just for what it’s worth, there don’t seem to be any issues with the new Safari for Windows. Even the reply window works properly, unlike Firefox which layers it below the bottom box.

I like the layout of this site, but as a Firefox user I’m particularly frustrated by the way this site handles URL’s and the overlapping of the reply box. I sympathise for you guys. I know what a bastard it can be to get things schmick between all browsers. I’m guessing that the old silte wasn’t compatible with VBulletin?

Surely there’s a different way to get the post/reply box to have focus. What about automatically truncating/trimming the displayed text in URL’s – while maintaining the link. Wouldn’t that be the best option (if it is an option)? Gets around the need to edit all of the existing long URL’s and people who fail to use the Link button. Maybe this link might be food for thought?

Second most popular browser, etc, etc…

Hi Divot – the links are nothing to do with FF. We use FF exclusively as our browser of choice.

The links wrap because people do not use the button provided on the right of the reply box which is there to avoid such problems. You simply hit the Link button enter the URL and title and you’re done.

Not sure what you mean about VBulletin? We used Invision before this system now. While this forum is not 100% it let’s us have full control which in time everyone will see the benefits of.

We may end up trimming url’s live but we hope people will learn to use the system provided because it is simple and effective and no different to what the previous site used.

Thanks for the feedback and hopefully the problem slowly disappears over time.

VBulletin. I’m sure you’ve seen it before. :) I think you’re always going to get people who forget or fail to use the Link button (but I like your optimism). Does this site have moderators? It’d be nice if the moderators could fix the current links or ask people to do it themselves in the case where long URL’s are used. As you know, one long URL really destroys a good thread. I don’t see an option to report threads, but if people requested that you guys fix those links, would that be an option? Of course the first option would be to ask the poster to edit their own post to use the link wrap.

What I was referring to in FF was the way the bottom menu overlaps the reply box as you scroll down, as per this image. I’ve experienced this in three different installs of Firefox so far. It doesn’t happen in IE or Opera.

Yes we do have moderators but some links get missed – hopefully we get most.

I know about VBulletin but wondered why you mentioned it?

Yes we are fully aware of the overlapping problem – it’s been mentioned and addressed in other threads. We’re going to move the reply box to the end of the thread, which will mean it’s okay for everyone. It’s not just an FF problem though.

Thanks for the feedback.

Oh sorry. I misinterpreted your post. I knew you guys had previously used a ready made forum engine and from what I’ve seen of VBulletin it’s quite a functional and malleable BB engine. It seemed to me that an easy and relatively trouble free way of setting up a forum was to use well established software. I don’t know what you guys are after, though as I said earlier, it’s a fairly nice and simple setup you have here. Just a couple of bugs that spoil the show. I’ll keep my trap shut now ;) Looking forward to when the forum is in it’s full working glory! :)

Hi Divot – yeh we used Invision – same as VB but much more modern and far better. However, with all premade software there is a lot fo stuff behind the scenes that makes it hard to maintain hence the change. We used pre-made software for the last 6 years – it worked well but we now need more control.

Appreciate the feedback and we hope you like the new features as they come along.
