Enough said. Well maybe not. Yesterday’s game was a standout, although it smelled of a match fix – time and time again Fevola was left 1-on-1 against a clearly lesser opponent. Surely Malthouse is smart enough to see that and compensate. Maybe not. He does work for Collingwood… Despite that, excellent kicking, marking, tackling and good solid ruck work. A preview of how these guys are gonna go in a couple of years time. And we CFC supporters should hope so after so many high draft picks. Some standout young guns in there, and Brett Thornton’s improvement so far this year has been surprising. Last year I thought he should be retiring with the old timers. I still think they need an additional go-to man up forward rather than resting their laurels on Fevola. Nevertheless, good signs.

mate it was fantastic to see the boys get up. you’re right, fevola is too hot and cold. but when he’s on there’s no one better. “we are the navy blues….”

There’s heaps of Carlton supporters in here. Was kinda hoping a few more of them would come out of the woodwork and share their thoughts. Fev is definitely an outstanding scoring machine. I reckon maybe Jonathan Brown would be a close second to Fev, asuming you compare them at their best. Both have different strong points. For me, Fev’s kicking accuracy and tenacity with tackling puts him in front. I think they now have the individual talent to get up the ladder, but they need experience and organisation as a team. Looked to me from that game that in two or three years, they’ll be a force to be reckoned with. Sounds audacious to say that, and maybe it is…

Not a Caarrrlllttin man but they are better than they play, Fevs or not no forward is going to score much without Stick withem im sure youll be gloatin before to much longer
|
|
Theres no doubt Fev on form is outstanding but I would definately have Brown in my side and even Franklin as they are more complete players.
|
|
They may win two in a row with this week against Melb. Carlton havent won two in a row since about 1996 right?
|
|
I agree on all counts. Where they lack at the moment is the inability to consistenently function as a team. All too often there are missed passes and kicks, but when they’re on song they score well. I’ve supported Carlton all my life. My grandfather played for them in the early VFL days and my Dad grew up in Carlton so I never really had a choice :p The only reason I put Fev ahead of Brown (based on their ability, not their consistency) is because they’re both full forwards. Brown is less accurate and not renowned for his tackling. On a more realistic level, Brown would have to be the better player because of consistency. Uh… it’d probably be around the time that John Elliott left, so closer to 1999-2001. Either way it’s a long time.

sorry Hozel…...Brown is a lot better, but franklin no. Hawthorn are the real deal this year and the service franklin is getting is first class. put that service to brown and fev and they would be streets ahead of franklin. He is still a freak and gonna be a great player but better than fev, i can’t agree.

Shoot me down if u wish but i reacon Lappin has been His work ethic was second to none just didnt have
|
|
Agreed that Lappin has been one of their best for years. I was wondering where he’d gotten to this year. Northern Bullants and assistant to Brett Ratten. Apparently he left prematurely to make way for the young guys. Unselfish. Eddie Betts is under-rated, but he has time to further demonstrate his worth.

I think signing up ratten was a fantastic idea. I live up in qld and grew up in north qld (but was in melbourne frequently) so if i am wrong about this i apologise in advance, but does anyone agree that steve silvagni should be on the coaching staff? also, DIVOT, I beleive at their peak Fev is definately better than Brown, Brown goes to ground to much for my liking and elimates most oppurtunities to play on quickly. Having said that, Brown is the more valuable of the two at present bc Fev is soooooo inconsistent. But the best thing Carlton did was off that lazy bludger Lance Shitnall

Off topic What part of Nth Qld Gribbles?

Another one ?
A bad day on the golf course is better than no golf at all.

Agreed that Ratten’s a good choice. He made an interesting statement after the last game, saying that Carlton can go toe to with other teams at pace but the risk of the opposition scoring more is high, but if Carlton control the tempo they can control the game. Exactly what they did versus the Pies. That’s all good for nothing if they can’t connect passes. I saw Silvagni in the coaching box for another team and I remember thinking “bloody traitor”. I imagine he’d be an awesome defense coach. He could also take his wife along for moral support. What happened to Stephen Kernahan? Anyone know if he’s still in Carlton circles? I haven’t heard anything about him since Pratt was made Club President. Yeah Whitnall became a disappointment. He was good early on, but lost it for the rest of his career. Same applies for Kouta after his injury. I’m also in QLD (Fraser Coast). Seems like Queenslanders make up half of this forum!

franky b- i grew up in townsville mate, but haven’t been back there for about six years now. WE ARE THE NAVY BLUES….. WE ARE THE OLD, DARK, NAVY BLUES…. I know it was only melbourne, but still its two in a row for the first time in a long time!!

Yeah. Now let’s hope they can make it three in a row. Wishful thinking, but not impossible. Pity they don’t televise AFL at reasonable hours in QLD, let alone more than two or three matches. Statistically it’s more popular here than rugby league… One of the few things I miss about living in Melbourne. Another thing I miss is the good Asian restaurants. Seems like QLD is antonymous with good Asian food. Carn the Blues!

Silvagni is the defensive coach for St Kilda. GO THE SAINTS!!!
|

Bah. Traitor. At least the Blues don’t have a gay gazette named after their team :p

west coast who? how good do the blues look with judd in the engine room. the guy is just absolute class on and off the field. carlton will probably sneak into the finals this year but won’t make any noise.I tell you what though look out next year! go the navy blues!!!!!

Yeah I was pretty happy with their performance. I don’t think they’ll get into the finals this year but when they’re on, they’re definitely on. I’m tipping they’ll only win two more games this season, which I’m happy with. If they win more, that’ll be a real bonus. They’ve got a few niggling issues with pass completion and team awareness (passes to marked players = turnover) but once they iron that out, they’re undoubtedly going to be a finals team.

Gribbles Watched replay of Blues v Power on Fox…..Power were a “RABBLE” especially when Carlton finally got some momentum in that last quarter! Wouldn’t get too wrapped in that performance as its one of the most INSIPID Power efforts I have ever seen. Some of those younger Blues did however show some grit when they could see their opportunity in that last quarter. Unfortunately, these players are still going through that learning phase & also need to concentrate for the whole game. The unforced turnovers are still a BIG problem!

i think the biggest problem is that fev does not seem to step up in the tight games. whether its poor service or something else, its all well and good to kick 6-8 in a loss but in the tight ones he only seems to manage 2 or 3 max. that to me is a masive concern. i still beleive that one of the most crucial players on the team is eddie betts. he’s an incredible talent and is only going to get better and better.

No offence Gribbles, but I don’t think that’s a fair statement. Many teams put two players on Fev to shut him down. In that sort of scenario, Carlton have a loose man, yet they still have difficulty getting it up forward. Regardless of how much pressure is on Fev, he’s not going to be able to make an impact if they can’t get the ball to him. To echo my previous posts and also The_Vicar’s post, it seems pretty clear to me that the biggest problem is turnovers. I’m hoping that Carlton flog the Pies again, but to contradict one thing I just said, I don’t think Malthouse will make the same mistake as last time by puttin a single, inexperienced defender on Fevola. Although I do believe that the last game was rigged and that this one will be too – for a Colling wood win.

Woohoo! Welcome to the top eight, boys :D If you’d told me earlier this year they’d make it up there this year I would have called bullshit. I realise it’s a tough run into the finals and they’re not likely to stay in the eight, but they’ve exceeded my expectations so far. A great game. Loved the final quarter. Which Blues supporter wouldn’t?! Fev had an odd game… 8 goals and five behinds. Doesn’t matter if he boots half of those in the final quarter. They still count :) Now just 3 goals behind Lance Franklin in the goal tally, with Franklin potentially looking at suspension. They’re defintely getting better. Like in the last Pies match, Thornton was surprising. If you’d told me earlier this year that I’d come to respect him as a player, I’d have called bullshit on that too! Great performances all ‘round – exceptional work from Scotland, Betts and Stevens.

Divot Celebrate divot, great team effort last quarter, The PIES are a bit overated in my opinion! Don’t think they will go much further, but shows bit of promise for the future. Anyway to beat the PIES twice this year is a BONUS. GO BLUE BOYS
