I listened and watched most of the sydney test and have read just about every peice relating to the game and I just cant stand peter roebuck. I never really liked him in the first place, but to call for ponting to resign and then say he was just trying to get the idea out in the open, and then that he did us all a favour by bringing things to a head. what a tosser. I stopped reading his articles on saturday after I heard on SEN that he had been convicted of assault. the following is from wikipedia and is backed up by newpaper articles.

“Roebuck in 2001 was given a suspended jail sentence after admitting caning three young cricketers he had offered to coach. He pleaded guilty to three charges of common assault involving three South African teenagers between 1 April and 31 May, 1999.[1] Roebuck was originally accused of indecent assault but pleaded guilty to lesser charges of common assault. However, the judge said he did not accept the purity of Roebuck’s motives. He said: “It was not appropriate to administer corporal punishment to boys of this age in circumstances such as these. It seems so unusual that it must have been done to satisfy some need in you.” Ian Fenny prosecuting said: “Roebuck then pulled the boy towards him, in what appeared to be an act of affection. He then asked if he could look at the marks on the boy’s buttocks, something which he in fact did.”

Do not know anything about Roebuck. But he sounds a complete tosser.

I’ve never minded Peter Roebuck as a cricket commentator on the radio. His perpective and tone of voice never caused me to switch off. In the written press he was far more opinionated and some of his articles did annoy me.

I thought his fetish for young men was fairly well known thoughout the cricket world. I tend to think he looks at young cricketers as petulant young men and they need a pounding…err..maybe that should read some punishment?

and apparently he was instumental in sacking brian lara from his county team. smart move!

the judges comments suggest he satisfied “some need” in spanking these boys. I think that reflects his attitudes, especially to colonials and foreighers. to read the court quotes and then have him talk about racism in sport is enough to make me sick.

I will be happliy skipping over his articles from now on.

Hated in England, particularly in Somerset, where he was instrumental in the great Somerset team’s, including Garner, Botham and Richards, sad decline…..

All he did was attract attention to his sordid past ! He should not lecture people on their morals when he has caned some south african lads for pleasure.

And then he suggests Katich should be Australia’s captain.

Roebuck has been backtracking and trying to make amends over the last week – he realises his original attack on Ponting was ill considered.

But his article today is just about right.
