I was just reading up on the “poorest sportsmans” thread, and thought, “Who in this world would win a best and fairest award?” The only professional sportsman I could think of was Adam Gilcrest. Any other you guys can think of?

It's the only game in the world where you can call penalty on yourself. It's the greatest game there is.

Only person I would rate a better sportsman is Adam Gilchrist. ;-) One of the last true sportsmen left. He’s a rare example of a person who puts the ideals of the game before his own personal success.

I reckon anyone who follows motorsport would agree that Craig Lowndes is one of this rare breed.

yeah well said, Lowndes seems to be a pretty good guy.

have to agree on adam gilchrist cant remember the last time i saw a guy walk when he was out you can tell his not a pom or kiwi who wait for the raised finger

I’m not an Essendon supporter but I would have to say James Hird is a perfect role model. I’m not big on people expecting sportsmen to be perfect in every way, but to my mind James definately is.

Superb chap , that Cousins fellow. A five day cocaine bender in L.A. with two floozies. And we all thought he was going back to rehab ! Silly us.

Seriously though – I always thought John Eales in rugby was a total gentleman, scrupulously fair and an all-round great guy.

Tennis – Federer
Golf – Player, Nicluas
Rugby -Eales and Gregan
AFL – Troy Cook and David Wirrpanda

And Ben Cousins well lets just let him recover from his demons. The Eagles will clean out their closets and deal with all the shit. They were too easy on all the players and now they are paying for it.

C’mon the Dockers

Did you say “Gregan” ? This thread is for BEST and fairest nominations thankyou. So delete Gregan and type in Farr-Jones. There. That’s better.

MrConsistency is a bit obsessed with iseekgolf…

What about Mr Cricket himself Mike Hussey i think he is a great sportsman

Gilchrist has walked how many times exactly ?

I’m not too sure if Huss walks (as in I actually don’t know!) but I think he doesn’t. He’s a very talented cricketer and definately worth his spot in the Australian side but in terms of putting cricket before personal success I reckon Gilly takes the cake.

Darryn Lockyer, Jonathon Thurston and Matt Bowen. Just to cover the rugby league vote….all for what they give to the kids…all of them being Queenslanders just help their cause.

David Peachey, thats my vote, great guy, and after retirement hes giving back to the game through junior development.
i also think Monty Panesar is a great sportsman, he stopped and talked to me and a few of my friends last year at the Nsw vs Eng first class match, definately another one to the list, he was a great bloke and ended up asking us questions about school and who we play cricket for.

Peachey, for most of his career I thought to be a top bloke and ambassador for the game, the last two or three seasons his attitude changed and I placed him in the wanker basket. Having said that he is giving a lot back since retirement and I applaude him for that, I don’t know where his head was at for those last couple of years though.

I’ll answer my own question then …. Gilly has walked ONCE in Test cricket. Don’t get me wrong, I love him. But I don’t think its right to label him a “walker” as this implies multiple times …....... he did it once and we think the sun shines outta his @rse.

Well he certainly doesn’t wait for the finger to get raised before he starts back at the pavilion unlike some others out there who knick it to 2nd slip and then rub their elbow..

Jamie Whincup has just won the 2007 Barry Sheene Award, an award for best and fairest so i guess he deserves a mention.

He has handled himself incredibly well this season and i wonder how much of that is due to Lownde’s mentoring.
Lowndes himself was mentored by the late Peter Brock.

Ford drivers for the most part are gentleman on the track, they don’t need to take cars out to win….unlike those other cretins.

Not keen on a ford VS holden debate but yeah ive noticed the same thing.

Ford hasn’t had a bad guy since Longhurst, even Ingal went soft when he joined the oval.
It will be interesting to see him teamed up with Paul Morris ( the dirtiest driver in living memory) next year.

Gotta agree here.Whincup handles himself pretty well compared to some of the other drivers. He lost the championship by what, a couple of points but was still man enough to admit the better man won.

Good bloke.

Valentino Rossi and he doesn’t even feel the need to wear the number 1 plate, can’t remember anyone else doing that.

"Happiness is a long walk with your putter"- Greg Norman

The late great Barry Sheene did it back in the day, He was always number 7

Rossi is a god on two wheels and has more charisma than the rest of the field combined but i feel his public spats with his rivals has taken something away.

I cant actually think of a recent F1 or moto gp rider i would award a best and fairest to. That level of pressure and competition seems to bring out the worst in them.
Doesn’t mean i don’t admire their feats.
