West Coast Eagles - bringing the game into disrepute

Is it about time that the AFL sought to bring in a loss of points for clubs continually bringing the game into disrepute?

In the last 18 months we've seen Ben Cousins avoiding RBT's and well documented love of nose candy, Daniel Kerr assaulting randoms and trying to buy horse tranquilisers as the other gear doesn't give enough kick, Michael Gardner implicated in various off field scandals, and now Michael Braun arrogantly dropping the f-bomb live on tv and young Selwood giving the mother of all sprays to Dessie Headland resulting in Headland wanting to kill the bloke.

This mob seems unaccountable for their actions both on and off the field, and the West Australian doesn't seem to want to put the boot in and get them off side for fear of losing their access to the club.

I would like to see a three strikes policy for major incidents like this imposed on Clubs - after three istrikes in a 2 year period, clubs would lose 4 Premiership points. After a 4th strike, they lose 12 premiership points.

I'm happy for it to be shot down in flames, but this club and a number of their players seem to think they are bigger than the game and bigger than the law. Its about time they were brought into line...

Agreed. They are fast becoming a laughing stock...you'd have to think sponsors would be having second thoughts about having their name associated with a club that just can't seem to get a grip on what is acceptable behaviour.

Caroline Wilson (god love her) was bagged by a number of sporting commentators for suggesting that she would not want her son playing for the Eagles. As a father of a young bloke, I couldn't agree more. I wouldn't want my boy associating with low life like Ben Cousins and Daniel Kerr.

Calm down champ. I think that you are being a bit harsh.

It's not like they have had a $10 bet on the Brownlow Medal or said that the umpiring is disgraceful.

Beware of cheap imitations - Especially from the US

um,

wbennett, don't you barrack for Collingwood?

There's some pots and kettles and blackness here somewhere.

How are the players bringing the game into disrepute, such guys are only bringing themselves into disrepute.

IMHO Joe Public can tell the difference, and let the employers (and his peers) sort it out.

Some old fashioned belt ups at training would do some of these guys a world of good, ie fell down the stairs.

For further information, send me a PM?

my thoughts exactly. WCE are saints compared to the Thugs down at the lexus centre.

I love how a few (and it is only a few individuals) discretions and you want to penalise everyone involved.

So its okay if you get your pay docked even though you bust your guts day in day out, and do the right thing, but the guy next to you does something inappropriate?

These cases have to be treated on a case by case and individual basis.

Anyone hear what was actually said to Des?

I know the Pies are no angels, but they have not gone around snorting kilos of coke and getting caught up in police stings with organised crime figures etc.

Brodie belted the missus and had his day in court, and we got rid of serial 'incident victims' in Cam Cloke and Chris Tarrant.

Anyway - back to the point - is it time to bring in a code of conduct expected of AFL Players and Clubs, especially now as misdemeanors and misbehaviour seems to be more common and the offences are seemingly getting more serious?

Reportedly, this was along the lines of what was said - quoted from The Age on line

It is alleged by Headland that during the third quarter Selwood, pointing to the tattoo of Madisan on Headland's left bicep, said "I f

-. I f---ed her."

If it happened in pub league, the bloke would have had his jaw busted and ten blokes waiting for him out the back of the sheds...

the defence of 'i didn't know it was his daughter' is a bit weak.

When a bloke has a tat of a little girl under the age of 10, its probably going to be someone pretty important...

So headland was offered 5 weeks - it will be interesting to see what Selwood is given. This will certainly fall into the same court as racial vilification

Par for the course on the cricket field playing australia

The ones bringing the game into disrepute are the AFL and Andrew Demetriou with the f.ckin (learnt that new word from Braun) stupid three strikes drugs policy. Must be one of the few if any sports where you get three chances at taking illegal or banned drugs before you get a suspension.

And get rid of that new push in the back rule as well...

What was Brauny thinking?? classic stuff.
i think Selwood went too far but as long as he apologises to Dessie and says he regrets what he said, leave it on the field.
You only have to look at Headland sideways and he will smash you, doesnt need much provoking.

What we need is another PPV Celeb boxing night.

PS. If anyone said that to me about my daughter on a golf course I'd shank them so hard with an 8 iron they'd have a permanent amihsakaN brand on their forehead.

not one of Selwood's finest choices of sledge.

I've heard a lot worse on the footy field... it's not like he was sledging him over something factual e.g. race etc. Des is pretty mentally soft to get sucked into something like that.

Geez i'm sure Josh Carr has said a lot worse over his time

Headland had an ordinary game as per usual and had to take it out on someone

it heads into pediphile territory and the AFL will probably make an example out of him.
very much just a young fired up bloke saying something stupid which he regretted as soon as was said.
Apparently he reckons he said the tatt looked like a chick he had slept with!! does that help or hurt his case?

If it transpired the way Headland claims he's screwed!!

My interpretation, Des said that's my daughter (unsure if he said 6 year old) which in my mind means you say sorry, any further sledge about said daughter after this forfeits your rights to life.

If anyone said they'd like to or had **** my daughter, who is younger than Des's, better enjoy their last few breaths!!!

As for them being untouchable, you only have to look at what happened at Tigerland for them to lose TAC. Collingwood players have done worse since and they are still sponsoring them. Zero tolerance only suits when you have someone in mind!!! Otherwise Collingwood and West Coast would be minus a few sponsors!!

thats the whole thing in a nutshell and Selwood's error.

Wbennett has a point. It is obvious that WC knew about many of the problem the players were 'engaged' in. Surely they have some responsibility for essentially setting the precedent for failing to deal with cousins mid last year.

Faldo's Lovechild is spot on with the biggest issue - Demetriou's stupid social experiment with the drugs policy - apparently it's okay to break the law if you're an AFL player as long as you only do it twice. Actually, as long as you only get caught twice! And as some players have confirmed, you can go a whole eason without being tested! It's a disgrace!

Actually FLC, I wonder if The Shark ever said to Nick that he shagged you on the course? Perhaps that's what made Nick so determined at Augusta in '96?

problem with this statement is that our laws are so retarded, its only illegal to posess the drugs, not to take them. Obviously, to take them you need to posess them first, but apparently you can't actually be booked for testing positive to any illicit drugs - unless of course you are driving a car.

It's not actually a crime to take drugs, only to traffic them or be in possession of a certain quantity (varies from drug to drug).
