AFL 2007 Season

Thought I would start a non team based thread about the up coming season.

Just been reading about the AFL thinking about bringing back the Magoos (Reserves)? What do people think about this.

I can see some good things about it, mainly guys getting a strong game each week who are not in the main side, especially Sydney and Lions whos guys go back and play in the NSWFL and QAFL.

But at the same time the VFL has thrived since the change, so like most things there are Pros and Cons.

The only bad part is that they are saying that they would not play the reserves as curtain raisers, which would have been a big bonus but I guess the whole ground condition thing is an issue.

The cost side of things is prohibitive. Flying the 1sts around is expensive enough, without adding the McGoos and their coaching staff.

I agree the VFL is a pretty good comp now - not sure how they are all going financially.

Bugger the Swans and the Bears. I've been in Sydney 9months now, and you would think that the Swannies were the only team in the comp. Ohh them and Russel Crowes team of course.

bugger the Swans and th Bears - they get enough help.

I used to love going to the VFA on a Sunday, we were big Prahran fans when they were still around.
I think they at least should let the VFL games be palyed before the main game when applicable.
I would love to watch the young Tiges running around for Coburg before the seniors played.

The most practical and needy is indeed to incorporate Brisbane and Sydney into the Vic comp. Perth and Adelaide have very strong reserves comps in their own right, and would resist joining the national comp because the eastern clubs would get a look at potential draft picks!

The Sydney comp is patently too weak to support the Swans reserves. Heaven forbid I even played in it and I'm not sure it's much better now. The rep side would be thrashed by the Ovens & Murray rep side. So it's not a good support mechanism for the development of Sydney footy.

I know the QAFL is better but it's still not as good as the VFL. Maybe once the Kangas relocate they'll improve the comp enough to keep Brissy out of it.

Way back when I used to go to the footy regularly at the 'G',it was always good to see the magoos game to see how everyone was travelling. You get a preview of the young talent not far away from a seniors berth and it would also get you in the mood for the big game ahead.

While it might be expensive to initiate a proper 2nds competition, after a few years we will see the benefits of it. Young players will get used to travelling around with the team and surely the quality of the competition will put all team on an even playing field. With all the money the AFL has aquired from TV rights, now they might be able to help fund this.

The swans reserves play against the ACT AFL teams. Quite a strong league, although having said that they swannies are by far the strongest team. An issue is you have a team of professionaly footballers (swans reserves) playing against amatuer footballers.

Yes Eddie...

And the Pies haven't had any help recently? My what a favourable draw you have Eddie..

favourable because we play Carlton twice? laugh.gif

Carlton have been really unlucky with the draw in the last two years. All sides got to play the wooden-spooners at least twice, sometimes four times over the last two years. Carlton - zero games!

Good to see Carlton in the NAB Cup final - they have had a tough draw. I think all games have been against sides with extensive pre-seasons (ie didn't make last year's finals) that were raring to go in the pre-season.

Yes, you get to share our revenue yet again. If it wasn't for us, you couldn't afford to pay the salaries of all those second tier players with first tier contracts.

you never cease to amuse Peanuts.

ironic that a club that thinks its full of intellectuals can't operate in the black, and a club allegedly run by bogans makes millions tongue.gif

I support a team whose VFL affiliate has won the premiership for the last three years. It's a good relationship, and I'm not sure I'd want to see a resurrection of the AFL reserves. The VFL affiliate is allowed 12 AFL players each week, but for other purposes is essentially independent.

The only downside is that having good non-AFL players (like Sautner at FF) in your VFL affiliate (Sandy) may block some of your young AFL-listed players (e.g. Newton) from advancing in the same position. So they can get stuck in the VFL reserves and miss some higher-level game experience.

The upside is the reasonable standard, which is probably just as good if not better than an AFL reserves side would be, and the premiership seems to be more of an incentive than just an AFL Reserves flag.

If "successful" means "whipping boy for the 9 network", then he's a very, very successful man.

A very successful bloke, with a very sore...

Lets see, Eddie or Dick? which one would you chose...I'll take successful billionaire over a glorified game show host laugh.gif

if you need one guys money to buy your club out of trouble, you're not much of a 'club'.

Doesn't Eddie make most of his money out of private ventures? Which betting agency does he own again?

Devastating news for the Roos.

Not the Footy Show curse back already is it???

Poor bloke, is a shame to see someone go down when they were only supposed to be playing 50-60 mins of football and will now miss the whole season

Apparently Daniel Bradshaw has done his knee as well. Out for the year.
