That’s only cause Darrly Cullinan batted at 5!

You are correct bump, spinners should be getting more withers later in the game. But again Lyon is bucking this trend a little. Here is his wickets by innings 1st 17 27% of total wickets But then again, Warne bucks it a little as well, but still has more in the 3rd and 4th than 1st and 2nd. Here is the comparison to Warne. 1st 156 22%

I might be a little one-eyed here as I’m a fan, but I don’t think the stats your throwing give way to the bagging Lyon cops from everyone. Or am I missing something?? As far as I’m concerned, the spinners job is to clean up the tail. And that’s pretty much what he does. I’d be very surprised if any finger spinner in the world has a better record against the top order than the tail enders (but I’ll stand corrected if you prove me wrong). It’s the fast bowlers who’s job it is to rip and and smash the ‘batsmen’. Like Shanks mentioned, he has gotten to 50 wickets quicker than any other Aussie off spinner, and god knows we’ve had some good offy’s over the years…. :) And I don’t think comparing him to Warney is a good comparison, or Murali for that matter!! ;)

Murali got a couple of his poles off no-balls so they don’t count. I have been at the Gabba and joined in screaming out “NO BALL” to both Shoab and Murali, that’s just the type of person I am

No you are right lip, stats do not tell the whole story. And while Placegetter asked for Warne’s stats for comparison purposes, it is unfair to compare the two as bowlers, they are very different. While you are a fan, personally I don’t see how Lyon is any different to Hauritz or Dohety. Krezja had it for a while because the threw it up and didn’t mind going for runs if the batsman were willing to take a risk. I don’t know what the spinner solution is, but my opinion is that it isn’t Nathan Lyon.

I thought of Daz “the bunny” Cullinan as well for the batman dismissed who batted at 5 but I dug a little deeper into the stats well. It wasn’t him. A fellow S. Affer- Ashwell Prince was dismissed 7 times batting at 5, Nathan Astle 6 times. Poor Ashwell played Warne in 9 tests and fell victim on 11 occasions. All up he only dismissed Cullinan 4 times in tests.
