George Bailey-Why?

Do we have someone one this site who knows a bit about cricket? The problem in this case is George Bailey and his current place in the Aussie team. My limited understanding is that he was/is the Tassie captain and that they’ve been going ok recently. However ,I don’t think he’s a very good player;at all and can’t understand why he gets a guernsey.
Is it something I’m just not seeing ?Please explain in layman’s terms so I can add to my limited store of cricket knowledge.

Maybe you could allow Jimmy back in.He always seemed to have the inside info on what was happening in cricket. What do you reckon Madam, we need someone who knows what they’re talking about.

His stats suggest he is pretty good

http://www.cricket.com.au/s...

he replaced Cam White as Captain, because the Bear lost form drastically, and struggled in all forms of the game

compare him to Watson

http://www.cricket.com.au/s...

and you would go, why isn’t he skipper, well because the Watto is more injury prone than a 10 year full forward…...

Long term Bailey is solid, good SR and he has good leadership, and knows how to run things out on the ground, he captained Tassie very well etc.

it is what it is…….

... Since punter left they needed a token taswegian batsman in the side??

That’s all I can come up with.

As a cricketer the Coverdrive was the hardest shot to master. As a golfer, I can achieve it with frustrating regularity.

That’s what I actually thought.

I dont think anyone knows what is going on with the aussie sides these days.

Too many “pretty boys” and not enough gorillas.

But you look at shield cricket and it is isnt a surprise we are struggling to field a semi decent team. Lucky if there is 1 decent bowler in a team and the rest of medium trundling pie chuckers.

Even a myopic Koala can stumble onto a nice patch of gum-leaves occasionally;or so it seems.

I liked Bailey’s comments

he said I’m not Mike Hussey nor am I Ponting

he said he doubts that his spot in this side will ever be safe

that means he will value it as Hussey did

Finch isnt good enough IMO

Bolwers have worked him out

Shaun Marsh is and needs another go

Golf is only a game…Yeah right who are you kidding?

Maybe Bailey explained to a few peoples why he is there with his innings…...
He also seems to have a reasonable cricket brain looking at some of his work in captaining the side, and also the respect of the side….

Time will tell

Maybe he’s not too bad then.

do the guy a favour
he has played all over the world
and scored lots of runs…regularly.
better than having me on the team

I take it you’re not Brett Geeves then.Bailey at least acknowledges that he doesn’t look all that flash going about his work, so that’s a start.

nice innings the other night…....

Hi Simon, just wondering why you asked this question, got a considered response, with emperical data to back it up, the George in question then makes a very nice 100 later in the series, Captains the One Day Team well and you then compare this to the nocturnal wanderings of a myopic koala.

It would appear that maybe you are the myopic koala….......

The problem isnt George bailey per se, but his method of selection and appointment as captain.

It would appear that you are George Bailey’s brother. That had to be one of the streakiest tons ever compiled btw.

Some of Steve Waughs greatest 100’s were streaky, I’m not suggesting George is the next Tugga, and he sure don’t bat like Jr, but his numbers stack up against Watto’s.

Unfortuantely, as yesterday in Chennai showed clearly, the Selection Panel have issues. They got it wrong going in with 3 seamers, but Doherty didn’t deserve a spot on form, and neither did Maxwell.

and no, George and I are not related. I’m Victorian, and would have stuck with Cam White…......
