Phelps way ahead of his peers, no one even comes close to sneaking a win from him, Thorp aways had others snapping at his heels or beating him, Phelps will have a legacy that will probably outlast any discussion of Tiger Woods

He breaks record after record. And in doing so is thrashing his competition.

If he was black.. part asian.. and called cheetah or something.. i guess it would be a little convenient.

Phelps is very very good over a number of different events, but it is a different era to the one Thorpe swam in.

Thorpe was dominant in the 400m free,no-one really ever snapped at his heels, (unless you count a few seconds as being snapping) with no-one still getting near the WR he set, but I dare say when Phelps drops the 400IM he may be the one to do it.

Funny how no one in the US gives a crap about swimming until the ‘lympics come ‘round. Then we have “swimming experts” on the tele talking about how it stroke “pops” and how his brain is “working hard” during the race and all these other annoy crap.

We shouldn’t get too carried away. The 2 world records set by Stephanie Rice in the IM are faster than those of the men in 1972. The breast stroke records and the 800m free are also faster. The 4×200m free relay record is now only 1 sec behind the US mens record including M. Spitz.
If this improvement continues the chicks will be faster than Phelps in 40 years.

I love my golf and have the utmost respect for Tiger but Phelps is better at his sport than Tiger is at his (IMO). Great, great athlete.

I gage the great’s of sport against the best of the rest. Sir Don is still twice as good in averages against the best of the rest. Walter Lyndrum had the rules changed because of his skill.

Phelps will end up being to same in medals. It is a bar raising effort he is doing.

Tiger is great as well as he caused the change in golf course lay out.

Phelps has a few scary genetic properties. He’s a possible candidate for Marfan Syndrome. It’ll need to be monitored for the rest of his life if he wants a normal lifespan. As a kid he was ADHD and on Ritalin.

Super tall basketballers can also die at a relatively early age. Some track and field athletes suffer heart problems later in life from the “super-training”.

There’s also a penalty for being rich and famous. Having a camera shoved up your nose every waking minute and the invasion of privacy by paparazzi is not my idea of paying a fair price for notoriety.

I remember when Spitz did his thing and how in awe we were of him at the time – all these years on and Phelps makes a permanent mark on the Olympic stage – well done mate!
