Sonny Bill Williams quits NRL and leaves Bulldogs for France Star NRL and Bulldogs backrower Sonny Bill Williams has reportedly walked away and quit the Bulldogs and the National Rugby League in the past 48 hours. Information on Sonny Bill Williams quitting the game is still sketchy, but insiders believe that SBW may have already left the country. (Australia) And could be heading for France to Rugby Union in Toulouse. No word to his team mates – no word to his fans – contract still in place – didn’t show for the special kiddies charity – calls to have him banned Internationally – NRL boss has said the the door is definately shut for SBW! Good ridance!!

Poor form, specially after what he said when Mason left the doggies, but I would like to get all the details before I pass judgment on him.

Usually the same – make up my own mind but all the boys seem to have the heads up and his team boss has bagged him as has the NRL bosses – they wouldn’t do that unless they knew what’s what!

Well I would be peeved too if one of my star players walked out! But as a spectator, I will reserve judgment till I hear what he has to say.

If I was in charge of the Bulldogs I’d be asking myself what I’d done wrong, losing my two top players in two seasons… to much blaming the other bastard in this country, these people should look to their own backyards first before they put everything off onto a man of such talent who in the end is only looking after himself and his future. They only have themselves to blame and if I was a member I’d be yelling very loud for a change of Committee, very loud indeed…. not to mention the NRL should be shitting themselves, their Salary Cap is a waste of time, it’s losing them stars, and it will cost them big time on the world scene….

As I have mentioned before Cliff – the salary capping is rubbish in NRL and while there is lots of dollars throughout the world for Union (and so there should be as it’s the game) the NRL will fade to insignificance eventually – the point here with SBW is not him leaving the dogs but how he left – just not the Aussie way and probably why he holds a kiwi passport! Kiwi, no insult intended :-)

No salary cap & in a few years you will have 2 or 3 clubs dominating the league because they have more money than the others as they have in the premier league in England. SBW has a contract with the dogs & should fulfill that contract before moving on or suffer the consequences of breaking that contract
A bad day on the golf course is better than no golf at all.

Surely his manager should have told him that he would be in breach of his contract. Find it hard to believe that his manager was unaware of him going. If I was the Bulldogs, I’m get him for breach of contract but do they really want someone there that doesn’t want to be?
|
|
Like Gasnier he gets a better deal on text messages. It’ll be all forgotten soon. The dogs have recruited well for next year and the last time a big name star did the dash it was forgotten quick enough. It’s sad for the game that this happens as fans will keep looking to other codes. There needs to be more loyalty in the NRL then the fans may stay more loyal.
|
|
Loyalty, rubbish…SBW stated openly that a player must remain loyal to himself and his family first – I agree with that statement – what I don’t agree with is the way the lowlife left the kiddies in the lurch and his team when under contract to both – There doesn’t need to be more loyalty as Aussies are loyal, what there needs to be is more dollars matched to that of Union…

Think about this the salary cap has to stay if it doesnt you will have three or four teams staying at the top of the comp as their the only ones who will be able to afford it, so the competition will be come boring and loose even more spectators. The reason they go over seas whether for union or league is money, the population base/business base is so much greater than australia therefor the money will never be here, short term or long term. Union is throwing money at league players but ignoring the grass roots. The second and third tier competitions are where the future wallabies are going to come from, but if the standard doesnt improve in those competitions then union will suffer in the long run.

Beautifully said. Thats exactly the point. They have to have a salary cap to keep the competition open. Ideally they would have a draft as well but that got rolled in the courts. There are already clubs going broke because the Sydney public won’t spend their hard-earned on supporting their football team( their right of course) and the companies just won’t pay big dollars unless they are getting returns. Same problem as the golf sponsorship. US tourneys worth $6 mill every week but we can’t get a once a year sponsor for our national open. Its all about population base. I hope sonny bill invests his $3 mill wisely because the NRL will pursue this case to the hilt and there will be a substantial legitimate damages claim by the bulldogs. The difference between this one and gasnier and the others is that they all had clauses in their contracts which allowed them to get out. SBW doesn’t. He has a binding contract for the next 4 years.

Surely some blame has to be laid at the door of the dogs management. I agree he has done the wrong thing (if true).

I doubt this one will slide away. The NRL have tightened up on contracts and are keen to stop the player drain where they can. They will now refuse to register a contract that has “cop out” clause e.g. Gasniers. Apparently Billy Slaters was the last one that they allowed, since then they just won’t allow the clubs to do it. They are keen to enforce the fact that if you sign a contract, it is binding. I think you will see a general decrease in the length of contracts because of i this. Many more 1 and 2 year deals. Part of the bulldogs damages claim wil be that they will have been able to retain players like O’Meley if they hadn’t been committed to SBW for $400k a year. There is a definite flow on effect. Williams seems pretty dumb and obviously his manager is only a tad smarter. He is obviously getting bum advice from somewhere. He would ahve been far smarter , even if he wanted to pursue this line, to have waited till the end of the year. The Dogs management probably do need the cleaners put thru them, they are far too prone to nepotism. You have the late Bullfrog Moore still ruling the club from the grave. First Chris Anderson (son in law) then Steve Folkes (son in law) now Kelvin Moore (son). They can’t be the best options available as coach.

Well, as a long time Union supporter who watched helplessly while League decimated our player ranks with obscene offers of money year after year after year – all I can say is ….. HOW DOES IT FEEL ? Suck it up League fans. Losing a player to the mighty dollar … how does it feel ? Not gloating …. I just have zero sympathy for you. You did it for years and now the boot is on the other foot. So much for Gallop’s hilarious statement a fortnight ago that League is the premier code because League develops the players before they go to Union. Haw haw haw ! You must be the premier code if they are leaving. Yeah right. How does it feel. I know – it feels sh1t. Well, Union had that for 80 years. Now its your turn.

SJGC, Agree with you 100%. I find it funny when they say players like Ryan Cross cross codes but Ryan Cross actually played rugby union as a kid first before going to league. What did you think of David Gallop asking the IRB to help out? Surely the IRB wants the best players playing the best sport. The only thing I think they have to be careful of is the ‘breach of contract’ issue.
|
|
From AAP “If Sonny Bill were to play overseas, the door would be closed on him returning to the NRL at anytime in the future,” Gallop declared. The NRL chief executive’s stunning call for co-operation from a code which was subject to almost 100 years of rugby league raids on its player ranks comes as some legal advice suggested any attempt at an injunction to prevent Williams breaking his Bulldogs contract may not work.

The NRL needs to wake up and start acting like a professional organisation instead of the half arsed amateur show it is now. The salary cap must go and if you lose some clubs, so be it. Sydney league fans are not supporting half the teams in any decent numbers anyway. Holding on to traditions is very nice but in the real world it isn’t going to work in the long term. In the meantime what good is bringing SBW to court to honour his contract? It will cost the NRL money they haven’t got, and do you think he will come back and play?
|
|
It won’t cost them money as he is not likely to win and hence will most likely have to pay costs. They want to make an example of this one to try and stop players treating contracts like toilet paper They don’t necessarily want him back, thats not the point. We are talking about a very talented athlete – but one who counts Willie mason as a mentor and Choc mundine as a confidant. I’m surprised he doesn’t have chopper read as a manager with that group of advisors. I think if they had an IQ contest between him and a football it would be a close call, but my money would be on the steeden. The NRL does need to decentralise clubs from sydney, but it has been proven in the courts that they can’‘t make them go. The stick hasn’t worked and they have tried the carrot. I think the figure on the table for the first club to go to the central coast is $6million. Thats not a bad carrot. The NRL is probably hoping secretly that a couple fo the sydney clubs do go bottom up financially. I think a 12 or 14 team comp with a full home and away season would be the best alternative.
