My 2 cents. The scrums are a joke, the referees are a joke and the players are over paid prima donnas! Over it!

Why don,t you tell us how you feel:-) Tend to agree with you though, Especially when you are trying to tip results.
A bad day on the golf course is better than no golf at all.

Pom, i honestly don’t know where this game is headed. i get so frustrated with some of the refereeing decisions. cheers sb

I believe a lot has to do with the amount of media exposure the game recieves with nearly every decision being Dissected & examined for flaws over several replays. I have some sympathy for the referees. I have never umpired Rugby League But I used to ref at Hockey matches & it is a thankless job Only made worse by the media coverage. I don,t know if more technology would improve the game or not but something needs to be done as Rugby Union & Football ( soccer ) are quickly closing the gap.

Footy seemed so much better before super league.

Have you seen the NRL ad on telly where the player comes over and washes the mud off his face with water from a tin bucket – they were the days!

is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end. |

nrl is entertaining on an otherwise dull friday night, but outside that i would rather do anything else. i find it too simple. run straight ahead. get tackled, fall down. get up, run straight ahead again. offside, laying over the player, slowing the play the ball, video ref… slows the sh1t right down. i’ll take the afl everyday over the nrl.

yeh would have to agree – nothing like going to a live match and seeing the Bombers perform their skills ;-)

AFL seems to be a bunch of knock on and cheap shots from my perspective . May be ok if you’re actually at the ground but unwatchable on tv. As to NRL players being overpaid prima donnas,

simon, the skills some of these players have today are incredible. unfortunately the standard of refereeing dosen’t match that of the players. bill harrigan was without doubt the best ref of the modern game. i think the video ref is killing the game. cheers sb

afl is still the greatest (after golf). i really think a majority of afl players could make it in league. vice verca? no way.

You wouldn,t be slightly biased by any chance Gribbles??

Im an NRL fan, grew up playing it, but starting to rate the AFL & even Union!

pom, i grew up in north qld, league mad city of townsville. just always appreciated the athleticism in afl as opposed to league. don’t get me wrong, i think there are some stars in league who exhibit phenomenal skills. I can’t name too many fat afl players (except for lance doughboy whitnall) compared to league. anyway, i’m not saying league is crap at all, just that i prefer a game of positioning and finesse as opposed to “today’s league” which is mainly contested with brute force. and having a try scored off a kick or great move on the fifth tackle after 4 straight hit ups up the middle is still only %80 brute force. What’s that? todd carney’s getting sacked for PISSING ON A MEMBER OF THE PUBLIC…. hmmm at least all fev did was piss on a window….

There’s a handful of players in either code who could play both but that’s it. It’ll be a rare day when you see an AFL player make 40 tackles and 20 hit-ups and an NRL player run the equivalent of 10-20km in 2 hrs. They’re different sports with different rules. I think league is tougher but AFL seems to have more injuries. The reffing in the NRL is atrocious. It should only be used in the extreme case, not when the ref can’t be fucked making the call. Scrums are a waste of time unless the halves stop feeding the ball into the second row. The NRL should watch the AFL more closely in how they market their game and handle their players as every year they beat the NRL in crowds at games. Both sports are good to watch when the games are tough and tight. I still prefer NRL though.

|
AFL will always get more crowds as victorians are more passionate about ATTENDING sport than NSWelshmen. we are happy to watch itbut couldn’t be bothered going out to the game I used to be a parramatta supporter as a kid and mum and I would go probably half the games in a season. Back then you had first grade, reserve grade and under 23s so you made a full day of it and got to watch 3 games. much better value than what you currently get. I think they have realised that , hence the toyota cup format this year.

I was referring to the video ref in my rant if anybody noticed.

or they could all following SBW 2 france and really be over paid

I miss the English Premier league footy. Sucks not having Fox Sports yet. :( Can’t be arsed with the overhyped, over commentated crap in NRL and AFL just isn’t a sport, rather an excuse for handbags at 1- paces. Not that the English Premiership isn’t all of those things, just that I’ve had 35 years to desensitise myself to it over there.

12shoc, my issue with watching “football”, is i can’t stand any sport where the score can frequently be 0-0. Its a pity you haven’t had an opp to watch afl live. the atmosphere, even at club games is phenomenal, and you develop a new appreciation for the skills involved when you see what goes on beyond what you can see on television. I honestly hated afl til i went to a live game when i was 12. i’ve been to 2 nrl grand finals (back to back broncos wins) in the 90s, and honestly, they’re not even close to any afl semi, or big regular season game. and although i’ve slandered nrl, yes i watch on fri nght, only bc i don’t have fox and the afl is on too late. in all honesty it can be entertaining, but its the monotony of it i can’t stand

Yeah true about the 0-0 but then I don’t watch many games that are 0-0 as there are a fair few that you can predict – Fulham vs Bolton for example. Yeah I might miss out on a few good games, but I could always catch up via highlights. Between the 2, in the 9 months that I’ve been over here, I have found AFL more enjoyable to watch that NRL but I still can’t get my heart into the game. I suppose it has something to do with the poncy double finger point “score” action by goal umpires. It just looks retarded. At least in NRL they use flags. ;)

the goal umpires in afl use flags too, after the two finger thing :) originally they used the flags so the umpire at the other end could see what the score was.
|
|
True. Funniest thing that I saw a couple of weeks ago was when an umpire dived out of the way of the ball which cross for a goal 20cm from his feet and he signalled for a point rather than a goal. Feckin retarded idiot. ;)

The sad truth is the rest of the world couldn’t give a toss about Rugby League so there will never be enough money injected to keep players. Simple.
