Goodbye, farewell, so long. Thanks for the memories.

Wonder what’s he going to do next apart from finding him on the fairways… ?
If Tiger plays Lefty will he be that good ? |
I rate him as the best wicket keeper batsmen ever as a keeper there have been better..as a batsmen he would have made the side a batsmen alone…47 average at a run a ball hes essentially been our all rounder hes made the right decision though to go on his terms I also think this will fire the team for the next two days and make sure we dont lose and maybe possiblly win this game

A huge void to fill in Australian Cricket.

Will miss those effortless sixes he hits.
Former Top 10 on the PGA Tour ISG Money List. |

Who will walk in the aussie side now?! I’ll miss watching him play cricket. Just the way he carried himself as a cricketer was enough to make him great. No better sight in cricket then seeing Gilly unleash.
100% perfect is a sad neurotic state of mind. Better than
yesterday is saner. - Dart, 2008. |

Great cricketer and lovely bloke. That sitter he dropped in the first innings perhaps made his mind up for him ….
he’s essentially been our all rounder Surely an all rounder needs to bowl??? He was a keeper/batsman in the same ilk but a world better than Dujon, Stewart, Healy ummm…..
I disagree Its always been presumed an all rounder bats and bowls….hes been our all rounder and probably the worlds best all rounder for a few years 17 test centuries and 400 catches…..thats all round enough for me!!

He will be a player kids yet to come will try to emulate. My kids watch(ed) him come out on the field and were just buzzing in anticipation each time. He may not have scored every time but boy he did it his way all the time. Whilst we may be able to replace him as a wickie and as a batsman, it is hard to see a combo of both to fill the role for a few years of the same calibre. Good on ya Gilli and thanks for the magic moments!

Guru, did you happen to see the century Gilly slammed in 57 balls against the Poms in Perth? I think a true testomy to his character and ability is those in the West want to claim him as their own :P
I was in NZ at the time so missed out. 12 years over here of watching him play has been great. Ryan Campbell did a good job as a back up to him as has Luke Ronchi since Ryan retired. Luke is someone who might be the next generation keeper wise. You have to wonder if the selectors will be harder on a keeper who is a bit more hit and miss with the bat or if they will go for gloves first bat second for real this time around.

Dave 1 Enough mate you are talking rubbish. Mark Waugh scored nearly 30 test centuries and took over 100 catches, is he now an all-rounder? C’mon mate keeper/batsmen are not all rounders, simple as that.
Lol…you could have told a fib and said you were there ;-) I’m a keen follower of the domestic cricket, and keep a close eye on how Ronchi perform’s. He’s only young…there’s no doubt he can take an attack apart when it’s his day. I think Gilly’s spoilt us, and we’ll now always want an “all-rounder” as our keeper ;-)

From online Wikipedia…..There is some confusion as to the precise definition that a player needs to fit in order to be considered an all-rounder. The generally accepted criterion is that a genuine all-rounder is someone whose batting or bowling skills, considered alone, would be good enough to win them a place on the team. You can’t be an allrounder if you don’t bowl. It was presumed they batted and bowled because that is what they needed to do to be considered an all rounder, for farks sake mate.

I had the same discussion yesterday. Bowling and wicket-keeping are both specialist positions as is a batsman. A good wickie will take his place in the team as a stand alone position. Whoever wrote Wikipedia’s stuff did not have a thinking cap on past a traditional descriptions of batter and bowl all rounders. Wonder if Tim Z would have qualified as a triple all rounder:)
It is very rare that a keeper who can’t even hold a bat gets in the side. Some are better keeper/batsmen than others but they usually can all bat to some extent. I think the definition is fine.
well I see him as an all rounder because you cant have a cricket side without a wicket keeper…its the same as bowling and batting…the difference being you only need one keeper is the only difference anyway hes great was great will be missed…his world cup feats are unbelievable…. just smashed em
Well if you’re going down that road….you can’t have a team without a keeper…...then he’s even more of a specialist and less an allrounder surely?
usually teams have only one all rounder….. :) we could go on forever :)
Only having one all-rounder doesn’t change the requirements to be considered an all-rounder. Maybe YOU could go on forever but the definition is pretty simple.

A great cricketer, entertainer, but best of all a great bloke.
who was it that said:
If Tiger plays Lefty will he be that good ? |
Don’t care what you call him, I will miss watching him play. It may be some time before we see another weild the willow by the very end quite as well as Gilly. I can’t wait to see the highlight reel…....
It's the only game in the world where you can call penalty on yourself. It's the greatest game there is. |
