ANZ Ladies Masters

Once again women’s golf has shown that it too can provide intriguing finishes. It did so last week and this week at the Ladies Masters it did so again in no uncertain means.

Both Lisa Hall and Shin Hyun Ju are an anachronism in an era where power hitting rules the day especially on a golf course like Royal Pines that has typically lent itself to the bombers.

They showed however that by great craftsmanship and clever strategy, the accurate, percentage player can sometimes outdo the big hitter.

More especially Shin was brilliant. When I went to watch her play the final few holes in round one late on Friday as it became apparent that she could challenge Garret’s then first day lead at that point, it seemed likely that she would struggle in the latter stages of the event.

She averaged around 210 yards on the holes where measurements were taken and was seen to hit 4 irons where Webb and the like were hitting wedges.

On the par threes on Sunday she hit utlilty woods on each where for example on the 5th I can’t imagine Webb would have been going in with much more than a 6 iron.

To her credit not only did she match the longer hittters in scoring she actually bettered them and for mine it was one of the great studies of how David can someitnes beat Goliath on the golf course.

There was little surprise therefore that when I walked into the press centre before others had arrived to interview Shin she was sitting quietly with friends with a few tears rolling down her cheeks and understandably so. She had played her heart out, playing within her limitations and had beaten her playing partners Webb and Durdin at their own game.

The emotions which had been so beautifully kept in check for so long finally came to the surface but she bravely faced the press just ten minutes after missing that short putt. Make no mistake Shin is a class act on and off the golf course

Personally I thought the fact that Shin and for that matter Hall were able to finish one and two on that golf course was the most intriguing aspect of the week

Said no better: a class act
Lisa too showed her gutsiness in the closing stages

Still thot it should have been a play off…for the title

It is really one of those things that probably Non golfers or players wont understand, missing a pressure putt on the last….it happens,
and it’s actually pretty disturbing to all of us who loves this silly game witnessing it …there is this unspoken empathy in all golfers whether we care to admit it or not

If Tiger plays Lefty will he be that good ?
You sure Square is Good ? Don't Think So !
