I thought, given that the Open Championship is at Carnoustie this year, it would be appropriate to dig up this interview I did with Jack Newton in 2001. Newton was beaten in a playoff in 1975 by Tom Watson Hopefully you will like the interview where Jack discusses his 1975 near miss at Carnoustie and a range of other interesting issues. There are two parts to this interview. http://www.iseekgolf.com/in...=jack%20newton

Jeffrey I have not heard as such of late but I would imagine that the R&A wouldn't dare stuff up such a great golf course again as they did in 1999. I understand that Peter Dawson has made it his task to enure that the course doesn't get away on them this time and has told the supertintendent at Carnoustie such but God knows why they would blame the green staff at Carnoustie for the 99 debacle when it is only an hour or so's drive from the home of the R&A. They stuffed up in 99 no question but have indicated there will be no repeat. After all it is their championship. In 1999 it was either fairway or knee high rough and longer but they will grade the rough this time I believe. Carnoustie is a great test without all that crap and as Jack and I discussed in that chat the breeze on the final day in 1975 was not strong but was there which it had not been for the first three days and on the final day only three players broke par without all the long rough etc. They will never get a repeat of those great conditions (1975) again over four days and don't need to dress the course up too much at all to challenge this field. 69'r I'll mention to Maz that you referred to her as old Maz

Just tell her to glance at the date on the drivers license if she needs reminding.

She's often been surprised at the age on your license too

Once again good stuff, great to listen to a bloke telling it like it is and not sugar coating answers and taking it 'one week at a time' Maybe I'll have to track the book down as I'm yet to read it.
