L-Shaped green

If you are

on

an L-shaped green, (the part where the hole isn't!), and between you and the hole is a bunker meaning you have no direct putt; are you allowed to chip using a wedge/lobbie etc ... ??????????????

We had this scenario the other day and I thought you could whereas my pal thought not as it would result in damaging the green!

What's the answer?

PS:- I'm sure I once saw John Daly do this very thing in a British Open.

I realise that I'm not Bruce ... but I believe that you can use any club you like on the green - and you can take as big a divot as you want !!!! (i.e. its not against the rules !!!)

You can take as bigger divot as you like but bewere the greenkepers might have a go at you. smile.gif

Hi NADG 63

Yes the guys are right there is no law against it. Beware of the chunk into the bunker from the tight lie however. biggrin.gif

It is frowned upon if not necessary but every now and again you will get that situation.

Yeah, if it were me I'd be using a nice wide-soled club and a very shallow swing. laugh.gif

A good example is the 17th at The Blue Canyon in Phuket,Tiger chipped on the green when he landed on the wrong side of the green. Last time I played there a local rule stopped players doing the same.

Little off topic I know but very much in the same vein. Say you are in a similar position but can putt the ball off the green to roll it back towards the pin... are you allowed to leave the pin in seeing it is coming back onto the green from off of it???

No, it depends on the lie not the route.

If you make something idiot proof someone will design a better idiot.

More detailed answer - you are playing a stroke from on the putting green, so any shot played from there will incur a penalty under R17-3 if it strikes the flagstick.

Note there is no distinction about what club is used, because the rules says "a stroke", be it with a putter or driver...
