Which Golf Ball?

Hi,

I didnt know if this should be posted in equipment or not, however, im a relatively new golfer, only been playing less than a year but already shooting low 90s , high 80s. My question is, which golf ball should i be using? Im not the ordinary golfer, I can hit driver 260 on the fly so about 280+ meters, i hit my 8 iron 150-155meters. I dont have a clue which golf ball to use, either way i need one that will suite me but be relatively cheap under $50 a dozen? Lately ive just been using B grade pro v1s. (Because of the price) Any recommendations???

Hi Reactor - Welcome to ISG.

This has been covered many times and always falls into the "how long is a piece of string" section.

Because it really all depends.

I play off 13 (not to 13 mind you). And use a Pro V1 90% of the time off the 1st. My course has water in play on 14 of the 18 holes so I rarely finish with the ProV1. If I lose one I swap to an older cheaper ball that I have lots of, and doesn't cost $5. Off the tee and with irons I don't really notice a difference to be honest. However with anything under a full shot with the wedge, or chipping or putting. I notice quite a large difference.

Particularly with pitches around the green. With the ProV1 I can chip, skip and stop them pretty easily. but with the cheaper harder balls I can't and often overshoot my target.

Some balls are definitely longer than others, some feel better for putting, some wear better and some are cheaper. All factors and different for different people.

I play the ProV1 because of wear primarily. I can get two rounds out of one easily (when I don't lose them in the water of course). Secondly I use them because of feel around the green (as mentioned) and feel with putting. I also travel a lot so I but them cheaply in the US as opposed to retail here in Aus.

Have a search (Top right corner next to "Help") and look for "Ball" threads and you will find heaps of opinions discussing all the points I mentioned.

btw... 280m drive and 155m 8iron are pretty good. I don't think you have a distance issue.

I would stick to the B grade Pro V1s if your getting reasonable distance out of them!!!

Thanks heaps PJ, I have alot of pro v1s from my brother who moved away, however, they are probably B grade balls, whats the deal with playing second hand balls compared to new balls? (even if they are Pro v1s?)

By the way, your in the same boat as me, im a member at the colonial on the gold coast, theres something like 14 or 15 holes which have water, it sucks even gun players lose balls at my course.

I read a review (or saw it on TV???) about ball quality and performance.

Having a scuffed surface definitely impacts a balls performance. Having dirt or grass on it, impacts it even more.

however, being a B Grade ball generally means it's seen a few holes not to much worse.

I would think that for mortals like us a B Grade ball will play well enough.

Be aware that some can be out of shape, and this will make it useless.

did sven say HX hot again laugh.gif ...hx hot 3 piece distance ball that doesnt feel like a rock thats stops around the greeen...they are great, but I already said that didnt I...?? laugh.gif

Buy the best ball you can afford. But consider if you want spin or distance. It'll mean the difference between say for example, Pro V1 and Pro V 1x etc.

with such driving distance, forget the HX hot you dont need it. I suggest you need a ProVx or HX tour to maximise your distance even more. Low compression and low spin,

I know this has been pointed out many many times to others in other threads but I doubt your assumptions on distance are correct. 280 meters converted to yards is 306.21

You say you have been playing only 1 year but these are your driver distances, this would place you 4th on the PGA Driving Distance list for this year and 7th overall last year, marginally behind Tiger Woods.

Now I'm not calling you a lair, I just think what you believe to be true and what is actually a fact may be slightly different.

Have fun with the game though!

Ok then either the machine is lieing or the markers at every golf course i play are incorrect...

Im 201 cm tall... plus i wiegh over 100kg, do the math smile.gif My swing arc is abnormally large... My clubs are 2" longer plus lie is 3 up. I dont have any reason to lie... Ive played cricket all my life at a high level so you could say im a natural striker of the ball aswell

he 5 putts at every green...

If your trying to have a go at me for why I can hit that far but still have a handicap of 19, ive only been playing for 8 months. I shot an 82 the other day in the comp... smile.gif even after shooting 12 under my handicap, my handicap only went down by 3. I havent played in that many comps, it would be nice once in a while if people could just answer questions without having a go or questioning peoples motives ! tongue.gif

Mate, I'm not having a go. I just think your distances are out. I ahve no doubt you can hit it miles, I just doubt after a year that you hit it as far as you say you do. Maybe your best drive, but not 80% of them.

Don't get defensive, turn up at an ISG Day and show us your wares!

6foot, 100 kilos and Cricket mean nothing to me, I was just comparing your distances to the elite players in the world and somehow I doubt a 15/19 handicapper is in the same league and hits it a comparable distance to the number 1 player in the world. Do you get my drift?

I love a good Turkey (read : New Guy) shoot

I only post here when the other site gets quiet...

6foot

judge, if you think that 201cm is 6 foot, how the hell did you ever get a woman from RSVP to meet you? Because by my calculations you would have been telling them that you're 4 foot nothing.

Uppy, I was guesing he was using the same tape to measure himself as his drives...

And I am 4 foot nothing...

It’s good that you buy the ball of choice according to price, as there is little difference in the performance of the top grade balls across the market. But there can be a huge difference in price. I use Maxfli Noodles. You can pick them up for $20/dozen some times.

There’s a thread somwhere promulgating the Excellence of Precept Laddie X (Extreme)

You will not be disappointed with Titleist NXT Tour. Very good all round ball and cost effective at around $45 per Dozen.

The precept xtreme that I bought off ebay are okay – good around the green chip and putting – back spin is there – the driver seems shorter even though they are a harder ball – I think!
