Overswinging

I have been told that I have a massive overswing and I almost wrap the club right around my body. If I connect well I hit the ball straight and send it a mile but the majority of times I toe the ball sending it off to the right. I’ve tried to shorten my swing but find it difficult and usually stuff the shot. I’ve been told that I release my grip at the top of the swing too. Are there any drills I can do to prevent overswing?

My wife had a massive over swing. Her Gary Edwin teacher (Richard Slade) fixed it permanently in just one lesson by correcting her set up and turn. Her swing is now poetry in motion not unlike that of Rod Pampling and Brad Lamb.

Welcome MargY’. Many golfers of all ages and both sexes think that a longer swing just has to be more powerful than a shorter one. One reason is that on TV everyone is belting it a mile with a big swing – perception of what is going on. Also if we make a big enough swing then Centrifugal Force ( whirling a ball on the end of a string) will pull many bits of a golf swing together if we let them. So longer again seems better. However if we tinker with trying to add power to the string, eerrr clubshaft during a swing it often will disrupt the orbit of the head and splat we have a duff in play. So, we need to get a good clear idea of what needs to go on in a swing rather than the blurred perception of what we grasp from the TV screen. Head into the Golf School area and read from Fix Your Swing and you will hopefully get your head around the plan.
