Hey Guys,

Great site here, really impressed w/ the online
instruction help. Im just getting emersed in TGM after hangin out at Lynn’s site, great stuff over their too.

Im rebuilding my swing TGM style and like the simple patterns of Brian Gay and Stuart Appleby.
Ive been down the Hardy/rotary path and while I see how just letting the arms be flung by the turning torso can create power, I just havent been able to make that pattern work. Im 45 and pretty athletic, but I want a swing that will age well, with decent distance.

Tried S&T and have the new video, but again, I just seem to have trouble not jumping up enough at the right time, misses are fat and pushes.

Ive taken a lesson from Brian Manzella, have the flipper video, but he his not crazy about the rt. forearm take away. I have been the most consistent w/ the on plane rt forearm at set up.

Would you guys say that for someonewho started late (40) and have wading through the instructional wasteland, for 5 years would be wise to copy an Appleby/Gay pattern? Or is someone like Croker a better option. Also should I get the yellow book?

Thanks in advance for any input….

Welcome aboard Coltsfan, you will enjoy the site.

Where to begin? I guess there are two things I would suggest.

1) Read the thread entitled “Lets talk about G.O.L.F.” – the user LagPressure is an ex touring pro who has posted some of the best stuff you will ever read.

2) Check out the Golf School from the main thread. Start with “Fix your swing pt 1” and work your way through them all.

The yellow book is not something you should buy unless you have the patience to really study it, it is the complete opposite of a quick fix!

in a good way because we all know quick fixes don’t work!

Welcome Coltsfan!

You’ve found a great place to learn and share here..!

Hi Coltsfan,

No reason to change your style, just do every thing you can as usual.

All you need to know is right here a hundred different ways but the book puts you in control. There is enough in the first chapter to make your golfing life blossom.

Forget any pattern but yours. You need the clubhead feel and the alignments.

keep it simple and if anyone tries to make you conform to an image that is not yours stop seeing and listening to them…

If someone tells you you are a swinger and then proceeds to try and make you a hitter ... run Quickly...

CraigaW,

That is what I reckon too.

The pattern he has now at least is familiar – it just needs more precision.

There will be a poor concept or two to discover but that will show up hunting down better alignments.

Most people think there is a lot to do. Change every thing and get this swing right, then I will be a good golfer.

Most of what is needed can be achieved with a sensitive touch and a smooth Hinge Motion.

I have just come out the other side of that Dart :)

Now i have returned to my natural ultra late snap release instead of trying to sweep and everything in between and have found happiness again..

Hey ColtsFan, you wouldn’t be from Indy would ya?

As far as I'm concerned, too much golf is just barely enough!

hey guys,

thanks for your responses. I was away for a along labor Day weekend. I appreciate your input, and am looking forward to all the info I can resource from you guys.

Dart, when you say first chapter, is that actually chapter one? Ive heard they want you to read the book in a different fashion than most. (ie. read chapter 6 then 3 then 10) Im getting the book this week, do you reccomend going directly through TGM to get the latest issue?

Jack, yes Im from Indy. Are you close by?

Have a great week, and thanks again for the welcome…..

Coltsfan,

Chap. 1 is the first reading recommended. Page VII in the introduction will get you to break 80 if you can master it ( FLW and making a motion ).

My point is that there is not much in TGM that are not variations on themes.

I L depicts the machine concept that you set up each time you touch a club. The unemotional execution of a procedure.

When I argued that all people are emotionally operating at some level, Greg McHatton said yes but the Laws of Physics and Geometry don’t.

For some reason, I liked that.

Colts,
No I don’t live in Indy but I have an office on 87th near I69. I visit Indy about once a year. Have played a couple of golf courses there, one in particular I remember was called Purgatory. It certainly lived up to its name.

Where do you normally play?

Dart, will do… Im not sure if Apples is a hitter or swinger, but in just horsing around w/ what I gathered from Ted Fort’s pattern on Lynns site, I like the simplicity of the hitters motion. I probably will have to get a driver w/ more loft (9.5 now) I seem to able to bring my right shoulder and forearn down plane easier w/ a pushing or rt forearm thrust than w/ a left side pull, which always seems to throw the rt shoulder across the line. Love your TGM short video on Peter’s site btw, very concise and helpful.

Cant wait to get the book, and also check the threads Styles recommended.

Jack, yes Pergatory is a bear, I mean brutal. I like Bear Slide and Trophy Club. Check those out the next time your in town. The Fort, is totally awesome course for the money and close to your office on the NE side.

GO COLTS (sorry, had to throw that in)

Colts, thanks for tips on the local courses. I have heard good reports about The Fort but thought it was a private course. Is it public?

I wouldn’t mind seeing the Colts play but I believe tickets are like hens teeth.

Jack,

The Fort is public and the rates get more attractive in the fall. Lots color w/ the trees as well.

The Colts ticket is tough to come by, BUT scalping is legal in Indy so if you go down there near kick off you can get a ticket. Hopefully the roof will be open for you :)

Coltsfan,

Don’t worry about apples too much, he can do anything. Swing when he is cool and hit under pressure, they all can. Hitting is simple but so is swinging if you know how. The point is to do what you like when you like. There are no must do’s – anywhere.

Glad you liked the lessons, we had a really good director and camera crew. They made us ad lib because we couldn’t memorise a script.

Guru and I can do more.

I’ve got damn Jim Nabors singing the Indiana song now stuck in my head….

Steb,
youre cracking me up man, yea Ive heard that song a few times too….

Its pretty cool knowing that afters Gomer’s song, those 33 cars are just minutes away from lasting by you at 230.

Dart,

I gotcha on the hitting/swinging thing. Manzella (Doyle trained) was teaching me swinging, basically “catching the drop” from the top w/ your pivot. the whole “fiddle drill” thing” love the effortless power when I conect, but tricky to do consistantly.

After reading some of Lag’s posts it seems like hitting is more consistant. I also heard you prefer this pattern as well ….
