Hitting Help

hi there

been toying with changing to hitting (from swinging) after a long break from golf, as the swing style gives me a more controlled ‘feel’ to the shots

have been practicing it without balls for the last week or two, got to the range tonight and had mixed results. my short irons worked wonderfully up to 3/4 swings and the long ones were ok to around a 1/3 swing

but once i tried to climb above this level everything went off, and even with the short irons a true full swing was a little inconsistent

obviously first time out its to be expected, but the long irons just felt a little clumsy, like im not sure this feeling would go away just with practice

anyone had the same experience trying hitting, and if so any tips to get past it?

i would like to continue because my 1/2 and 3/4 swings with short irons were fire

I think you are ahead of normal. Keep it up for a couple of weeks and the rest of your life. You will never stop learning and having fun. Experience it all and enjoy the exhilaration.

cheers dart

i do really ‘enjoy’ the hitting feeling. the more information i get out of my back hand, compared to the controlled chaos of swinging is a great thing

will keep at it for sure

Soulman, learn it the dart way and you will probably never go back to swinging, keeping that in mind ,keep in touch with swinging, being armed with a sound knowledge of both is a great way to play golf.
Just a couple of things that I might add is,dont go too far back(about shoulder height )and concentrate on thrust not speed, and keep downswing a linear motion,ps,I m just a student of golf not a teacher,Dart will tell it true…...Good hitting

Brownman, most of that advice fits in but what about that last one?

From the advice I’ve seen, the idea is to hit ‘down and out’ – it’s an inside out swing – and never try to guide the club down the line.

down and out, in simple terms drive the right arm straight, and straighten through impact

Yep

i saw that too but i kinda took it as a linear ‘vertical’ type path rather than a linear vs plane thing

as in the push feels more direct than the swing, like bio said

After seeing your reply,it wont take you long.the 2 main bones in your arms are radius and ulna, drive them into impact, ensure that lever alighnments are in right place(Ill let the teachers take over now)

Hitting is a nice thing to do. So is swinging. They make playing golf the most wonderful thing.

Just make sure you maintain the lag, then you will be forced to learn your on plane hinge action.

Remember, glass ( plane ), pressure gauge and get that hinge mounted in the right spot with no rust.
