Discussion for Maximise Your Woods From The Fairway

Interesting read, thank you ISG. I’m currently hunting for a 3-wood for my bag, and will definitely be looking for a club that produces a low ball flight, as my swing currently produces some shots so high the ball has ice on it on the way down… Does anyone have any suggestions on 3-woods that have a lower trajectory? Thanks in advance, Bunny.

Bunny, sounds like you may show a bit more loft to the ball than is stamped on the bottom of the head. ie a scoop motion happening especially off the tee? In any case you may not wish to find a low COG head, so try deeper faced woods that do not have such a deep face to back look, ie something stumpier looking. Do go hit them before parting with hard earned cash.

i am amazed at the actual performance numbers at the end , showing a faster swing with the 5w and greatest distant with the highest lofted 5 wood. certainly makes me think… maybe my old man and i should do some tests with his weapons.. as i’m sure he hits a 6 iron same as his driver and 5 wood (he is 82). thanks for the insight

Those figures were not unusual for senior golfers or beginner level ones for that matter.

You forget to post that you are a chopper and 80 is a good score?

Its pathetic isn’t it. I just don’t get it – what is it about the internet that creates all these angry young men? *sorry for going off topic.

If you read Nevil’s first post, it would seem to indicate that he works in club pro-shop. Maybe he’s just blowing off some steam, but mouthing off anonymously is not a good look. Bunny, are you talking about tee shots? Most people I see hitting 3 wood off the deck have the opposite problem – hitting little worm burners, or cut shots. If you are talking about tee-shots it might be worth checking where you are making contact with the ball. If you get a marker pen and draw an X on the back of the ball, you get a nice imprint on the clubface. Saves you having to get those impact stickers etc…
Reverse every natural instinct you have and do just the opposite of what you are inclined to do and you will probably come very close to having a perfect golf swing. - BEN HOGAN, POWER GOLF |

Great Article
If Tiger plays Lefty will he be that good ? |

I asked a pro once why I could hit my 3 wood as afar off the tee as my driver and he advised me that it is because players don’t tend to swing the 3 as hard as the driver. Could this then translate also to why the 5 wood could go as far as the 3 wood? How do hybrids come into play with this? I have actually replaced my 5 wood and 3 iron in my bag with a 3 hybrid, is this perhaps a bad idea?

Welcome kimwilly to the forum. Your pro was describing the red mist that seems to descend upon many of us when the ball it teed up high and the long stick is looking down the long fairway. Many do try to overpower and it kills a good swing. If your swing speed is low then there comes a point where lower lofted clubs just are not going to stay in the air long enough to make them worth carrying. The next article I am doing is looking at long irons and hybrids. My view is use whatever works best for you and your swing. It may be unconventional. It may be boring. Whatever it is as long as you know that it works then thats just fine.

Im relatively new to the golf scene, and some people may scoff but it’s my 4th year playing, so some golf things are not quite obvious to me here.
