I’m really interested to know what the best tip or piece of advice/wisdom you’ve ever been given. There must be some real gems out there that we could all benefit from.

Nice topic AlexS The best tip I got was from my old man. He told me to line up my drive as usual then drop my right foot back about 1 inch. This aparently restricts the backswing and decreases tentancy of hitting inside out (or outside in???). I did this and to my amazement worked a treat. As a result I have now won 2 longest drives (in C grade) and spend most of my time on the fairway instead of in the trees. Very simplistic and there is obviously much more to it than the stance but it worked for me. Waz

Best tip? Go see a pro!

“Keep your head down!” LOL kidding… I like Whitednj’s advice.
1-L, it is all there my friend. |
“Chip becomes Pitch becomes Half shot becomes 3/4 shot becomes full shot!” Helped my ball striking no end and has given me a repetoire of shots for different situations both in terms of pressure and obstacles on the course. Amazing how you can regain your swing working within this protocol when this go awry!! Educated hands and impact perfection would be the secret to my recent improvement beyond a level I considered possible. There are no limits now.
Feel it, execute it, live with it. |

AB thats reality vs a tip for you:)
Should be “Go see a good pro”. Most of them are rubbish.
Probably true guru. Would a tip be classed as a bandaid? Not really one for quick fixes, prefer long term solutions and improvement remedies! ;)
Feel it, execute it, live with it. |
Exactly:) I class a tip as “Incomplete info’ that could be useful if the underlaying basis was given so that it can be fully understood to work in the circumstance being examined. Helpfully meant but usually more destructive without the context in total.
These tips are quite fundamental so, as in the golf magazines, the context is general ( the thread was about the best tip YOU have had)

“Make your next shot the best one you hit all day”

one good tip I received was from a pro in a pro am – he said continue to look at the tee after you hit the ball – meaning don’t chase the ball with your eyes or similar.
Political Correctness is doctrine fostered by a delusional
minority and by the media, which holds forth the proposition it
is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end. |

Never heard of a good tip. All of the tips I’ve heard of or been personally given on the range and playing have been garbage. They flood your mind and ruin any ability to strike the ball well. The best tip I’ve received was the the one I gave to myself to improve my driving. Focus on a spot behind the ball. Although the best one I’ve received online was from Dart, when he advised to completely uncock through impact to prevent throwaway. Works in a pinch. I plan to work on a another self-tip this week and see if it works this weekend. Know thyself.

Work towards gradual improvement not instant perfection. Plan your work and work your plan. There are millions of them. My best tip is; decide to do something then do it. Nike will pinch that for sure.
Sensational advice Darty. F__k Nike, Im gonna steal that one! hahaha… What is it… The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little bit extra! I also like to believe in being only bounded by the limitations you place on yourself… Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you are probably right!
Feel it, execute it, live with it. |
I like that too Tim ;-)

Very true Guru! There are no shortcuts, only knowledge, application and patience. Anything worthwhile takes time.

Paint a picture for your subconscious mind, a positive one that you want to come true, as pictures do not carry a negative connotation, then distract the conscious mind somehow so it doesn’t interfere. And secondarily, don’t let anyone else paint your picture for you by saying something like “I don’t want to go in that water.” You have to start all over when that happens and paint your own positive picture. That way lies “the zone”.

‘just play your own game’
If Tiger plays Lefty will he be that good ? |
This is exactly what my pro is trying to get out of my game. I started “staying down” when I was learning to hit my new hybrids (couldn’t work out whether they were irons or woods so treated them like hockey sticks) and this permeated my whole game – good for putting only. So now I’m working on better shoulder turn through the whole swing and this means watching the ball in flight. Gotta trust that swing! (is that a tip?)
Whitednj Went to the same pro as you ( Mark at the Willows) when I was back in Aus in April and he got me to do the same thing and it’s working like a treat. I watch impact and then follow the ball..and thus have a full turn…great stuff. Your first tip was the best… get lessons from a pro and no doubt that Mark is one of the best teachers.

Here’s a classic quote from a very famous teacher from the 1930’s-1950’s earer. I think of it every day.

AlexS, I’m not stalking you I promise but bizarrely I just got this book delivered yesterday. I’ve had a quick look through it, going straight to the section on down n out. It truly is brilliant.

Hey, maybe it’s a sign or something. (ha Ha!) It’s nice to meet people who are obsessive about their golf improvement. I am always telling people to respect and understand obsession. I have this feeling that we play golf together one day, who knows. It’s incredible to think this P.Boomer book was written nearly 80 yrs ago! He’s my hero. My number 2 book (which is probably a much better book really) is Michael Hebron’s “Golf Swing Secrets and Lies”. This book will blow your mind.
Not heard of that one by Hebron but have been hoping to get a reasonably priced copy of “Golf Body, Golf Swing, Golf Mind” since November. Its an expensive book though and have not found it on any sites except the US amazon
