The perfect Grip

What is the ideal grip position? I feel more comfortable with a strong grip with the V formed between right thumb and index finger pointing pretty much up my right arm.

As I have just started my pro has tried to get me to go to a more neutral grip but my squash and tennis background keeps me wanting to return to my comfortable strong grip.

Last question, should the right thumb and right index finger be touching?

I started using the Vardon grip in 1972, the classic Vardon has both thumb Vs pointing at the right shoulder. Looking at the left hand from your address you should be able to see the first two knuckles on the left hand. I figure if it was good enough for old Harry, it’s good enough for me.

The thumb should be touching the pointer finger on the right hand, and everything should be nice and relaxed… avoid the classic pistol grip with the right pointer.

“Grip” is really a misnomer, you don’t grip the club it should be held like a woman, gently and with a nice soothing caress….if you grip, then the muscles in your arms will be stressed, leading to problems.

ahhh "consistency" the holy grail of golf....

I know im completely wrong, but im from a cricketing background and i just cant come to terms with any other grip then the baseball/cricket grip, anything else seems uncomfortable. But saying that my grip is working for me so im not going to change it.

Mixjah,

Don’t sell yourself short, I use exactly the same 10 finger grip as you do! I come from a baseball background and truly can’t see an advantage to not having all the fingers on the grip. I am a competitive long driver and it works for me also – stay with it I say!

Gotta,

I think a grip is a very personal choice I would say I have a very unorthodox grip in golfing terms. I hold the club so that it sits across the second knuckle of both hands, 10 finger grip, with all the second knuckles lining up on the underside of the grip – this a very baseball style grip and I am tipping a golf teacher will have a fit when they see it. I generate high clubhead speed and hit the ball long and fairly straight.

I do agree with cliff though, very light pressure, relaxed muscles are fast muscles!

Hey cliff what if you like to use a tight grip on a woman though? :P haha…

Feel it, execute it, live with it.

3 bad shots and 1 good shot is still a 4….
Golf is played in a very small area, the 6 inches between your ears…

One swing to hit the ball,
one swing to find a score,
One swing you bring to all,
And on the fairway find them.

Hahahaha love that post. And for AB, as Golfers we hate it(the) rough, but as lovers…

100% perfect is a sad neurotic state of mind. Better than yesterday is saner. - Dart, 2008.
