Do we swing the Driver like an iron?

Hey guys, I guess you are getting by now that my driver is giving trouble at the moment. My question is when you swing the driver, is it the same as your swing with the iron, I find I take a bit of a divot (not as big as with the iron, but gets rid of some turf all the same) with my driver, just forward of where I would play an iron shot. My short game, and long game (with the exception of tee shots) are absolutely killing it right now and its that damn 1w and 3w (formerly named the fairway splitter) off the tees that are giving me trouble and holding my scoring back. I can’t seem to not take a divot with the driver in what feels like a natural swing and since i don’t see many others taking divots when the hit good drives, I was wondering if my approach to hitting my driver is a little off. O yea, theres a massive slice to add into my driver and 3w woes.. Irons go dead straight with an occasional lil fade tendency at the end. Cheers, Mr C.

MrC, c’mon dude! Same swing every time! The only part of you that knows you’re holding a different club is your head! Next time you’re practicing, alternate between 7-irons and drivers. You’ll get it.

The swings are very much the same and vary only in length and strength. Divots with a Driver, however, would be “air divots”, taken whilst the club head is moving down plane to low point. With an iron, low point is in the ground, hence the need to “shift sod to get down there” as our transatlantic cousins might say. With fairway woods you still need to take a divot, but not “shift sod” as such; just bruise the grass a bit – hit the white before the green. You might like to have a practise session devoted just to hitting your Driver off the turf in order to reinforce the downward aspect of impact. Once you learn to hit the Driver off the carpet, you will be a G.O.L.Fer my son.

Treat the driver the same as your girlfriend. Get a new one, it wasn’t true love anyway. Get one that works the same as your irons for Christmas.

Top idea. After ‘swinging’ with another driver, she never treated me the same.. :) thanks all, and merry xmas.

Not sure my wife agrees at all with this theory.

Just joking. If the girlfriend isn’t working she needs a lot more tender loving care but that won’t be successful with the wrong driver.

Just smash it? (in the fairway), rip it back on a green, sink a putt and move on to the next hole?
You are kidding yourself if you think you can make it without hard-work. |

My question is when you swing the driver, is it the same as your swing with the iron Think about this; Iron Byron test both irons and woods. This should answer your question. The only difference in the two is ball position.

My question is when you swing the driver, is it the same as your swing with the iron hmm that is so true. Ok that might have been what I was after.

MrC: Your answer was in Fix Your Swing Part 1, the first ever article in the Golf School. “Proceed to School without passing Go and collecting your money” :) Sometimes the good stuff is just right in front of you but the grey matter has forgotten what it has read. OK back to the Xmas e-mails:) Have a good time all!

Check outthis months US golf digest section on breaking 100/90/80/and 70..Bobby Clampett has put together a great piece on impact and part of it is on the downward blow that you should have with the driver.. He is a devout TGM er BTW..

Hmm I think i’ll have some re-reading to do :) And scoop, i’ll be sure to check that article out. P.s. Best advice i ever got on how to score lower, was to play a par 64 track rather than a 72 :) theres 8 right there!
