Straight Back, Bum Out

When I look at snaps of professional’s alignment in golf mags and instructional websites, they all have a straight back (no hunch at the shoulders) and their bums are sticking out a bit.

i thought i was pretty straight, but i caught a reflection of my stance in the glass at the range yesterday and found i was slightly hunched and my butt was tucked in as if i was just standing normally.

so i straighted up and stuck out my arse and hit the ball much straighter, making more pure contact and not hitting it fat…

the problem was, standing like this was much more physically draining than my usual set-up. obviously it will take some time to get used to it, but is that what I should be aiming for?

the reason i ask, is that I was always told that comfort and relaxation are paramount and anything that doesn’t feel right is unlikely to help in the longer term.

advise, comments appreciated…

wedge.

I think the why is because the straight spine allows for a straighter turn from hips to shoulders. If there’s a curve there, it’ll create problems in keeping the shoulders on plane.

As to how… I’ve been doing core strength exercises since deciding to work on my golf swing. Helps heaps. Crunches, bridges, push-ups, etc strong abs take some of the load off your back muscles and make the swing a lot less draining.

Nice observations wedge, PoMo…. Wedge how did you establish the spine bend. was it by leaning over the ball or pushing your bum out?

yep, the spine bend was from leaning over…

by straightening up, it also allows my head to get out of the way, it felt sometimes like i was too close to the ball and hence hit it fat

core strength exercises! might stay up late and by an “ab-ersize” or “crunch-magic-machine”...lol

I am FAR from an expert in these things, but I wouldn’t bother with the gadgets. Just learn the right technique and use your body’s own weight (I have plenty of that).

Head usually weighs about what your butt does. So tilt forward with the head means the butt needs to go back a tad. This butt shift also allows for more room for the right elbow to pass the right hip. You will not feel cramped for hand space.

Its something my golf coach said also, its the first thing he changed, it might feel uncomfortabel at first but you get used to it, That said I still struggle with my driver to stand that way.

I feel and like I said feel spine tilt is more important when driving than that classic butt out position, its probably important to do both but I cant seem to with driver in hand.

so John (Daly) how did you make a 14?....well i missed the putt ior a 13 dickhead

I would guess Dave that when you take to your driver that you reach your hands out a little further from your body? Most people do. If so that is your way of gaining the room to swing. If you are hitting them sweet then thats cool. If you are fighting your driver then the way forward is a stable position to swing from with room at speed.

I grip down a little on the driver. Probably should just get it reshafted with 44 inch shaft maybe

I’m not super long off the tee. hit a fade about 210-220. Try to make pars by hitting hybrids and 6 irons into most greens depending on the wind.

I find with the bum out position its hard to generate decent club head speed

Your balance point should be front of your heels. If with your butt out its at the back of your heels then that is too far OR it causes you to tilt too far forward. Happy medium wins for a solid base to max out.
