Club Fitting

I've decided to part with some hard earned cash and I'm buying myself a new set if Mizuno MP-32's. biggrin.gif

Booked in for a fitting session tomorrow afternoon and as a novice on the Club Fitting side of things, was after some advice.

I know providing the guy I'm going to see is good at his job, I'll be O.K. (the fact Mizuno use this club as an official fitting centre makes me think they must be pretty good) BUT what are the most important aspects of fitting.

I know nothing about shafts etc. and would like to go in there with some idea of what I should be looking for and why.

Hope this questions isn't too stupid but If I'm going to spend hundreds of pounds I want to know that I've done all I can to ensure the best fit possible.

Thanks.

What do you need these new clubs to do for you? Hit it higher, longer, straighter etc. Only you know those answers. If he is a good fitter then you will end up with tools that will help rather than hinder.

Rule of Thumb - we want to play with the lightest most flexible clubs we can control. For some that may be XXX steels:)

Get grips that are comfortable, not the stock stuff.

And try and try before you buy! Get them to make up a 5i in your supposed specs before handing over the GBPs.

Thanks Paul.

I want clubs that have some 'feel' to them. Using my Cally X16's and although they are great to hit and decent enough I struggle to work them, both in terms of fade / draw and high / low.

I've always had a high ball flight, and the Callys exacabate that somewhat, so am looking forward to being able to control Ball Flight better than I'm currently able to. (member of a windy course, so thats a must for me and I guess the most important thing)

When I was there for the demo day, they did say that they will grip the new clubs with any grip that I choose for no extra cost, is part of the deal. (They had all the main / normnal grips to choose from)

Thanks again for the advice. I let you know how it goes later.

What sort of scores you shooting these days Russino and what sort of distance (honestly) do you hit a 7 iron?

Those are a pretty tasty set of irons and not really the most forgiving. My scratch mate leaves his sitting in the garage whilst he continues to play his old MP-30's. On a wet, windy day from a crap lie the Mp-32 isn't going to be anything like as easy to hit as your Callaways IMO.

You're obviously working hard at this whole thing and I'd be wary of spending such a lot on new clubs that may not be right for you in a year or so. For example a year ago regular shafts were fine for me but now I need stiff ones.

How long do you intend to bash these ones for?

Found this on the net last week. It's a video tutorial on clubfitting, all the ins and outs. smile.gif

Hennry Griffiths should not be talking about correctly fitted clubs. They are the WORST fitted clubs (and fitting system) on the market.

Hi Scratch. Well. It's too late now !!! Just got back from the fitting and have ordered them !!

I've been Scoring in the low 80's (79 in club champ on Sunday !! biggrin.gif ) for past 6 weeks or so and my 7 iron is a comfortable 155 -160 yards.

I did demo these clubs at least 4 times (Hitting 50 balls min. each time) and can honestly say that I didn't experiance any problems. Yes of course I did hit a few thin and fat but overal feeling was amazing.

I was fitted with Stiff Shafts (swing speed ave. was 98mph with 6 iron), standard lie and length with shaft being the Rifle 6.5. The True Temper stiff shafts were fine but ball flight was waaaay high. Hit some more balls with 6 iron fitted with the Rifle and ball flight was 10 -15 yards lower on all shots - and as I stated below, ball trajectory was something I wanted to be able to adjust with these new irons. having them fitted with Golf Pride Tour velvet Grips.

I do appreciate your input and i do understand that these will not turn me into a single digit player overnight (If in fact ever) and that I'll have to work at my game and get used to using these clubs on the course.

What I do know though, is that I loved them, hit them well and felt comfortable hitting them. However as you state, hope that come November I still have that same feeling when standing in the pouring rain , with a wet / heavy lie trying to hit 5 iron mellow.gif

Also ordered 56° (13° bounce) Raw Haze wedge...

10 working days and they'll be here biggrin.gif smile.gif so I'll let you know in a couple of weeks if I made the right choice wink.gif

cool. hope you enjoy your clubs.

my only thought is, i've never met anyone who is standard lie and length. maybe I don't know enough golfers. did they get you to do a dynamic test for your lie?

he put some tape on the bottom of the club and I hit balls of of a plastic mat type thing !! Hit 12 balls this way and 10 showed a mark pretty much dead centre with 2 slightly closer to the heel of the club ?

When one has a clubfitting, does the clubfitter adjust your swing if it is significantly offplane? Or else , I assume, he will make lie, length etc. adustments based on whatever swing you have.

Not as far as I know. The Fitter looked at the swing that I have (regardless of how good / bad it is) and fitted me basis that.

Hard for them to say, well you should swing like this and this etc. and then fit you basis that, only for you to go out and play with your 'normal' swing and find the clubs aren't fitted correctly.

A clubfitter works off what your swing is, not what they wish to make it. However I often find that a new set up of clubs has that magic tag and swing change sets in for a week or two before the old swing reappears:) I tend to check the lies again when players come back.

That's great - didn't realise you were shooting that well. Sounds like you'll be fine with them and not have to change them any time soon either.

Good shooting at the club championship too - what's your handicap now?

It also sounds like you had a very professional fitting session too - far better than I got!

was 16.8, down to 14.7 now. My aim in Jan 05, was to be at 14 by Aug, so I'm on track.

Playing a few different courses over the coming weeks (courses I used to play on but haven't since joining my new club). That will be the test. Are my good scores down to me playing on the same course week in week out ?? blink.gif

I purchased my TM RAC's OS2's in March and also started having lessons with my club pro. His advice was to leave them standard lie and length until we see what my swing does. My previous irons were 0.5" shortened and 2° upright. So far seems to be fine, controlling the clubs well, and sticking to my swing changes too (mostly).
