Old clubs or myself to blame?

Hi everyone, I’m just picking up golf again after I stopped 5 years ago (I’m 19 now). Recently I’ve started playing on my dad’s set, which comprises of a callaway big bertha x-12 iron set and the warbird series driver and woods. What I find is I can hit around 90-100 yards with the 7 iron and approximately the same distance with my 5 iron and driver. Is it because I still have not found the right technique that my distance is so short or is it partially due to the clubs I’m using being old? Appreciate advice before I invest in new clubs unnecessarily. Thanks!

Unfortunately, sounds like it’s your swing..have you had lessons before? A typical distance for a 7 iron is 130m, a 5 iron is 150m and driver is 210m for your casual golfer..obviously this will vary a bit with the ability of the golfer but I’ve had the x-12 and could hit the same distance maybe 5 metres less than irons I’m hitting now.

Thanks for the quick reply! I had about 10 lessons 5 years ago, so it’s ages ago since I had proper instruction. I do notice that drivers today are huge though. The other day a mate of mine mistook my driver for a 5 wood because of the clubhead size. Does clubhead size of the driver affect distance or accuracy in any way though? Mine should be like 250 cc if not mistaken.

Crawl before you walk imo..get some refresher instructions on getting a good consistent swing before looking to upgrade the equipment :) you need to at least be able to hit your irons first as the driver is going to amplify swing faults so it’s a waste of money to get a better driver when you aren’t able to hit the irons a decent distance..heed the advice of us golfing tragics who have spent hundreds of dollars to learn that the equipment is only as good as the person swinging it, and invest in a good golf coach who is reputable..

Quan, you can’t buy a better game in a sporting goods store.

Thanks everyone, I think I’ll go for the lessons! I’m in Bulleen just walking distance from the Bulleen driving range. Would definitely appreciate any recommendations of a coach. Cheers!

Not particularly handy to Bulleen, but Garth Cusick has been recommended by others.

You need lessons, then get your own set of clubs But play with those until you’re ready and have tried out the major brands and styles and you know what “feels right”
