Hooking my irons

Ive had my CG16 tours for about 5 months and im always hooking my irons from about 150 meters (to the green.) I couldnt figure out why it was happening but in the last 2 weeks i think ive found the reason why. When at address the club head is closed. The club feels comfortable like this and when i swing it always hooks left every time without fail. (naturally)
So when i address the ball square, with my thumb covering the cleveland label the club feels very strange, like the balance is all out of wack and i have zero confidence in my swing. I never make good contact when trying to hold the club square.

Should i get the clubs bent so they are open a bit? Can i do that with non forged clubs or is there something else i could try?

Could re work your grip alignment

I use the same grip alignment for my driver, Hybrid, SW and LW and dont have this problem.

Just rotate the grips on the shafts.
Your SW and LW are so lofted that a slightly closed club would just reduce loft a bit without hooking the ball.

The grips are right. I wish it was just a matter of turning them lol.
The club feels unbalanced when i square it up.
Ill post some pics

The pics i took dont really show what i mean. To hard to see the closed face and my grip.
If i put the ball way back in my stance (just inside my right foot) then i can square it up. but if i have the ball just left of centre stance, the face is slightly closed. The further forward the more closed it gets.
Too play a shot that feels ok with a sqaure face i have to aim right of the green and the ball still ends up left of the green.
I want to hit where im aiming :(

Swing issues mate. I bet your clubs are fine, have lessons?

Yes clubs are fine. It’s me. But what I don’t get is why don’t I have this problem with my other clubs?

No I havnt had any lessons. Should get onto it sooner rather than later.

When you set clubface alignment with hands mid-body and a bent left wrist, that will not be the clubface alignment when your hands and mid-body both are near the left instep and the left wrist is flat.
Bottom line is you don’t know what the clubface alignment is at impact, only at mid-body address.
So check it with a forward press, feet, knees, pelvis, navel, hands and wrists.
Or, take a swing at a ball teed up about navel high, stop the clubhead at the imaginary ball and look at the clubface or toe of the club. Square, open or closed? That’s impact alignment.
It should be slightly open, say 3-6 degrees because it will close during impact.

It’s more likely a swing fault. If the clubhead passes the hands before impact you won’t have a flat left wrist and nothing else much matters. i.e. your real swing will not be the same as your practice swing.
You’ll need a trained extra pair of eyes to pick up on that or a video camera. You probably won’t be able to feel the difference. And it starts much earlier than there anyway.

TheDart will have a creative solution if he pops in here.
I’ve seen him describe aiming farther and farther right until the ball stops hooking and starts going straight. Then gradually bring that straight ball flight back toward the target. If it starts hooking again do it again.
He can correct me if I got it wrong, or expound on it.

Id say you have built in compensations with other clubs. Everyone does it

Thanks for the tip oldmavrick, I’ll try that but will be hard by my self. I’ll need some lessons to cure it though.

I’ve always used the 10 finger grip but after some research I decided to change my grip. I went to the driving range after work today and hit 100 balls using the interlocking grip. Felt weird at 1st but I consistently hit the ball straight and didn’t hook 1! I changed back to my old grip and started to hook the ball again so from now on ill be using my new grip :) but now I have a blister on the side of my second finger from the pinky on my right hand. ( duno what that 1s called lol )
Off to Medway tomorrow so hopefully I play well 8)

Haha no worries, it’s hard to sift through the advice, we all mean well usually someone has the correct answer on here

A quick thought to consider …..... disconnected hands (10 finger grip) .......... and an over active right hand pushing and closing the clubface thru impact, against a pulling left hand.

A change to an Interlocking grip reduces the bottom hand’s ability to work independantly and rotate the clubface . the result is you hit them straighter.

Just a thought from a non pro.

As for your blister two ideas …...... are you letting loose of the club at the top of your backswing (so that your fingers move) ....... or are you strangling your hands together and your fingers “rubbing” at the point of contact when you rotate the club …...... again, just something to ponder.

Hi GPJ
Your spot on with everything you just said. I felt as though my right hand had to much say in my swing. My left arm is pretty weak tbh.

About the interlock. Not too sure. I think sometimes I feel I’m regriping on the back swing but I know I have a tight grip which is why I’m rubbing my fingers on impact/follow through.

I played the whole round with the interlock and often found myself trying to grip the putter like that lol. I hit the ball straight but not always making solid impact. Which is usual for me :(
I used a bandaid and bandage to cover my blister and it worked a treat.

3 ways to fix hook or slice

1 go to a good club fitter like Total Golf Performance in Melbourne and have Jon check clubs.
Incorrect lie angles this is a good indicator for hooking or slicing consistently.

2 have TGP check shaft as it may be too soft in tip for your swing which means when swing hard the face closes quickly..

If you mess around with your grip and other swing fundamentals you will over come problem short term but lessen your chances of improvement

3 go and see a AAA rated teaching PGA pro and have a lesson. lots of things could be happening in your swing to make the club face closed.

Tee, in order to get the hands working together, and quieten your stronger right hand, I’d suggest just put a touch of focus on taking the club back the first 18 or so inches, using just the left arm to move it.

(Let the right arm come along for the ride, but focus on moving it with the left arm and shoulder).

The other thing is getting caught into the trap of trying to hit the ball at 100%.

If you have that in mind when you play, that just gives your right hand the green light to try and hit it as hard as it can.

Try to forget about distance for a while (while still picking the appropriate club, or even one club more), and just try to swing smoothly, remembering to power the initial takeaway with your left side.

In doing that (not trying to hit the cover of it) .... you may find that your hands ( and in particular you right one) remain quieter thru the stroke.

That might also assist in getting you to lighten up on the grip a touch …...... knowing that you don’t need to belt them all flat out.

By the way, I quite often putt with an interlocking grip, to quiten down my hands and wrists ….... so if it feels natural for you, just do it ..... and just try to have the shaft a little more straight up and down, so that it runs thru the lifelines on both palms.

Just a couple of thoughts to consider ….......

All good advice here. I tend to hook my shots sometimes and I find slowing down my swing a little helps. Also, alignment can be a contributor. It’s natural to start closing your stance and aiming right if you are hooking it but this may actually cause a hook as your body compensates by pulling left to try and hit the target. Just a thought!

Much offset on the new irons?

Agreed with alignment issues and the resulting hook… I can vouch for that today, mind you it took me 14 holes to realise my shoulders were way out…frustrating, but at least something to be more aware of.

Thanks for your advice mate.

Hi GPJ.
Since we last spoke i haven’t been hooking but a few slices instead. Not many though.
Im noticing that my alignment isnt correct because im now hitting a lot of balls straight but right of target.

Im now using interlock for putting as its feels natural now. Not that it helps but just feels comfortable. Hmm maybe it does help as my distances when putting are pretty good, they just dont drop lol.

Lessons are on top of my to do list as i want to make more consistent contact with the ball. Im very inconsistent with ball striking.

I feel like my score should be a lot better, if i was 50% more consistent then id drop at least 10 shots off my game.

With driver and irons im about 30-40% confident before my shot. Within 100 meters im like 80% confident that ill hit the green. Around the greens with little chips im almost 100% confident that ill get it within 10 feet. Dosnt always happen but i just feel happy that ill make a good shot.
And putting? well Putting is putting lol.

Much offset on the new irons?

Im not sure. They were brand new when i got them and havnt been bent. They not forged so not sure on if or how far they can be bent.
About 2 years ago i got fitted by Taylormade and they said i needed 2 degrees upright. Not sure if CG16 tours can be bent that far or if infact i need that much angle anymore. One way to find out to see a pro when i get my lessons.

Offset to the hossel…not lie angle….offset helps with allowing a little extra time to square the club face for most of us slicers….

It may explain partially why the balls are going left…
