Slow Downswing

Just recently read a advice that the downswing should start slow and increase more so from 3/4 down to centre and through. It claimed a lot of speed is lost due to players accelerating from the top. Could a pro (or similar) ellaborate? Cheers

When I first started playing golf in the late 60’s I was sharing accommodation with the local golf pro who had recently finished his time under Les Wilson at Southport. Whenever a golf tournament was held in S.E Qld, I would call in sick and carry the bag. In those days Ted Ball and Billy Dunk were considered pretty fair golfers and worth watching. Ted Ball had the fastest swing in golf, if you blinked you’d miss it. The following is an in house article about Ted. Be sure to look him up on Wiki. The reason for a leisurely transition is to keep the swing in sequence where the speed gains steadily, exploding past the ball. The opposite is referred to as “pressing” where all the effort happens prematurely before the ball, usually with a jerk. This is something that happens to all golfers in varying degrees.
Totally ignorant about almost everything except golf. |

Even faster than Ian Stanley?? That would be fast!!
Control is doing the shortest possible stroke to make the shot. |

AB,. certainly not a pro, but heres a tip anyway. I agree in that you want the speed to build up slowly and not jerky or fast, which can happen if you start down too fast. (FYI …..... I think all the pro’s, like Elvis, may have left the building) In terms of how to monitor it though in your own swing, you could try this …... Grab your driver and turn the club around, grip it near the hosel . and then swing it like normal. Where does the whooshing sound need to happen? ...... thru the impact zone doesn’t it? Now swing it again and try to make the whooshing sound happen before then, eg before you reach halfway down in the swing. A couple of swings with the club reversed in your hands will let you know how you need to build the speed up to create the correct whooshing sound …. thru the impact zone. The greater the whoosh, the greater the speed, so you’ll soon see and more importantly, feel, what you need to do in terms of timing and speed, in order to create the loudest sound thru the impact zone …....... , and you’ll know exactly what speed works best at the top of your backswing on down.

yeah ive struggled with this a LOT i just have the urge to smash that little pill my pro gave me the following tip imagine you are at the start of a drag race(car) if you hit the accelerator to the max from the beginning the tyres will spin before gaining traction and steading however if you are a little more gentle on the accelerator form the beginnign you can then max it out as the car starts rolling without loss of traction hope this helps
You’re just jealous because the voices only talk to me |
