Longish downhill putts

Currently struggling with lengthy downhill putts, struggling with speed any advice or drills anyone could add would be great?

throw balls on the practice green

hit 100 putts in a row downhill

putt with your eyes closed (practice)

there is NO QUICK solution to this putt….

long, short, left and right = ALL FINGERED

Cheers mate, figuring out the hard way that there is no quick solution!

no dramas mate…

do this.

1. get on your practice green and commit to 2 hours
2. pick the most downhill 50 footer on the green. Put a tee at the spot.
3. throw 20-40 balls down the line to the hole.
4. come back and hit 50 putts from the same spot to the hole, although you want to get close to the hole (line), concentrate more on speed, tempo, stroke, rather than face angle, lines etc
5. come back and hit 30 putts again with your eyes closed.
6. finish the session with 10 putts that you really focus on line and speed

see how you get on

long, short, left and right = ALL FINGERED

oh yeah….I almost forgot.

and then do that 3 times per week for 3 months

you will be alot better putter after that

long, short, left and right = ALL FINGERED

Also try hitting them of the toe a little. It will slow them down a fair bit

i have done this with my driver & it does take distance off

any one else heading home to get married??

One thing I try to do …..... is to imagine them as a much shorter putt, on a flat green.

With downhill putts I reckon we can sometimes either smash them way past, or try to trickle them the whole way and in doing so, go way too easy on them.

If I’ve got a 40 foot downhill putt …....... I first try to work out how much distance the slope will add to the putt.

If I figure that the downslope will probably add another 10 feet to the putt, then I will try to hit a solid putt …..... to the 30 foot mark.

This makes the actual putt shorter for me in my mind, and in hitting it confidently and firmly to the “shorter” distance, it will generally hold it’s line better.

Once it gets to the 30 foot mark, then it will naturally slow slightly, and gravity can take it the rest of the way on down towards the hole.

It seems to work pretty well too, and I’ve sunk a fair few long downhillers, just by playing them firmly to the much shorter target.

Just a slightly different way to look at them ….....

As others have said, there’s no real tip anyone can give that will make things easier.. Putting is very much about feel and that’s not something that can be taught.

The few tips already mentioned are pretty good (hitting of the toe/heel and visualising the put being shorter than what it is) but if I was in your shoes i’d tackle this problem from the beginning and get yourself on the practice green.

An hour after each round is a good place to start.

+1 for aiming for a point short of the hole on a long downhill putt. The thing I often have to remind myself when looking at downhill putts is to make sure that I show myself just how downhill it is. So get around to the side of the putt or below it and take a look. I am guilty sometimes of just standing behind the putt, not realising just how much it is downhill and underestimating the slope.

Distance putting is all about feel and having complete control of the putter. Complete control requires the full weight of the putter to be fully supported by the hands prior to the takeaway.

Totally ignorant about almost everything except golf.

+1, every thing you said is spot on for me. Im also guilty of thinking that looks like a pretty flat green, come up a foot or two short then look from side on while your waiting for others to putt and then realize the slope. Especially when playing away from home

hit it to a different part of the green LOL…sory needed to be said…just jokes

I rate my downhill putts into 3 types

quick
very quick
slippery

anything above quick I pick a spot 3/4 to the hole

hit it there…..kinda hope a bit

let gravity do the rest

Golf is only a game…Yeah right who are you kidding?

Great tip
