I doubt that there has been a time in the history of golf in Oz where there has been so many scratch and better markers playing the game. I can remember a time when the State bodies were the ones who awarded scratch and better handicaps. At present it is a joke.

Could not agree more Raz, I got to a career best 1.4 handicap 20 something years ago when every card counted. I shot 2 career rounds of 6 under, and most other rounds were 2 under to about 6 over.

I am now of 3.7 ie 2.3 worse and I am no where near the player I was.

Some of the guys at my club now are off +2 to about 2 range and regularly return rounds of 6 to 10 over.

The current handicap system breeds inconsistency and quitters because you drop the worst 12 out of 20 rounds.

The old system taught you to grind out a reasonable round after a crap start because you knew the round counted.

The secret to fairway woods for me is to swing so slow that i nearly stall on the swing.
G has got me thinking my driver swing is a pitching wedge.
So less aggression. Not sure that will work for you.
Surprisingly I can nearly hit tha driver nearly as far as frank the “wallet”

I did have a playing lesson the other day and when I get my shoulders aligned correctly I’m finding that distance has come back to the driver….....at least that has been noticed over the last week. The range session yesterday was very promising.

No Codboy arranged it when I was up at Yarrawonga, with his girl, himself and my brother-in-law.

On second thoughts…....perhaps he organised it because he thought I needed it…..plus he’s qualified…...... as he plays of 1 point something.

FYI ….... Frank has never been short off the tee.

It’s just that 10m-20m bend in most of his drives that robs him of his true distance.

I played Southern with Frank a while ago now (probably after one of his lessons) and the straight drive was working well for him that day. Frank put plenty of his drives side by side with mine and outhit me a few times when I thought I’d caught it nicely.

Good to see the straight one is coming back again Frank, take two less clubs into the green now :-)

As for driving tips …. I have two to consider.

The first one …...... “Lower your eyes a touch when picking out a target ahead of you”.

All too often I think, we get caught up in trying to hit to a target at either our full driving distance, or at something well beyond it.

If you’re normal drive is say 220m, then pick out something that is only 200m away, and try to hit to it.

Knowing that you can get there easily takes the pressure off, it relaxes the body, and in particular, the forearms and hands … and allows you to put a much smoother swing on the ball as you’re not trying for distance.

The result is usually a much smoother swing, a more centred strike on the clubface, and it will probably still go you’re 220m (if not more), but without all the effort of your previous flat out efforts.
