Toe shots

I need some advice, I have been hitting the irons very well lately, but in the weekend comp I started hitting all the iron shots off the toe, scary stuff.

Anyone have any ideas on what would bring this on?
Would a flatter swing cause this? I have been working on a flatter swing with the driver so perhaps this has crept in to my iron swing, if that’s the issue then it has happened over night, very weird.

This may sound silly…but are you sure you aren’t standing too far from it at address? If you have been working on getting the swing flatter a tendency can be to edge away from the ball to establish a flatter plane from the get-go.

Otherwise, you may not be getting out through impact as mach as you should…put a tee in the ground 3-4 inches ahead of the ball and an inch outside with a 7 iron and make sure the clubhead is hitting the tee as you go through impact.

down and out…did ya get that?

Thanks Toolish,
I will give that a try.

Standing up a little into the impact zone from your initial posture?

yes i occasionally toe my hybrids or fairway woods and almost flies like a shank !

If Tiger plays Lefty will he be that good ?
Square is Good ? Sure is, if it's the right stick !
Good Golf is Fun plus the Great Outdoors...
In the Bag: Clubs and Balls. My Handicap is Bad Golf.

looks like my hands were not squaring up fast enuff and hence leaving the face pretty much open when coming from an inside path towards the impact area….

May I ask why you are trying to flatten your driver swing?

Toolish, I recently made a change to the left shoulder initiating the takeaway, this worked fine with the irons but was a disaster for the driver, loss of distance and I lost the draw I previously had,

I have since gone back to my old swing which feels flatter and this has bought back the feel I previously had with the driver along with the distance and draw,
all was well until last weekend when all the iron shots were off the toe.

I’m not sure if I am taking it back far enough on the inside, (could be the cause) I am hesitant to take it back to far inside, as I got into a nasty habit a while ago of doing that to the extreme.
Another problem could be an incorrect transition from the top, comming OTT.

I’m confused how this could happen overnight, and I have been wracking my brain trying to figure out what small change has caused this, The golf swing is so volatile.

My guess is that you are approaching the ball with too much of an in to out motion, but then attempting to hit (steer) the thing straight at the target (bending the plane line) – rather than continuing the (geometrically correct) down and outward (on plane) motion to low point.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I will try out your ideas at the range later this week and report back.
