Discussion for The Baseball Grip

baseball, grip one of my favourites, I use baseball grip myself, use to use overlap, but converted to jumbo grips and baseball grip, easy for me having artritis in my hands to hold onto the club.
Fantastic for kids till they get stronger

Baseball grip all the way here as you know mate. It has honestly never made sense to me to overlap or interlock the hands. I know people say “unity of the hands”, however from the computer’s point of view they are still too seperate entities that it must program – hence our need for educated hands. I personally find I have more control and can supply more power with both hands fully on the club!

Would it not be sensible for most golfers to give this a go and most don’t release the club effectively anyhow?

I have found that it does not affect my clubhead acceleration at all. I think it actually assists me in possessing the speed I do have.

Feel it, execute it, live with it.

Hitters enjoy a BB grip. Swingers get more from the closeness of overlaps via a more oily release being possible.

I find the Vardon grip or overlapping grip squares my shoulders up just a touch, I like that feeling.

Cliff: how that bottom hand goes on will change how the shoulders can square up. Right hand more “under” helps RFOP. This in turn tends to square shoulders that first pointed out to the left to be squarer.

hmm ok, my meaning of “squaring up” is to look at my stance from in front, ie, stand looking at my face, the shoulders are then square to the ground if I use the overlapping grip. The left shoulder doesn’t point up so high.

This is the reason I use it to putt as well. The whole thing means I can get my right shoulder out of the way more cleanly.

Baseball grip is highly recommended for the younger set. The grip tends to promote a good release and helps in the cocking of the wrists.

I’ve been experimenting with my grip the past few weeks and yet to find one that I’m comfortable with.

I have large hands and long fingers but my wrists and forearms are tiny in comparison and left eye dominant but right handed. I am also finding that when I hit a shot, be it driver or irons, I tend to find that my right hand is coming off the club at follow through.

Would a baseball grip be beneficial due to my weak wrists or is this a matter of hit the range and keep trying?

Cheers,

Mick

If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always gotten.

Boof,

Try splitting you hands, first a little then a lot, then different angles on your wrists, left and right till the ball goes straight.

Once all the experimenting is finished you can decide.

Honestly it could take 10 mins. Give it a crack. Don’t be fooled by what “the books” say.

Thanks Dart – I tend not to read too much about “technique” when it comes to golf and don’t even talk to me about swing planes ;-)

I was hoping to get some time at the range this afternoon but the grassed area was closed off because of the rain and not keen on hitting off astro with new clubs.

Cheers,

Mick

Managed to get out to the range and onto the grass this afternoon. The baseball grip wasn’t cutting it for me – felt as though I was going to lose the club midway through my swing and just wasn’t comfortable for me.

I tried the Strong Underhand Grip and saw a massive improvement in my shots but could you clarify Paul if I should be gripping the club between the fingers and heel pad and should my right thumb be down the side of the club or more on top?? Hope this makes sense?

Cheers,

Mick

Bah!

Boof,

That make extreme sense. Try the club over the heel pad, on the life line but the right thumb can go on top. The left thumb might be good behind.

The main thing is, what gets you started cracking the ball might need some adjustment the rest of your life. Constant servicing !

Like every thing else. You can’t take your eyes off it.

LOOK LOOK LOOK! ;-)

tried the BB grip
and now using the modified overlap
ie the pinkie sits in the groove of the fore and middle fingers of the lead hand

as horses for courses and courses for horses goes
i find the current grip helps me better

If Tiger plays Lefty will he be that good ?
Square is Good ? Sure is, if it's the right stick !

Remember the point of trying these other grips is so that you get to sense different feelings of what is going on. Some will love them and keep using the grips. Others will use the new ‘feel’ in their old grip to become more aware of certain parts of their swings.

Extreme Baseball grips seem to allow you to feel ‘getting to both arms straight’ which is a place few social golfers ever reach. It feels really strong without having to bust at the ball.

well said guru….

yup now i can sort of appreciate the overlap grip more than b4 :)

Thanks Dart – I will no doubt try and hit the range again before taking to the course – I prefer course time but don’t want to delay play by stuffing around with a new grip.

I don’t know if it was my new grip but I found I had to play my long irons further back in my stance? Ahhh the joys of this game!

Cheers,

Mick

I started off with golf maybe five years ago and I read, like most
people, that the ‘Vardon’ grip or the interlock was the ‘good players grip’. Rhythm, softness, birds and toothpaste. Et cetera.

I also read that the ten-finger grip was for children, old women or wimps. Weak-handed people. Like most people, I said to myself, ‘I want to be a good player’, got over the initial discomfort, and learned to overlap.

As time went by with luck and a great day’s putting (I did learn to putt well), I could just about shoot 90. And that’s where I got stuck.

Every experiment ended with me figuring out that the grip was the root of all my problems. No matter what I tried, I could never figure out a way to hold the club that let me hit good shots consistently. And let me just say that I swear I had the damn club in my fingers, and that I have tried ‘Strong’, ‘Weak’ and plenty in-between.

I studied the photos, and tried to copy Tiger, Ernie or anyone else with those ‘great fundamentals’ we hear about. I had my pro tell me my grip was perfect (he got me to work on my takeaway – which met with limited success followed by reversion to the mean).

Eventually, fairly quickly in fact, I came to hate grip articles that started with ‘there are three types of grip’ – in my book, these articles are in a world of lazy, repetitive golf instruction, the laziest, most repetitive of all. And they aren’t true; there are a million and one types of grip – different emphases, etc. (and I’ve tried lots of them).

Now, after a few months reading this site, assimilating information, I think that the ‘Vardon’ grip is very much a swinger’s hold, and that it very much works against the beginner.

For good players, I would guess that it ‘shortens’ the hinge, allowing more snap and creating more speed possibilities late in the swing. Jim Furyk’s double overlap, and Tiger and Jack’s small hand interlocks – also indicate to me that the ‘Vardon’ is the right grip for very good players who swing.

Personally, I have big hands and palms – I can hold a basketball easily in one hand, and almost touch my fingers off eachother wrapped around a pint glass – all of which means I have awful trouble getting my hands on the club nicely.

I also feel that a big handed person gripping in the fingers puts more pressure on the wrists – law of the lever – so breakdown is harder to resist.

Anyway, the upshot was that I was crap at golf, and it seemed a little strange to me because I’m a decent athlete, I practiced, I didn’t quit, I could execute reasonably mentally at other sports – about a 6 or 8 handicap at pool, and a decent rugby and football player.

And I had read elsewhere (Nicklaus, I think) that big hands used to be considered a good thing for golf. Not for me they hadn’t been.

But then I switched to the ten-finger grip, and ‘hitting’ suddenly made sense. Needless to say, I’ve had the ‘I’m onto something here feeling before’, so even though I was a bit excited, I was cautious. But the good things kept happening, day after day, and other things started to make sense too.

‘Down and out’ became an obvious and easy key movement instead of an effortful impossibility. A smooth thing.

And my right elbow could get past my right hip easily, and my right forearm felt ‘on plane’. I didn’t feel my body was in my way any more – or that all my power was crashing into itself.

Most important, the stuff Lagpressure and others had written about flexing the shaft on the way down started to make complete sense. I could feel it, and with it I had real ‘BANG’ – flush, repeatable contact.

And I had no issue with ‘throw away my lag’ or ‘casting’ – something I knew I often did with the old swing.

Basically, with a ten finger grip and what felt like a shorter, quicker but still complete swing – a swing with no hanging around – I achieved my best ever results; some pushes and hooks but a far higher quotient of really great what I would call ‘scoring’ shots.

So, anyone who has been where I’ve been – i.e. all over the course and driven mad for nearly five years now by this wonderful but incredibly elusive lifestyle choice, I suggest you give the two handed slap with the right a go – accelerate, bend the shaft in the downswing and hit down and out. Reading Lagpressure’s contributions to the above thread is also pretty essential, or at least it was for me.

Anyway, nice one to Dart and Guru, and, once again, to Lag.

Keep up the great work.

Beezneeds,

Nice post mate.

Good to hear that you have found something that works for you, having been indepedently minded enough to work it out for yourself.

There is a lesson for all of us in there somewhere!

Beez: What you just posted is exactly what Dart and I tried to entice players to do….not just take a look and use a grip but to experiment with what a grip does that allows ‘you’ to ‘feel’ not only more in control but what does not feel good.

Cookie cutting is not good for golf. However we can make those Imperatives happen with awareness is why TGM has so so so many ways within it of skinning the cat. (To Philthevet – another weird English way of saying different ways to so a job).

What about short game, wich is all about feeling?
Thank you
