One for the lefties! Here’s another in the swing series from the Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio

It’s a 12 shot sequence of Phil Mickelson with his iron and file size is about 450k

Just post impact, is his left hand nearly off the shaft??? If so what bit is still connected?

Even the shot before that, it looks like he’s only gripping it with the fingers.

Looks like the lag pressure point is still there though, check the index finger on the left hand in the frame before impact, can see the pressure there!

down and out…did ya get that?

My comments as a leftie who admires this guy and what he has achieved:

Interesting that he seems to set up at address on the heel of the club.

Also, I note that he also lifts up away from the ball immediately on commencing his backswing. I was always taught to start the takeaway along the ground so as to maintain swing line.

I also note the flat arc takeaway which he then pulls up very vertical over his left shoulder – interesting.

Not much leg power/hip movement thru impact (see Tiger, for example) – but he is a big boy so he probably doesn’t need to.

Wrist snap at impact is also very pronounced – probably accounts for his prolific draw action.

Does his head seem to come up quickly after impact to anyone else?

Wish I had his swing!!!

Lefties Rule!

Toollish: Base of the left forefinger is indeed still maitaining itself on the shaft:)

sacrockett: I have 3 boys, all lefties. You are not alone out there. They love it when the lefties do well in a tournament. Now your low and slow takeaway comment is interesting. It can be hard to keep this type of takeaway on plane without a reverse pivot being have to be dealt with. Try the flashlight drill out and see whether you are still on plane and check that your lead shoulder has not dropped rather than turned.

Thanks Guru

What is the flashlight drill? Where can I find info about it?

This may be the cause of my pushing to the left problem (I call it a fade but it really borders on a slice).

Cheers
Shane

Lefties Rule!

Flashlights

OTT leads to hitting the ball in the wrong place which can mean a slice so an on plane swing may well help if you have a good clubface action.

My favorite thing and hope for golfing kind!

Notice between 6 and 7. the angle of the shaft has not changed much but the shoulder angle has changed about 90 degrees.

Point: You change the shaft angle when we change the shoulder angle, therefore coming over the top.

This is the main Lag to sustain through the ball.

Try turning the shoulders 90 degrees into the downswing and leaving the shaft pointing somewhere behind the ball till release of shoulders and swing.

Notice,

Between 7 & 8 the shoulders move 45 degrees but the club moves 180 degrees.

What a release of velocity and power! Caused by the first move.

You can do that.

Paul n’all,

What do you think of #3…....Clubface shut a little?

That sure is one heck of a horizontal hinge, eh?

Yeah Spike,

If it is, it means he has to let it release a few inches later to avoid a hook.

These are the small thing that make the difference to a great player. What to do with what detail.

If it is true and not his grip compared to the clubface then I’d say he hasn’t done a full one-quarter turn of his right hand.

looks like phil is using a graphite shaft for that Iron ??

If Tiger plays Lefty will he be that good ?
Square is Good ? Sure is, if it's the right stick !
