look at frame #8 and the rotation of his hips, hence my question about the hips in another post. why are his hips so much more open than all amateurs, how do they get there (conscious effort or resultant of something), and what is the benefit of this with regard to power?

Enie is very subtle, with a superbly controlled loose looking pivot. His timing is such that this hip/shoulder pivot rotation has his hands in sync. Note how much room he has for his right elbow to clear the inside line to the ball. That comes from the right shoulder initially driving down plane then the pivot rotation.

guru, this is something to pursue for me. i feel like my swing is too effort-filled in contrast to the result. it’s clear ernie is moving from a higher plane down to get the club back on plane. we have a million threads regarding the bump or slide or glide or however we want to describe it. clearly, that thought isn’t working for me. hogan described the pane of glass turning to the right as the right arm gets back on plane from the top…that thought does work to get the forearm in position to support the club and contact is usually quite good, yet the ball is a straight push to the right. now what? i’m having trouble turning the pane of glass to the right, then keeping things on plane into and through impact to effect a little draw or a straight shot. you mention the right shoulder driving down the plane…where exactly is that plane? and what about the right elbow? i remember as a kid, someone saying “try to put your right elbow into your front pocket.” does the elbow have any real affect here? i’m sorry to seem so confused. my ideal here is to set the swing at the top and then simply move that apparatus down on plane and keep it there until release time. it seems easier than it is turning out to be. b

TTSH, This may sound a bit too basic as you may have already done this…... With a club across the shoulders arms criss-crossed, go the a backswing position. See if you can find the independent rocking motion that the shoulders can make without the body moving. This small rotation (verticle) can bring about the awareness of the downward direction the right should can make which, incidentally causes the left shoulder to move up. The feeling is like moving the right shoulder down toward your right foot. Once you can go no further in the independent move, continue downward and see if that doesn’t cause a reaction in the left hip. Keep going until the right shoulder is pointing at the ball. This should create quite a reaction in the left hip. This right shoulder down that incline plane can then become a learned yet natural reaction causing or responding to how you choose to start down. Hope that helps a bit!

Great description there Spike. TTSH, if all balls are pushes, then try move the ball a tad forward to find where they will go out straight. Have a deep think about the dowels in The Plane Series of articles. Your sheet of glass is right there in a window reflection for you to see if you ‘get’ what the dowels give you a visual concept to work with. Dowels are commonly seen in the USPGA Tour these days:)

Spike, this was a momentous post for me. I didn’t have access to a club, but used a towel in the hotel room. I’ve been struggling with turning left and pulling shots. Doing this move, I realize that what I’ve been doing is taking my right shoulder to the ball by changing the angle of my shoulder to my spine, sort of a bench press move with my right shoulder. What I felt by using the towel is that my glutes lenghten back, my chest sort of arches into the downswing, and muscles around my right scapula feel like they’re pushing, while the shoulders stay inline and square.. I’m pretty sure I recognize this as what my coach has been trying to get me to do. Thanks a million! Laney
