The Golfing Machine

Hi All,

I have seen a lot of references on this forum to The Golfing Machine (TGM). Last weekend I had a lesson for the first time with a qualified TGM instructor. I had been getting very frustrated with other instructors as they kept pointing out the same problems but none actually ever managed to materially fix anything (not from a lack of practicing on my part). When I saw the TGM instructor he radically changed my set-up, back swing and impact position. Whilst still hitting inconsistently (which is understandable after only one lesson) I found that I gained a much better understanding of how the swing should actually work and feel which I never got from other instructors. So my first impressions were very positive although it's early days.

Anyway, the question I really have for anyone wishing to particiapte in this topic is:
1) Has anyone else had any experience with TGM?
2) What is it and can anyone actually explain to me how it is different from "traditional" coaching methods? Iis it a more mechanical way of teaching?

Thanks

You may be hard pressed to find anyone on this forum that has either had experience with TGM or is even prepared to talk about TGM

Beware of cheap imitations - Especially from the US

Haha, I love the smell of sarcasm in the morning tongue.gif

Been a while since the recording button has been pushed but here we go'

TGM is a book written by a chap called Homer Kelly. He based his study of golf on scientific principles trying to work out the whys, whats and hows. The book itself is a hard read as it is a technical encyclopedia of all the parts and combinations thereof for all sorts of swings. So TGM is not about a particular swing pattern, it encompasses all of them.

Within the first part of the book he set out a few things which must be done in order to maximize best power and control within any of the swing types.

Away from the book now. If you have a good coach (TGM or not), what you may find is that they will explain the why you have to do something rather than just saying "do this". That means that you will hang your hat on the learning process if you can see that it makes sense rather than just a matter of sense.

What TGM can do is take you to real depth IF you are so inclined. ie what is a plane in motion, why is it useful to know, what controls the clubface and how it affects ball flight for real.

All the Golf School articles are TGM based with a little poetic twist to get the concepts across before the details:)

Have fun learning more and more.

Welcome to the darkside mate.

TGM has an 'interesting' reputation. If you start talking to people who know of it there is generally a love or a hate of it...not many fit in the 'it is OK' category.

Guru has explained what it is all about...good luck with the new coach.

down and out…did ya get that?

Thanks, how about I give this a crack for a while and then I'll post a few pre- and post TGM teaching videos of my swing on the forum. Be interesting to get peoples thoughts on the changes

Are you in Melbourne? I'm looking for a TGM coach/teacher in Melbourne. Anyone?

Yes, try John Furze who teaches at the Sandringham Golf Academy.

Bryan Fergusson at Albert Park is a good central point.

Yes, yes, yes!!! Bryan is a great teacher!!!

I agree, John helped me allot when he was at Moorabbin... wink.gif

I have also been to Nadine Gole @ Cheltenham...she is fantastic at taking an uncomplicated approach to swing dynamics. The best short game coach I know of. wink.gif

GREAT idea, one that I wish more people would adopt!

The best way to see if The Golfing Machine - or any golf system - or any workout program - etc - works for you is to go at it

100%

for a period of time. Don't "kinda" try it, all the while trying to reconcile the new info with old info you have (which may or may not be correct anyhow). Give it a try,

trust it,

and see where it takes you. If it doesn't work and you're executing correctly, alter the program or try something else.

But don't get into it unless you're ready to fully commit for a given period of time. I like the way you think!

In Melbourne...
you will be lucky to get Bryan...I think, to see him, just book an appointment through Albert Park driving range...Bryan is great.. this gadget man carry 4 video cameras with him.

Having said that Steve Khatib is a good teacher too, if you want to join the BEN DOYLE's tree.. Seeing Steve will be the best choice.. (Ivanhole)... Steve is a gadget man too... virually all the traning tools you can think of.

I would say that those are the pros I know, not doing the lesson for money...they do it because they love teaching, and they love helping people with a better swing.

Willow @ Lang Lang. Fantastic TGM teacher.

I know of pretty much all of the people named so far.

Based on an admittedly short viewing of him teaching plus heaps of feedback from others who I know that know Steve Khatib well I would suggest you look at others before going with Steve.

Wow lots of TGM guys down under I guess eh...lots of different opinions too.

U gotta find the right guy that's for sure...

What does Steve Khatib teach...?

Here's a clue Paul.

He used to call himself "Four Barrel..." and maybe still does. Check him out on BM's site.

Thanks Burner. Yaya 4B on BM's site eh...just asked cause most I've seen from him so far is good. I am across the world tho and of course have not had a lesson.

The Ben Doyle Tree:

Ben Doyle

Just a sample...

Gregg McHatton - Brian Manzella - Tom Ness/Chuck Cook - Michael Jacobs - Steve Khatib
Bobby Schaffer - Mike Finney - Tom Bartlett - Martin Hall

Pretty good tree, eh?

Brian...FYI...most of those names probably mean nothing to most of the members here.

But, nice to see you posting on iseek!!

down and out…did ya get that?

Who are these people? Are they all TGM instructors?

Jacobs, Finney and Bartlett are all people that work with/for brian manzella, teach TGM principles, not sure who is accredited there though.

Manzella, McHatton, Cook, Martin, Schaffer and Khatib are all TGM accredited to my knowledge...not sure about Tom Ness.

McHatton has a very distinctive style, looootttttss of lag, seems very pivot driven. Cotto370's swing looks a bit McHatton'ish without being trained that way.

Last...but definately not least...Ben Doyle...wrote the forward to TGM book, and trained Manzella plus others...first pro ever to teach TGM.

Hi Brian, good to know you come by occassionally:)

i went to Steve Khatibs golf clinic in Sydney 2 weeks ago and after spending years learning $%#@ all from pros over the last 4 years i feel ive finally found a real coach and i spoke to a guy from Melbourne who flew up for the clinic as well he takes lessons of steve every week and said he is the best coach in victora , this guy was previously getting lessons of other pro's and getting know where , but Steve's not for everyone i guess alot of guys with suspect swings or who really dont understand this great game will not work out with Steve he doesn’t massage youre ego and tell you , you have a great swing when clearly you dont, but he gets results i dare say half these guys posting on here have hack like swings and couldnt teach for $%#@!!!

try steve khatib you will not be dissapointed dont listen to these hacks trust me from a guy who taskes regular lessons and has n o foot in anyones camp khatibs worth it,
