Hi all having read the thread on hip bump and trying to put this move into play,i have a question- working on this the other day i was told the best way to “feel” the bump was to do a figure 8 swing, go out wide come down on the inside doing it s l o w l y i noticed that once you reach the top there is a kind of “fall back” towards target as the hands drop andn the hips bump is this correct? its hard to explain but if you try the figure 8 swing, concentrate on your back and sence the “fall back” before everything bumps and drops BTW this question is about hip bump/slide, having read other posts about this i do not wish to get into a whole dicussion with the non beleivers of the hip bump-so please refrain from commenting

The left shoulder needs to be braced against the right hip at the top for the hip bump or lateral move to be effective. It depends on quite a few things including great posture, leg and pivot action and the left shoulder blade lying flat against the rib cage. In other words the left shoulder has to be fixed to the right hip to create a solid platform for the arms to work off. The hip bump used this way increases the torque of the body coil while shifting the Centre Of Mass across to the left before the shoulders unwind.
Totally ignorant about almost everything except golf. |

this is waht i was talking about(in bold) (from the “Vid on use of hips on downswing thread” on ISG) In TGM it’s known as hula-hula, an independent but coordinate with the shoulders lateral hip bump parallel to the delivery line. “All motion starts with a parallel weight shift, parallel to the delivery line, independent but coordinate with the shoulder motion.” Lynn Blake calls it “taking up the slack”. That video is dramatic or exaggerated. It may be almost imperceptible, an inch or so, or 6 inches. Moe Norman had an exaggerated parallel left slide, modeled after Knudson. He said that he and Ben Hogan had studied Knudson. He also said it started before reaching the Top of the backstroke. Optional. Another option is a reverse hip turn. The right hip wipes the tush line targetward, then holds there while the left hip returns to join the right on the tush line in the downstroke.

Winn, You have plenty of good ideas for experimentation. Keep in mind what you want you hands and clubhead to do and start work. Stop when you have the result you want.
