Hey Zen, nice post.

I don’t think Foley is accountable for Tigers behavior; we are all on our own in this department. With that said, our behavior is a reflection of our friends, family, and coaches, it certainly matters to them. If I was Sean, I would be setting some new ground rules, if Tiger is above acting like a gentleman and not a spoiled brat, it’s a sad day in sports. Whats hard for me to understand is that he has been through so much regarding his off course behavior that I don’t understand why he is still making poor on course choices. It would be interesting to know if he has anyone in his life that is helping him mature as a man.

The notion that he is so frustrated that he doesn’t have any control of his emotions is concerning. This is not a sign of a strong mind or mental state. If you don’t have control of your mind, how on earth could you have control of your swing? The point I was making is that in my book, the mind is the first thing to get right; it makes the physical training possible. If I was Sean Foley, this is what I would be most concerned with.

Head Pro,
Great post, you hit the nail on the head. Since father lost his father he has no guidance. If he did have good guidance his personal life issues would have never happened in the first place.
Sadly he had and has too many yes men around him.

Tiger is addressing his issues and time will heal all wounds although Tiger is in the public eye and like any human been going through struggles, sure he is going have melt downs and out bursts. No it’s no acceptable his behaviour being a public figure or roll model, although may be we all need to cut some slack and a bit more understanding the cameras are always on him for us to see and judge.

Although what we have to understand is Tiger in the healing process where he is at the anger stage and this is part of the healing process and sadly for Tiger and us every one else we see this.
I went through this during my healing process after my accident, you can be fine and out of the blue something triggers your anger deep deep down, it could be some thing very small or even petty, you then explode with emotion which is anger and it’s uncontrollable. You can’t stop it or control it. It’s a scary feeling. After you calm down you got what the hell, you don’t know why you exploded or how to control it.

I can tell you first hand no shrink etc can help you cure yours issues, they can point out these are the causes, although they can’t tell you how to cure it. You have work it out for yourself, you have to find inner peace, inner happiness the list goes on.
Time is the best medicine and hard work confronting and dealing with your issues. Most importantly you have to have the desire to want to confront your issues. Then you find ways and answers along the way.
Sadly this is why there is so many people screwed up in this world because Firstly they don’t want to confront or acknowledge they have issues, Nor do they desire to find answers or ways to resolve their issues.

First step acknowledgement, Tiger publicly acknowledged he has issues. The way I see it,sure we’ll see a side we don’t like to see of Tiger, although we also get to see him grow, change and become a better man hope fully in the near future.

Well said mate.

I think that if you are looking for a golf ball, Titleist is the way to go. It has been the number 1 ball on tour for the past 30 years or so. When I was a member at Thurgoona some 10 years ago and the greens were wet in winter, I didnt use the Pro V as it had too much backspin for the wet greens. I used the Titleist NXT Tour. That would be your best bet to find a replacement ball. Have you tried it yet?

As a person who lost a parent when I was only 26, I know what Tiger is going through. He feels lost and in time he will find his own way. It took me 4 years after my mother died to get my life back on track. The public can scrutinize all they like; Tiger in his own time will find the path he needs. Good luck Tiger!!!!!

Not sure if this is stupid or not. In my never ending quest for consistency out of bunkers I found something that may or may not make sense.
I found when I had my practice swing it all felt correct but once I put a ball at the club I think my mind must have went ‘hit’ and ‘swing’ causing me to change my ‘stroke’(for a better word)

Is there a easy way to think about the ‘stroke’ so that the ball isn’t the focus? If that makes sense?!

It’s a good question AB, we are taught to focus on the ball which for many will result in overt attention resulting in the old hit impulse, hitting at the object we are intently focused on.

What we need in golf is Covert attention which is the act of mentally focusing on something else while you are focused on the ball. The something else might be your club hitting through the sand or a complete finish facing the target.

Overt & Covert attention is a pretty interesting study, it goes unnoticed in golf instruction because we cant see it.

Behavioral Training
The emphasis is on the acquisition of technical skills. Coaches promote high levels of physical effort through simple to complex drills using high levels of repetitive practice. Behavioral training draws the athlete’s attention into their own body. This type of training can be hit & miss, meaning performance is exceptionally good one day and poor the next which can leave the athlete at a loss to know why.

Decision Training
External focus is encouraged to direct the athletes attention outward to the critical objects, locations, and tactical positions and movements. Communication between coach and athlete change from one where the coach tells the athlete what to do to one where the student is asked to observe and make decisions that will change the result. Decision Training tends to be a positive journey of exploration as the coach leads the student to discover how they do it best.

It is good to realise there are two aspects of any game. The learning of it and the playing.

It does not matter how well you play if you are deficient in the learning. You can’t get no – satisfaction. There is something still wrong. Sure you can limp around with it, but that is not why you came to play.

A lot of coaches teach grip, stance, balance, steady head, straight left arm because they have not the faintest idea of the fundamentals i.e. rhythm, loading storage and release; on plane hinge action and power components.

It is not hard to get a hacker to break 90 but they will never break 80 without a fundamentally sound golf swing. And that is what coaches can’t teach.

Let’s take a vote – all those in favour?. All those against?

Gives me a lot to work on. Everybody talks about “flat left wrist” but that video shows it up perfectly. Thanks.

I’m for teaching dynamic movement early on, lots of instruction on the set up position only gets students bound to a static position.

Rhythm, Loading, Storage, Release, on plane hinge action and
power components.

Teach it early and dont give up until they get it.

Hi Headpro, my best handicap was a while ago{3} but cant really say that I felt that “I had got it”. Each day was different. What you, Dart and Zen teach here makes a lot of sense and many thanks for it. people can say things to help but seeing a video ,like the one above, has made me so much more aware of “flat left wrist’.Something has klicked tonight. Thanks again…Mike.

Experiment

The past 3 weeks, I decided to teach an adult beginner group the ‘Flying Wedge’ without giving them any other golf instruction.

It’s amazing how everything has fallen into place. They love the distance, consistency, and the sound the ball makes with this short swing. Fat & thin shots are almost all gone.

They are now asking me to take them on the course because they want to see if it works on the course. I am wondering when I’m suppose to go over the grip, aim, stance, posture, ect, ect, ect.

This experiment could put me out of business.

Scratching my head now.

HP,is there a device or drill(prefer device) that can help me start to load my hips on the backswing correctly as i have been strugling to get any distance from my clubs(mainly driver and other woods) and its getting quite frustrating.thanks

I have used it a bit but not enough to see any results yet.

I tried the Somax hip tension device when I was up to see HP and Pete. Really liked it. Great stretch for certain lower back places as well…

Emphasis on PLAY, going to make them smile while I teach them GPS. It’s the next experiment.

brilliant question !

i have been told , lovely swing, lovely swing, hit it like that then…............the red mist comes down, swing is nothing like the previous ones and ends up a scrappy effort or swing too hard !

I’ve tried seeing things from your point of view but I can’t get my head that far up my arse !!

Bobby Lock said, “the way to be consistent is to swing the club at the same speed and the same length”.

Worth thinking about? I never did but someone might.

The word ‘stroke’ is not allowed at some clubs with older members :)

I always start my lessons be asking my students to send a few out there.
