When you watch the 2D video of the golfer you would swear his lower body starts the downswing, although when this pro was measured his shoulders reached maximum speed before his lower body did. This always blows my mind, I see a 2D video and think yeah he engages his lower body first and when I get the 3D data back how wrong I am. This is why I think 3D is so important to give us the ability to find out how our body is truly coordinating motion, speed and power in our golf swing. Once we identify this then we can create a plan how to improve our coordination patterns in our golf swing.

I thought I would share this video on a guy who has had gained some really great results in the last month doing his Progressive Skills Training.
We worked really hard on improving his lower body mechanics, in the video you will notice some pretty good over all improvements.
The guy worked hard which paid off for him so far. Great Effort.

Golf swing improvements with in a month.

Hi Zen I have an issue hoping you may be able to give me some theoretical assistance with.
I’m a left hander and with my longer clubs I get a small but still annoying slice. I “think” I have narrowed it down and would appreciate your view. On downswing I seem to be pushing my right hip forward and left hip collapsing in to it’s self, seems like my hips are ending up pointing to the left after my swing.
Are there any drills you could recommend to keep my hips square at impact at all ?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time

Hi Indy,
Thank you for your question.
Do you have a video I could take a look at there could be a number of reasons causing these issues. If you don’t feel comfortable put your swing up here send me an email and happy to take a look.
If I could view your swing this give me a better understand of how you move and give a better idea to what is causing your issues. I have a few ideas which could definitely help you.

Hi Zen,

Recently watched a video of my swing and my faults are excessive hip spinning out and consequently a blocked right elbow which leads to casting and a flip to save the shot. This explains my lack of distance.

My question is whether zenolink is something that can help me overcome this? I feel like I am misfiring top half vs lower half of my body when I swing. I also want to swing in a way that preserves my hips and joints as my left knee has been injured before and I can certainly feel some stresses in it when i swing.

For what its worth, I’m a natural lefty playing right handed clubs. Sometimes feel like my left side wants to dominate the whole swing.

All the gear I want yet lacking the skill I need.

Goals for 2012:
1) Driver carry 240m @ 60% fairways
2) 7 GIR per round
3) <34 putts per round

Two Piece,
Thank you for your question.
You are right regards the lower body spinning. This can make you disjointed with the upper body and can cause casting etc.
The stresses your feeling on your knee joints and hips is from the hips spinning out. What happens is your hips are still accelerating to a full finish, the force produced from the hips spinning is being exerted on your left knee and hips. This isn’t uncommon either, I have worked with tour players with the same problematic issues.
What causes these issues, is mainly from poor connection with the ground. What I mean by this is to produce rotational acceleration of the hips we should use the ground. By training ourselves to use our feet and lower body to connect with the ground, we can accelerate and decelerate the lower body.
Why is this important?
First reason is when we start the downswing the hips accelerate first. The reason we do this is when the hips rotate towards the target they stretch the muscles between the lower body and upper body. In order for these muscles to contract, the lower body has to slow down or decelerate. Once this occurs it allows the muscles to contract to accelerate the upper body.
The second reason is when the lower decelerates or slows down the rotational speed is transferred to the upper body. For you this would be very important because this would stop you spinning out and as a result would reduce you putting rotational speed and force on your left knee and hip. It would also stop you being over the top and resolves your lower body and upper body being disjointed.
What we could do for is is train your how to use the ground more effectively and train your how to use your muscles to power your golf swing. I hope this makes sense, pretty hard to explain in writing. lol.
This article will help give a better understanding of spinning hips.

Two Piece,
To resolve your problems what we do is focus on Specific Activity Coordination training.
How the body moves and sequences during an activity is key to performance and avoiding injury. Utilizing training for improved golf swing performance is best accomplished through improving activity specific coordination.

The body moves in very specific patterns during the golf swing. These patterns can be referred to as activity specific coordination. The more efficient and effective the patterns of movement or coordination the better the golf swing performance.

Some keys to golf swing coordination:
1.The body uses the back swing as a counter movement in an effort to more effectively load the muscles during the down swing. As a result, the body must effectively and efficiently change direction from back swing to down swing to take advantage and properly load and sequence muscular activity.Stability – lower body and torso/core are crucial to this process.A key aspect to stability and golf coordination is the ability to rotate body segments, in particular the pelvis, upper torso and arms around a stable core.Maintaining a stable core depends heavily on lower body stability and mechanics.

2.The lower body creates a force couple or torque to initiate the down swing and start the speed generation process. In order to do this, the feet must first be connected solidly to the ground and weight/force must be applied into the ground through the balls of the feet. The feet grip the ground with a downward force while at the same time pushing along the surface of the ground to accelerate the pelvis. There is a very specific blend of linear component or forward weight shift and rotational component.

3.The pelvis is connected to the upper body via the core musculature and a stretch-shorten process.Core muscles are rapidly stretched during the downswing and respond by contracting strongly. This action produces muscular force as well as a transference and amplification of speed between the pelvis and upper torso. The pelvis acts as an “anchor” to “whip” the upper body. This sequence and core muscular engagement are crucial to an effective and efficient development of club head speed. This same process occurs between the upper torso and the arms.Speed developed at the pelvis is amplified as it is passed to the upper torso and then again to the arms.

4.As the club head nears the impact zone, the body braces to release the club and accelerate the club head. The ability to brace is directly related to lower body connection to the ground through the feet and core strength. At the same time, the arms must stay relaxed to allow speed to be fully transferred to the club head through impact.

Thanks Zen,

Im starting to understand the ground forces. By using the ground I actually feel my quads, glutes and hamstrings in tension and the hip moving just seems to be a side effect of using the leg muscles. This feels different to just using the core to move the hips. I will try this out at the range and course this weekend.

I definitely want to work on efficiency and safety in the swing but the official zenolink site didn’t give me much more info.

All the gear I want yet lacking the skill I need.

Glad the info helped and gave you some ideas to work with.
Lets us know how you go with at the range. Ideally we need to train it, even with my knowledge I need to train my ground forces.
Our website is in a revamp, we are soon releasing ZenoLink 2.0 with an app as well, you can look at your swing in 3D animation at every angle. Can’t say too much at this stage. I’m very excited when this gets released.
The website is for athletes and golf coaches to access their data and training. We don’t need to market in the prospective of coaches market our product/service by test their athletes. They educate and encourage their client to get tested. The coach tests their clients and upload to us for processing their data. We also generate their PST programs for them.

Looking forward to hearing how you go at the range. Sounds like you have a good grasp of the concepts of ground forces.

Brownie,
What type of rehab was provided to your wife after the operation?
Where does she suffer pain from? Lower back etc?
Is your wife in pain from standing for long periods?
Does your wife get pain when walking? Does your wife limp when she walks?
Feel free if you like to email these answers, if I have further information about her operation etc I can help you out further.
Depending on your answers will give me an idea of what would be the best solution to helping your wife and reducing her pain.
I work with hospitals helping people rehab to walk again etc after back operations, or accidents, strokes etc.

Hi Zen,

Spent some time at the range on Saturday. Was hitting pretty good shots early on when I was very conscious about limiting hip movement. Got sloppy towards the end and hooked most of my shots which was very frustrating. My follow through became very shallow so I fear that I’m swinging from too far in and losing spine angle/tush line but did not video this session so I cant say for sure. Was hitting my 8 iron around 130-135m and 5 iron to about 155 and maybe 160 on solid shots. Not much to cry about so hopefully I can get more efficient to get more accuracy and distance.

All in all, I think it works but I have to be so conscious about it. Would be good if it was just muscle memory. I’d still like to come in to get measured to see what I need to work on, when is the new software coming?

Two piece,
When you go to the range next take your mind away from your hips and focus on what your feet are doing, use your feet control your hips. If your try to use your feet to grip the ground. On the back swing feel like a ton of force is going up through your right leg and your right thigh doesn’t move. On the downswing try and develop feeling like there is a force going up through your left leg. If you do this the hips take care of them selves. If you develop force up through your left leg this will cause your hips to stabilise and produce acceleration and deceleration patterns, purely from using the ground.

The new soft ware should be available for me in mid October, I can do it now still in beta mode. Janaury 1 is the projected date for the global release available to all coaches and athletes. This has been a 25 year project in the making, the finally project will be great.

Here is some cool videos of the raw 3D, the new stuff people will get is a 3D animation of them performing a sporting activity and look at it from every angle.
3D Olympic Sports
3D Baseball Hitting and throwing
3D Triple Jump
3D Golf

If you are in Melbourne your welcome to come down to Core Health in South Frankston test etc and then we could go for a round at Long Island after wards.

Mate I’d like to organise to meet your wife and take a look hands on, I can then access how we can go about helping your wife and what avenues you need to take to help her. I can’t bare the fact to hear some one in living in pain on a daily basis,I want to help her.
I lived in pain every day for 7 years, now I’m pain free. In my situation, I was basically swept under the carpet never given proper rehab to resolve my issues.Doing ZenoLink and seeking other professional help I’m pain free. It took a few years of hard work although my whole body was crushed between two front end loaders, I had tons of other areas need treating as well.

Zen,

I’m in the CBD and south eastern burbs most of the time so Frankston is not too much of a hike for me. If you don’t mind playing with a hacker, I’ll definitely will take you up on the offer at Long Island.

About the feet, it’s a new paradigm for me so it’s gonna take a long time for the concept to sink in. Went to the range again today and got some good practice, was concentrating on my balance and weight shift forward in the downswing. It will take some time but I am determined to stop the flip. I will video swing face on this weekend if the missus lets me out early.

I hit 100 balls today at the range and my lower back muscle on the left feels a little sore from the repetition. Is this normal or just bad mechanics?

Hard to say regarding your lower back muscles being sore. This could be a good thing in the prospective your are now using the muscles between the lower body and upper body. It could also mean you it could be from incorrect movements. Is this occurring near your left hip?

Be a pleasure to have a game with you, drop us an email and lets tee up a game. Any one else want to come for a game they are more than welcome to join us.
