Winter at Barnbougle

A lot of Melbournians that I talk to about Barnbougle, mention that it must be cold and windy during winter. I also assumed that the only time to play there was during summer. However I was talking yesterday to a customer of mine who until last year lived in Devenport, and he suggested that winter would be the best time to play. Apparently it is milder there during winter and the wind pretty much dissapears.

I was reading the BD website and it also makes mention on the main page that winter is the best time to play. Don't know about you guys but this is good news as I was planning on giving it a miss during winter.. cool.gif

Go for it mate. Winter in Tassie can be bitter at night, but if you get a nice day on in the n/e coast, it is truly great.

You could say it adds to the atmostphere, and makes it like true Scottish links golf.

I will certainly be heading down there in the Winter, should also be able to get a cheap fare.

Having lived in Tassie for 23 of my 36 years I can tell you that Winter is not the problem down here, it is summer (or lack of). In "summer" you can have 30 degrees one day and then 12 the next. There is no consistency. Winter tends to be more stable. It can get cold make no mistake (especially at night) but there are many days where it is perfectly still and sunny during winter. Anybody who has ventured down here without the SPF 30+ over the past few months will confirm just how powerful the sun is in these parts as well !!

I lived in Sydney for 12 years and I can tell you that there are many 17 degree days up there that feel much colder than a 12 degree day in Tassie because of the wind chill factor and also the lack of strength in the sun. I live in Hobart as well which is a couple of degrees cooler during the day than the North of the state.

My suggestion is bring layered clothing, expect to where a jumper or fleece whilst playing and you sould be fine. Besides, it has to be more authentic playing a links course with a Beanie on than shorts and a t-shirt.

Brummer,

Do you work for the Tassie Travel Bureau ? laugh.gif

I can just see it now...Pro Shop well stocked with beanies laugh.gif

Seriously though, I never even contemplated going to Tassie in the winter - probably got this thing in my head that it would be a bit Antarctic like.

Same here DJ. Went down last winter though and that changed my mind, really is nice that time of the year and as Brummer said you still get sunburnt. blink.gif

No I don't work for Tassie tourism DG but I do run a company that sells leisure clothing including polar fleece and the like. Would love to see some of our stuff in the Barny Pro Shop so maybe convincing mainlanders to brave the winter is my best chance of convincing Barny management to stock our stuff wink.gif

The "Barny Beanie" does have a nice ring to it..

I too am Tasmanian (although now living in Coffs Harbour...long story) and have to laugh when you guys from Melbourne talk about Tassie winters. It's only 100 kms across the straight not 1000. I doubt there is all that much difference in winter average temps between Bridport and sunny Melbourne.

PS. I'm playing BDunes at the end of April so I bloody well hope I'm right now I'm used to Nthn NSW temps.

Hacker-br,

You live in a lovely place. Visited there last year and had a ball. I could quite easily live in Coffs Harbour.

Lovely trip down the Waterfall Way from Armidale to Coffs. Loved the Dorrigo National Park area.

How's that storm there a while ago, I couldn't believe what I saw on the telly.

I have had a chat to Greg before about it when they first opened. Mr Ramsey even suggested a Contra deal (shirts for green fees) which appealed to me greatly but not to the other partner in the business smile.gif Unfortunately he was down in Hobart the weekend I last played there so I didn't get a chance to spruik our wares.

I am told by my mate that I had an extensive conversation with Mrs Sattler at the Bar on the Friday night about the need for good quality / low cost merchandise in the pro shop. That was the night I fell asleep with my clothes on back in the villa so I may not have presented a fully professional and convincing case for stocking our gear !! It was that nasty blonde bar maid forcing me to consume spirits at the bar that did it.

Mr Ramsey if you're reading this give me a call. You know where I am. smile.gif

dg,

that storm was a corker!! I play at Bonville and the poor greens staff were cleaning up for ages after it .

If you are ever up this way again PM me and we'll have a hit.

Hacker - br,

Thanks for the invite. I would love to have a game at Bonville. Before I head up your way next time I'll PM you for sure.

Cheers

I'm in the process of deciding on joing a different club in Canberra.

I have wateched in interest at all the hype regarding Barnbougle and am thinking a visit to this course may be just the trick to clear my head before making the decision.

It's either this or a trip back to the Mornington courses.

What are your thoughts?

Not a hard choice...go spend a few days at Barnbougle. Just please don't bring up the 8th !!!!!!! smile.gif

Any ISGers going to be playing Barbougle around the 29th or 30th of June? Looks like I'll be able to swing a game around then.
