Worst Course Ever Played...

Hi there people, I just got back home from a round of golf with a buddy of mine, our expectations were'nt much of this course and thank god for that. Hobart airport golf course is probably the worst maintained course in Australia if not the world! They didnt have one fair way that was playable or that could even pass as a fairway the only things that this course had going for it is that it had ok greens and was near a driving range. So if any of you were thinking about playing there while in Hobart, avoid it at all costs!!! Worst golf course EVER!!! Just can't wait to get up to QLD to play on some decent courses... cool.gif

My vote would go to Lane Cove (Sydney)

A course in a capital city that costs $11 to play is not there to provide wonderful golfing conditions. Its there just to provide somewhere for any old person to just swing a bat and ball for a bit of a walk in the open air.

Your comments are noted, but maybe you should keep them to within courses that aspire to be more than that. Not the trashy little low budget courses that struggle, and don't ever pretend to be anything more than they are.

ttitheridge I hear what your saying but the local public course I normally go to (Rosny) is charging about the same and for novices like myself is a great course to play on, Hobart airport didnt even have a fairway! It could have been such a great course to if only they had a fairway to hit off...

Although I take tithers "If you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all" point, as we should be promoting golf not bashing it, I can't help but throw in my pick for worst that I've experienced. Sunshine in Melbournes West, when I played it in January this year (during drought conditions) was virtually dead expect for the greens which were patchy at best. I was bemused with how poor it was and even if it did have grass it would have still been very ordinary.

Yeah I'm not out to bash a course or the game BUT if you expect people to pay to play on your course (no matter how much or little you charge) there should be grass on the fairway NOT weeds!!! And if your going to have knee high grass on the course at least make a path through them...

blakroz13,
were there any other players on the course?
anybody collecting greenfees?

rsheehy - there were a few other players playing it but, I guess if you were dodgy enough you could get away with playing for free, but if I did that my luck would be that they were checking everyone on that day. Look if you want a course where you can practice your recovery skills than this is you course because that is all your doing.

Elsternwick Public Golf course
Moorabin Public Golf Course

Coober Pedy
Woomera

oh, and one on Kangaroo Island whose name escapes me.
It was on the map, but wasn't discernable on the ground.

Ablett29,

I appeal Elsternwick 9 holes.

It has 1 decenty par 3 - it's about 168meters carry the creek to a green that actually has a bunker. I think it is the 5th or 6th. 1 decent hole should exclude it from this forum.

The other 8 are a tad disappointing...

Ablett29,

Northbridge in Syndey.

For those who haven't had the pleasure - It was built in the depression to create work for people. It was designed by somebody boffin at the council who had never played golf and had zero idea about architecture and even less interest in the game. Most of the holes are 195 -230m par 3's (I wore out my 3 wood that day) with the odd 260m par 4 thrown in for good measure.

The funniest thing is that it's built in the leafy north shore on a piece of land that would be worth squillions of dollars and all the toffs and North shore matrons who play their think its Royal Melbourne or something. The 1 interesting hole is the 5th where you hit off the edge of a cliff straight towards the harbour to a green about 40 below you. You cant see the grren so you have to hit and then run to the front of the tee and peer over the edge to spot where you ball finished.

A fine example of Sydney Golf Architecture !!

Brummer - you win. Northbridge is a joke of a course. And to suit the demographic, the membership fees are hideously expensive - something like $2.5k to get on the first tee.

The signature hole has to be the 5th -180 metres, with a 30-40 (more?)metre drop in elevation. Crap left/right. On any given day there's a bank-up of atleast 4 groups. You can wait there 40 minutes before it's your turn to hit. The first hole skirts Sailors Bay oval (which is OOB) - very ordinary.

Mind you i have nearly eagled 'the' par 5. 2nd shot is almost vertical to the green. Par 60-nothing, it's a wonder why this wasn't redeveloped years ago. The members LOVE their course too, very secular part of the world.

2nd place - Lane Cove. Funded by council and the tennis club (it's a Country Club after all). Useful to go out and have a fun hit if nothing else is available... really.. something has to be available to avoid going here.

1- wattle park
2- burnley

butchy, YOU HAVE GOT TO BE JOKING. Wattle Park is a fantastic little suburban course, which doesn't pretend to be anything other than a fun place to bash the ball around.

Its great for beginners and social players. Both David Graham and myself started our road to golfing greatness there.

You can't put N'bridge ahead of Lane Cove. At least NB spends a little bit of money on its course...Lane Cove's not even a fun place to bash it. Don't disagree with the NB architecture comments though. Very silly. Worst is the 6th - a par 3 with a dog leg rolleyes.gif

Michael Campbell isn't a member of this board, but he saw the thread and wanted me to mention Gulf Harbour in Auckland for him...

Sorry, Cambo just received an email from an ageorgiou@pgatour.com.au

He says he was taken out of context. He meant Golf Harbour. In Thailand. dry.gif

Hux, Andrew Georgiou is the CEO of the Australasian PGA Tour. I can understand why he would be upset wink.gif

The airport course is dodgy but hey they dont have the "Royal" before their name,... so you cant expect too much wink.gif My fondest memory is hitting balls into the airport hanger... if you wanted real fairways though yuo should have wondered up to my old tracks and played Tasmania and Royal Hobart!!!!

This is for the Hobart people but am i right in thinking that Rosny was burnt in the bushfires and is only 9 holes now??? I have to admit that was one of the worst tracks I have played!

Henry,
Cambo's was the best back-pedal of the year in my book. I don't know which is going to be more interesting next year; Cambo on the first tee at Gulf Harbour in February, or Paul Casey on any first tee in the States.

Yeah Rosny is a short 9 hole course now, its only like a Par 66 for 18 holes. Still a good course for a bash and to hone one or two skills, have been playing there quite recently of late.

Bacchus Marsh West (sorry Muzza)
Sunshine

Gulf Harbour it is.

I've seen goats walk off it after three holes.

MM

Gulf Harbour was the one where Tony Johnstone was paired with RTJ in the pro-am one year. The organisers were not aware of the distain Johnstone has for RTJ courses.

After nine holes, RTJ turned to Johnstone and said "Well, that was just the entree, now we're ready for the main course". Johnstone said "Really? I've already got food poisoning".
