Hey guys I was reading through the kooyonga thread and noticed a few people had said Glenelg was a ‘strange’ course. I’m playing there in an open day in early feb and wanted to know any opinions on the course and any tips for playing there. I’m assuming bring lots of spare balls is one strategy – in the middle of some swing changes so my form is very inconsistent and volatile! Cheers

Member there for 30+ years. 3 woods, hybrids and irons from a lot of tees to position to avoid pot fairway bunkers and then avoid greenside bunkers. Simple as that. Strange would not be the word I would use, different is a more accurate description. Yes it has links feel and some resort/parkland feel but that is due to the different land across the property.
Play it as it lies, get on with it, its not life or death, its just a game! |

Strange is about right. Yes it is a tricky peice of land to work with, but a very different place to RA or Kooyonga. Pleasant enough but it wouldnt be my first choice in Adelaide

Northerner – you don’t seem to be enamoured by Glenelg, fair enough, strange is still a curious description Agree with your choices (RA and Kooyong are on better land with more property) BUT what most people miss is the fact aside from Pine Hill (ie the large dune the club house is sited on) a lot of the land was formerly marsh/swamp. The water hazards are a necessary to aid drainage in some areas and the new hazards were necessary for stormwater diversion to ensure acquifers were filled and therefore water security. A seperate argument is whether the revetted face bunkers and “links feel” blend coherently across the property. Probably not as well as they could but that goes back to the nature of the land. Can we agree that it is the best palindromic golf course in the world? Out of interest where do you play your golf, LK??, I will be happy to point out the strange elements there if they exist?

I didnt say I didnt like it, it just has a different feel to those courses around it. In two minds as to whether that is a good or a bad thing.

I was at Glenelg a little over a week ago watching the GolfSA junior amatuer and the course was looking ok to me. My son who plays in Adelaide( at another club ) is always saying about the good reports it gets from golfers who play there. Sounds very popular amongst the guys who play GolfSA events, vardons etc.

If you have an android or apple phone, download the Glenelg app, it has hole flyovers to give you a good idea of what each hole is like. There are a quite a few blind shots into the green unless you can carry your driver 230+. Shanks has summed it up well though, hit to position! Lots of trouble on most holes but also most have a wide landing area at a particular distance from the tee, practice your sand shots and enjoy the day! Edit, the website has the flyovers too, click on the hole on the course tour page
