I cant see it happening either, but they are moving dirt down there at the moment, so something is happening.

It would have to be mostly corporate membership, surely?

I would be at the National in a heartbeat if i had that sort of coin.

I still don’t understand how they can justify charging $80+ a round. This Saturday for example they currently have 26 out of a possible 288 tee times booked. Even if they were 30% full at $50 a round they would double their greenfee takings not to mention food & beverage and carts takings.

I played there yesterday and as of Saturday night the online booking sheet was almost entirely empty. Pull into the carpark at 8.30am yesterday its about 75% full and their are people everywhere.
The bloke in the proshop said they often get a lot of walk up starters. Maybe thats why the green fees are what they are?

Thomson Perrett to build a new private golf course at St Andrews Beach
Author: planetgolf

5 Dec

According to reliable industry sources, plans have been confirmed for the new private St Andrews Beach golf course on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. Named St Andrews Private Golf Club, the layout will be designed by veteran architect Ross Perrett and sit alongside the existing Tom Doak-designed St Andrews Beach golf course.

Interestingly, the development’s current business plan includes a limited membership cap of just 281, with each member required to invest more than $90,000 to become a ‘part-owner’ in the club. Subsequent fees are expected to be approximately $5,000 per year. As a point of reference, joining the nearby National Golf Club, which has 54 holes including 18 by Thomson Perrett, will currently cost less than $10,000. Given the history of the St Andrews Beach golf development this seems a high-risk venture.

For those unfamiliar with the area, Tom Doak originally designed 36 holes at St Andrews Beach for Golf Club Properties, who charged luckless investors $50,000 for a membership but ran into financial hardships shortly after the first course opened. The entire site was later purchased by an Asian investor, who turned the existing Doak golf course into a public facility and sold off the excess land to a local businessman. That businessman, Randal Shreeve, has decided to continue with the second golf course concept, but to use Perrett instead of Doak to attract a high-end private club clientele. Perrett designed the nearby Legends course at Moonah Links while his firm was also responsible for the Open Course at Moonah Links, the Ocean course at The National and dozens more across Australia.

According to the Australian Golf Course Superintendents Association, fairway areas have already been sprayed out and construction on the new course will begin sometime in January 2013. The association reported that the new layout will feature revetted bunkers, bentgrass putting surfaces and three ‘massive’ double green complexes. Designer Perrett says he is ‘confident that we will produce a world class links course on a superb parcel of land reminiscent of the great links of Scotland and Ireland.’ Peter Thomson added that, ‘the area already has seven outstanding courses and the new course at St Andrews Beach could be the best yet.’

While there is no doubt that the Cups region on the Mornington Peninsula is ideal for golf, there is some debate over the quality of the existing courses down there. None are regarded as truly world-class, which would seem a minimum benchmark for success on a project like this. Whether Ross Perrett can produce the sort of high-quality course needed to attract an investment of close to $100,000 from new members remains to be seen. What we can say with a degree of confidence is that he is unlikely to get a better opportunity to best anything his company has done in the past. At an absolute minimum, St Andrews Private Golf Club needs to be the best Thomson Perrett course on the market – by a considerable margin.

Another Planet Golf article with this one saying that it needs to be finished by 31st October 2013 (+ 6 months). This project just continues to amaze.

I can think of other words than amazing.

Play it as it lies, get on with it, its not life or death, its just a game!

4,900/year, ignoring the buy-in, that’s serious coin… the boys up at the grand on the gold coast pay more than that, but less quality private options up there?

I’ll be absolutely amazed if the course is up and running by the end of 2013… if at all!

How much better than St Andrew’s V1 could the new course realistically be?

Will it actually be better than V1? The current course is a pretty impressive layout.

Or is it more the exclusivity factor that they’re relying on to get 281 people to part with huge coin?

They are looking for “Sophisticated Investors or Certified High Net Worth individuals”

They might get some of the second category but not the first.

well if it’s better than the first – which is a cracker, we’re talking about top 10 in Aus, if not even higher? I’d love to be proven wrong and I haven’t seen it, but that’s a tall order..

how much would it cost to “buy” a ranking? If they bought enough judges and got a top 5 in Aus ranking, that might get a bit of buzz going?

Hire a designer who with his mates does the rankings for one of the magazines

I can think of one bloke :)

Hire a designer who with his mates does the rankings for one of the magazines

Doesn’t need mates…...do you really think all courses are visited for every Top 50 or Top 100 list???

On the basis it’s $100k to join and only 281 members designed by Thommo and on the mornington peninsula…..it’s in the top 5 already…..even if they lay down a half baked 9 hole putt putt course.

Given that none of the top 5 are on the mornington peninsula and thommo hasn’t designed a course in the top 10 ever (his best effort is 33 and 36 on the peninsula with moonah and national ocean – moonah legends was Perrett but he probably had a bit to do with it)... I’m not sure what you’re talking about…

I mean it will be pumped up to the hilt by the hype, cost of membership and so called “exclusivity” without the course design really coming into it.

So I guess we agree on the fact that he hasnt designed a stand out to date.

I’d take the national thanks…make you feel like you are stealing in comparison.
