Anybody played in Hawaii and can recommend courses which have public access. Single figure Husband and wife team are thinking about a trip.

I played Koolau, rated as the toughest course in the US. Check before you play though, when I was there it had been bought by a church and there were rumours that it may end up going downhill. FWIW I loved it, great course. There are plenty of options though.

Lies, all lies…

Four-time WBT Champion, or as blacksnake puts it ’blah blah blah’ :)

Half of the ’Trentham Dream Team’

-All premier courses are fully priced(ie >$250 even on “deal”).That includeds everthing u see on PGA tour.U can access clubhouse & have a beer in most tho
-Best golf deals are thru websites like Golfnow or golflink,or yr hotel .Rack rates prohibitive
-Koolau ranked hardest course in US,still in good cond, altho few people play it.Interesting experience.Paid around $70pp in 2011
-Luana Hills also a stunning course meandering thru rainforests & waterfalls etc-same $$ as above
-Turtle Bay a little disappointing-old layouts in average condition & heavy traffic-Palmer course better than Fazio
-Maui courses generally more expensive-Kahili & The Dunes equivalent to an average Group 1 course
-Big Island(Hawaii)courses outstanding,particualrly Hualali & Mauna Kea,but also around $300.Makeli(spelling?) on side of mountain quite challenging,around $80

I played on Kiahuna for $100 which included a cart and callaway hire clubs. Typical resort course but nice package. Played off the whites as the course was blowing (As usual). A great experience nonetheless.

Hi all, going to resurrect this tread rather than create a new one.

Going to Hawaii in mid-march and seeking advice on where to play in Oahu. Also going to Kauai but I think I have locked in Kauai Lagoons.

Looking for something pretty memorable. I don’t really mind forking out some coin for the privellige (100-150 a round) and not too fussed about loosing golf balls (except for TLTB if I get my hands on it).

Anyone been there recently who want to give me some advice please. Staying in Waikiki so also after advice on how best to get to the course. I will be taking my own bats so should I look for a “tour bus” or just grab a cab.

Finally, if anyone has been to Waikiki, any recommendations on the best golf stores to get gear from? I am thinking of treating myself to a new bag, new shoes and balls (both scrubbers to use there and good ones to bring back).

Cheers.

As a cricketer the Coverdrive was the hardest shot to master. As a golfer, I can achieve it with frustrating regularity.

was there playing golf about 3-4 years ago.

firstly car hire is cheap as chips in the states so consider that.

played tutle bay and really enjoyed it, up on the north shore not far from banzi pipeline so u can make a whole day of it. would need a car though.

also played ko olina, was very good too, resort style

Kapolei looks awesome

Also played Ko’olau, was like playing in the jungle, rated one of the hardest courses in hawaii

they recently played the sony on waialae which looked sweet as well

u will love it!!

Played about 8 rounds over there in July of last year.

We found the cheapest way to get to courses was to hire a car. We got an old Chev, was cheap as anything. Some courses do transfers including green fees. It’s probably more convenient but you’ll pay for it. They only seemed to offer early morning tee times and I don’t know about you, but I don’t get out of bed pre 7am on holidays.

Booking rounds on golfnow.com is easily the cheapest. On Oahu we played Ko’olau, Royal Hawaiian and Ewa Beach. We paid nothing more than about $60 including cart.

There is a golf shop…..Used to be called Nevada Bob’s across the road from the big shopping centre-Ala Moana. Its on par or better then any Drummond Golf store here and very well stocked. I go there every time I’m on Oahu.

Came back last week from 10 day golfing holiday in Oahu..nothing has changed from my comment from 2 years ago above, except Luana Hills is now called Royal Hawaiian,It is a sensational Pete dye course,& at $65 thru golfnow incl cart is a steal.
Also played Hawiian Prince(ok,but fairly dull tbh)& Olomana(both Obama & Wies home course) which wasnt too bad,but none of these come near Royal hawaiian or Koolau for challenge, wow factor, & sheer beauty.
These are the two affordable must do’s

Hi. Thanks for the updates. I have been pretty neglectful in resurecting a thread and then not passing on my thanks to those that replied.

Special thanks to Kaydee. So if I can only play one course on Oahu, which would you recommend? Your comment has me leaning toward royal Hawaiian or koolau. I want the “nice scenery” and wow factor. Don’t mind playing a difficult course either but don’t want to take up too much time looking in the jungle for my ball.

Well,Koolau is the number one ranked course for difficulty in the US.It is framed by spectacular volcanic mountains,& surrounded by greenery. What makes it difficult is the long carries over canyons on every second hole or so.And its easy to get on as the locals & Japanese just wont play it..too hard.
..but Royal Hawaiian is even better, with genuine wow factor on almost every hole as you drive thru jungle/waterfalls etc,& even more spectacular mountain views.I’ll go so far as to say its arguably the most intersting golf course Ive ever played(tho Pezula in Sth Africa & Bear Mtn in Vancouver wld give it a run)
It shld be said that both these courses are not in pristine condition because they cost so much to maintain, but as good as most semi private clubs in Aust
Cant go wrong with either tbh.A lot depends on availability thru golfnow (or elsewhere)as both these courses have a high rack rate which you wish to avoid.(many tourists just pay the asking price).....anything under $100 incl cart is a bargain(I paid around $65 incl cart a fortnite ago- for a Fri & a Sunday-best price thru golfnow seems to be about 3-7 days out)

Thanks again Kaydee. I have checked the golf now site and it looks like they have a specific slot on most days at royal Hawaiian (1:10pm) where the price drops from $110 to $60. I will keep my eye on that one. Cheers

+1 for Royal Hawaiian, played there and Koolau at end of March too, definitely like the RH better, with even better views of the mountains.
