The new greens are getting closer. Have a good consistent grass cover, just some more time needed for consolidation. Expect them to be in operation by late August.

Temporary greens are good, but I think everyone is getting sick of playing them!

BTW, here’s a photo of the frozen pond beside the 16th tee at 4.20pm!

For those interested, Trentham has been re-rated following the opening of the (last) four new greens, and the establishment of longer blue tees on the 2nd and the 14th.

Anyone who thought the AMCR 71 rating from 2009-10 was excessive now has solid evidence that the raters at the time got a little carried away. Trentham was one of the first (if not the first) country courses to achieve a rating under the USGA system, and the raters that day gave it the same rating off both the white and blue tees, even though the courses varied by 150m.

The new rating is 68 off the blue tees and 67 off the whites (about 180m shorter) ... far more realistic for the par of 70. The members are looking forward to their handicaps becoming more competitive comparative to other clubs … unfortunately the majority are stuck on an anchor, so it won’t be until 2013 that their handicaps can adjust.

The women’s rating of AWCR 71 (Par 71) remains the same as the previous rating … maybe the women did it better originally. :-)

Could always help out those who really need it with a manual adjustment to overcome the anchor.

Trentham is having a Charity Day on March 23rd. The event is a 4-person Ambrose, any combination of male and female players. We’d love to see golfers from other clubs on the day, tee-off is from 11.30am – 1.00pm, just turn up and enter. Entry is $20 per team.

The event is raising money for a 9-year-old girl, Jemma Patterson, who was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome when she was 18 months old.

The target is $2500 to purchase a ‘Gravity Chair’ for her. This is a comfortable chair that helps her sit properly and aids her therapy, and takes some of the pressure off having to lie down or sit in a wheelchair all the time. All proceeds, competition fees, trading table and raffles on the day will go to Jemma.

If you can’t make the day, maybe you can donate using the club’s online donation form. Details are also on the club website. Payment can be made using Paypal. The Paypal portal also processes Visa or Mastercard.

Rett Syndrome is a genetic disorder of the nervous system that affects all body movement. It causes loss of speech and hand use, and girls with Rett Syndrome need therapy to help them with movement and communication. Jemma needs full assistance with everyday life and doesn’t walk or talk. She is pushed in a wheelchair, and needs lifting equipment to help her in and out of her wheelchair.

Rett Syndrome occurs almost always in girls. It is caused by a defective gene on the X chromosome. Because females have two X chromosomes, the other X chromosome is normal enough for the child to survive, and females can live into their 40s and beyond. (Males born with this defective gene do not have a second X chromosome to make up for the problem. Therefore, the defect usually results in death before or soon after birth.)
