Reading through various posts on Metro, Southern (can't believe that is still going), Spring Valley etc. many people give lists of courses they would rather play, what is sandbelt etc. On nearly every occasion, Long Island does not get even mentioned - whether in a good or bad way. It is like the invisible golf course. I guess it gets dwarfed by 2 courses at Peninsula? Is that the only reason? I can't believe that with so much talk about courses being better than Spring Valley or Huntingdale, or worse than Metro, Yarra etc, it never gets mentioned. Peninsula is sandbelt but Long Island isn't even considered

In defence of that thread - there has not been too much talk of golf in the more recent pages.
Beware of cheap imitations - Especially from the US |

I've only played long island once, but I really enjoyed it. Can't really remember the quality of the fairways / greens, but I do remember a few nice holes. One of the par 5s in particular, drive to downslope with a copse of trees on the right, then a sort of S bend into the green - really nice hole

Location...location...location Fair point Boonie - LI doesn't get mentioned much I would have thought due to the sheer quality of it's neighbours. IMO - if it was in Sydney it would be considered within the regions Top10 courses. Alas - it's in Mel. and gets compared to more heralded layouts. I thought it was good with nothing outstanding - and bracket it with Huntingdale, SV and ahead of Kingswood. I'd gladly go back and have a game though - it's a very easy walk based on pretty flat terrain.

Boonie, Tithers did a nice writeup of Long Island a while back.
My auntie was an associate there while on the waiting list at
Metro, and after a couple of years at Metro she wants to go back,
much to my uncles dismay I think its a good course, the latter half of the front 9 is very enjoyable.
From memory there is a bit of Cashmore stuff there though

That thread should be focused on how you joined Southern on your own free will.
I think it is underated (Long Island) but just not in the same league as the Peninsula North and South, particularly when the North has been revived and the South about to complete its own transformation. I think it goes largely unoticed in discussion because it is unoffensive and overshadowed. There are some good holes at Long Island, but some very ordinary ones too. That said, I like the course. I found the 18th to be a bland hole, as were 1,2. I liked 5,8,9,11,14,15, while 6,3,17 were so so... (the third green is a bit small for my liking for its length, especially with some of the pins... 7 is pretty interesting with the elevated tee shot into the gully then the uphill second to the green ... Played there a few times, but one time hit a high hook onto a house roof off 2nd tee. Only to find it had cannoned back into the left rough, made a horrible noise.

hahah my wife comes from Franga - I take the pis$ all the time. You are probably right though. I agree it is in the ballpark of SV, but I think Huntingdale is a step up quality wise.

St Andrews. I have played Long Island a few times in the last 12 months, and the other courses you list as well. Spring Valley and Huntingdale are both ahead of LI in my book, with Kingswood some considerable distance behing it. There are some good greens at LI (1,3,6,7,8,14,15,17) but some average stuff as well (the 13th is a real mutt). Not in the class of Peninsula though.

I like it, condition has always been good and some nice stuff. Better than Keysborough, Southern, Sandhurst et al, a bit behind Spring Valley. Definitely worth a look and I think it is fairly easy to get a game as a visitor ($60??).

In my Tier 2 Sandbelt rankings I have Huntingdale + SV ahead of LI and Kingswood behind it. Agree Peninsula South is ahead of all of them and Peninsula North further again.

They had a huge membership drive last year offering 1/2 price
joining fee etc. The course looks immaculate, as always, holding up well in the dry weather.

Boonie I played Long Island just the once about 18 or so months ago. From my recollection it was very narrow, some of the holes feeling almost overgrown, is that correct or am confusing it with some where else? If that is the right course I thought it was OK though in need of some tree thinning. None of the holes stood out to me and whilst pleasant enough I wouldn't drive down to Frankston to play it.

The course is OK, nothing much better than the old Amstel course but still good, but it's a shocking place to hide dead bodies...
|
|
Its a lot better than the Amstel Park Course smails (and there is plenty of room for stashing ones victims along the eastern boundary where the first par 5 is)
|
|
I personally prefer the Amstel course over LI. Reason being is that the greens at LI are concrete (Or were 5 years ago), and near impossible to land on and hold.
|
|
Thats just a skill deficiency on your part there Cunninga. The greens at LI are very good (apart from the Cashmore stuff)
|
|
Most likely a skills deficiency Jack And yes the greens were good, but a touch hard for my liking. All comes down to personal preference I guess.

|
The last time I played the Parks course, we were leaving foot prints on the greens they were that soft.
|
|
Might be the case now since it has gone fully public, but I refer to both courses around 5 years ago. Haven't played either since.

Jon, YY is always in perfect condition. Played it many a time, and not piece of grass was out of place. Will be looking at playing LI in the near few months, as we have a recip deal with them which includes a free round or two at each other's club.

I am only new to this forum but IMO Long Island is a great course, played it on 24/2/08 and the fairways and greens were perfect. It doesn’t get the recognition it deserves because of its location and its clubhouse. The greens are the best I’ve putted on. It is on par with Woodlands, Spring Valley etc and IMO leaves Southern for dead!!!!

Shrek, how does long island compare to both at peninsula? I played peninsula november last year and loved both layouts.

Hi Brad, Peninsula North course IMO is an awesome track, just better than Long Island, however, once again, IMO Long Island is better than the south course at Peninsula. The cubhouse and facilities at Peninsula leave L.I. for dead. IMO if you were able to get a game at Long Island you wouldn’t be disappointed! :)

Then you haven’t played the South course at peninsula in the last 6 months Shreksm. Clayton has now finished his work and what a beast he has created. L.I. not in the same zip code.
