As i am a member there i was wondering if anyone else had played there and what they thought of the course. I guess as it is a bit of a private course not too many would get the oppurtunity to play there.

But none the less if anyone has i would be interested to hear what your thoughts on it are.

I have heard it is terrible (but I haven't played there).

Well i beg to differ. But what i will say is is that it is a hard course and people that may only play it once may think that. It is in A1 condition, but i guess everyone is entitled to an opinion.

I did a quick search - there was a thread last year on it...

http://www.iseekgolf.com/fo...

I played it for the first time myself last year and felt it was a pretty good course that probably had some better land available near the dunes but probably wasn't able to use it for possibly environmental reasons ?

I liked the B9 over the F9 - I'm not a huge fan of housing developments that encrouch as much as they do on this course !!

It was somewhat overbunkered for mine but that said the changes in terrain on the first 6 holes to the B9 were good. The short P4 2nd, P3 5th and P5 9th were the highlights for mine on the F9.

With the strong winds down there I thought that there was no need to have so much bunkering esp: on the P3's - none of which were a "short" one-shotter ?

Certainly - I'd recommend a game at the Sands but I prefer 13thB (Beach) which is not too far away [a good day out perhaps ?]

Played pennant there last year.

Nice track overall, great condition.

Practise facilities are great.

Bunkers are overdone, but that is to be expected when it is called the sands...Only other issue I had was the forced carry on 16?? over environmental area...long was to go into the wind! Also seeemed houses were going to get close once it was complete, I know one there had my golf ball in it's back yard.

P.s. Once again, great work on the av...disappointed the names have stopped in the sig though!!

down and out…did ya get that?

I agree that the course is over bunkered especially for some where that has so much wind.

Toolish, the 16 th is a tough one. I have made it once on a no wind day with my best effort, even then i only made the rough, not the fairway. I would say 80% of members cant hit that fariway. If its into the wind as it often is, forget it, just head to the drop zone.

As for the avators, most are unknown so i just cant really be bothered. But pease enjoy then anyway.

Heading down the coast this weekend and usually play ‘the old’ course at Torquay, but with all the work going on there I’ve booked myself into The Sands for the first time. Anyone played there recently? If so, how’s it looking/playing?

Report back with your findings D4S, I am looking to head down there in the coming weeks.

If I could have any professional golfer’s name and any professional golfer’s hair, I would have Robert Rock’s name and Robert Rock’s hair.

It is certainly a “residential” golf course. Have not played there for a few years.

Play it as it lies, get on with it, its not life or death, its just a game!

it’s been in good nick every time I’ve played up there….

the front 9, to be honest they’ve done the best they can, but the problem is, with the housing around it, there’s probably a number of holes which look pretty much exactly the same (distances are different, and the bunkering isn’t bad)... but you do get the feeling of “didn’t I just play this hole?”

If there was any comparison the front 9 is very much like sanctuary lakes…

Back 9, really quite varied… good undulation changes and much more interesting than the front 9…

I wouldn’t call the par 3s long, they’re pretty generous with big greens..

Yeah, I had a look at the course online yesterday and it reminded me of SL. I am looking forward to the old course being finished, always enjoyed playing there.

Golfgeek was pretty much spot on with his review. Front 9 is very similar to Sanctuary Lakes and back 9 is a little bit like 13th Beach (Beach course).

Was pretty windy this morning and I didn’t play the wind well at all. The rough is thick and tall so if you miss the fairway by a bit then your ball is dead. Lots of snake warning signs and the rough is bloody thick, so you pretty much don’t bother looking.

Course is in pretty good condition and greens were true but pretty slow. Highlight of the day was making eagle on the par 5 12th.

Glad I’ve finally played it but I think the old course will be better and more enjoyable once it’s finished. Overall the course was good but I think I’d rather play 13th Beach or Barwon Heads.

I played there last year, Pretty much everything you have said is spot on. Too may bunkers just for the sake of it, especially in such a windy spot. One of the players in my group stated he had read somewhere there were over 100 bunkers on the course which seemed pretty accurate. If I ever bump in to Appleby, we’d have words for sure ;-P
