If I was the geek I used to be in highschool, I would take a random sampling of my club comp results over the last year and see if that was true. I am inclined to believe that it just seems like high cappers win more than low cappers because in fact there are more of us.

Deege . Of course there are more long markers. I regularly still see scores of 42-45 points winning stableford comps. Those sort of numbers are extremely difficult for single figure markers to achieve

And your source for that sampling survey is ?
What other rules are we not playing by? |

Pom, I understand the grading. But I also understand that high scores of 42-45 are extremely difficult for an individual high marker to achieve also. I have been on a steady course of improving my handicap over the space of a year and have scored 40 once.

Deege my best stab score is 42, I have done it a couple of times. My best score was a nett 63 off 21 cap. Off a middle of the road handicap ( 17 at the moment ) I find it difficult to better that .

AAA I can only go on what I see week in week out at my home club. And from what I hear on the grapevine Exceptions are more noticeable than the the norm.

Agreed. But until someone does a meaningful survey over a large number of players we can only work with what we can see from week to week. I Doubt that an in depth survey would be worthwhile until such time as the complete handicapping system is in place.

... because we’ll still be waiting for the ‘complete’ package.

Its obviously easier to have 45 pts off a 20 hcp than a 4 hcp. Not EASY just EASIER. In theory 20 allows you 2 doubles and 16 bogeys. Jag a couple of birdies and already you are at least 4 in front. keep the doubles away and there’s 2 more so you only need 3 pars. Even without the birdies its achievable the 4 marker has to shoot 5 under par which is a red hot score even for a +1 marker. I started playing this game back in 1989 off a 31 hcp. I took my driver out of my bag and hit an iron off the tee and had 47pts. They cut me to 25 the next week and i had +8 in a par event so they cut me to 19. That was about the right mark for a year or so. I have played with a 23 hcp player who i knew well. He had a day out where everything went right for him and had 50 pts. It can happen, but he was an honest 20+ marker who couldnt reach most par 4s in 2. he just pitched and putted the spots off the ball that day. I think if you did a study of the scores you will find that probably 70% of the top 20 scores each week would be A graders, particularly if its stroke or the conditions are tough. However 90% of the scores over 42 will be longer markers, but there will probably only be an average of 1 of those per week.

That would be pretty accurate I would say.

You miss the point, though. Your results (70% of the top etc) are probably right, but that doesn’t translate to an individual high-capper having a higher chance to win a comp than an individual low-capper.

perhaps but if you have a stroke round then i disagree. also if you have a windy day, or wet conditions i disagree. you could also say that when the course has a lot of run that the older golfers will more likely win Or when its school holidays the juniors will probably win or that when the greens have ben cored and top dressed that the better putters are less likely to win I guess my point is that there are certain occassions and events that will better suit certain players. Thats life in general I think PS and yes POM I did get off to a bad start in the “burglar allegation” department, however when i later became the handicapper it was perfect because there was nobody who had lost more shots in a shorter period of time than I had, so none of them could whinge to me about being hard done by. I told them ” when you lose 12 in 8 days come and see me.”

difficult? um its near on impossible I had 40 on sunday (Off 8…76) my …it was only good for 6th place to win I need to par the course…..!

Hmmm I play on course with a lot of wind and slow fairways and the old feckers off 28 still win most of the time I have changed my focus though – just enjoy hitting the ball and hearing the birds tweet
